Reminder: The Apple Tree Landing Family Education Centre will hold an annual Spring Fair at the Canning Lions Hall Sat., March 22 from 10-2 p.m.

The Cornwallis District New Horizon Seniors’ Group meets each Wednesday from 1:30-4 p.m. at the Lions Hall. Seniors age 55 and up enjoy an afternoon beginning with a brief business meeting, followed by lunch and an afternoon of cards and board games. Contact Rose at 582-7346 for details.
Sunday Flea Markets at the Canning Lions Hall: The hall is open to sellers from 6-8 a.m. and buyers from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. with an average of 65 tables, and is open year-round. Tables are $5 each and a canteen is available.

A weekly blood collection clinic takes place at the Canning Pharmasave for your convenience Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8-10 a.m. at a cost of $6. A free monthly cholesterol and blood pressure clinic is also available. Seniors’ day is the last Thursday of the month.

Canadian Tire Jump Start: is a community-based charitable program to assist youth in financial need with registration fees to participate in organized sports and recreational activities. Next application deadline is Fri., April 11.

Hackmatack reading: students in Grades 4 and 5 who have read five fiction or non-fiction Hackmatack books by the end of March will be able to vote by ballot for their favourite book on voting day. Tallied results will be sent to Halifax. Participation will be rewarded with “special prizes” and announced in April.
Northeast Kings Educational Centre: the first Safe Grad meeting for parents of graduating students will be held Tues., March 25 at 7 p.m. in room 104; also on March 25, the Music Parents’ Association general meeting will be at 7 p.m. in the library. Everyone is encouraged to attend.
Under the leadership of Acadia students, Grades 7, 9, and 11 NKEC students have created a colourful professional art exhibit that was made public during a gathering at the Ross Creek Centre for the Arts March 4. The exhibit will remain until March 30 in the Community Gallery.
Canadian Mathematics League Contest: Grade 7 and 8 students participated in the annual contest in February. A score of 15 plus out of 40 is considered commendable.
Grade 7 students included: Navarre Hebb, score of 26; James Bagley 23; Courtney Thomas 20; Emma MacDougall 19; Stephanie Hutt 19; Brittany Oden 18; and Jacki Little 18.
Grade 8 students included: Louis Pearson 21; Taylor deVries 20; Maxwell Beveridge 19; Alex Caldwell 18; and Amanda Gouthro 18.
A job well done also goes out to students Sam Huyer Upton and Joseph Huyer Upton, who are both recipients of the Foundation for the Advancement of Aboriginal Youth FAAY bursary. This is the second bursary for Sam.
Justin Stoddard was the runner up for the Grades 7-9 level in the Nova Scotia Recycles Regional Contest. He finished second among all AVRSB schools, winning prizes and $250 for his classroom.
Elizabeth Fox was the regional winner for the Grade 12 level in the Nova Scotia Recycles Regional Contest. She received a $1,500 scholarship for her winning essay.

The senior music students’ fundraiser, “Music on the Road” will be held April 4 at 8 p.m. in the Al Whittle Theatre, Wolfville. Tickets are $10 adults, $8 students and children. A dessert sale and 50/50 draw will be held during intermission. Ticket money must be in by March 28.
Fundraiser: Senior, Junior and Beginner music students will be fundraising, “It Stats With Me” March 17-31.
Conserve Nova Scotia will be sponsoring students as they sell 13W and 23W CFL lightbulbs for $3 each; LED Nightlights for $4; and Water Conservation kits for $6, which includes adjustable low flow showerhead, a toilet bladder and two flow restrictors for taps. The music group receives 50 per cent of the funds raised.
