Brookfield captured the Valley Armoured Car Service Mainland AA Bantam League championship March 14-16 at Kentville Centennial Arena.
The Acadia Minor Hockey Association hosted the seven-team tournament, which featured teams from Western Valley, Truro, Antigonish, Pictou County and Strait-Richmond as well as Brookfield and the host Axemen.
The teams each played four games in a round robin format. Antigonish finished first with a 4-0-0 record: Strait-Richmond was second at 2-1-1; Brookfield third, also at 2-1-1; and Pictou County fourth at 2-2-0.
Truro also finished at 2-2-0, but missed qualifying for the ‘final four’. The Axemen finished at 1-1-2 and Western Valley was winless at 0-4.
The semi-finals were both one-goal games won by the lower-seeded teams. Pictou County handed Antigonish its first loss of the tournament, 2-1 in the first vs. fourth semi. Brookfield edged Strait-Richmond 3-2 in the second vs. third semi-final and went on to defeat Pictou County 3-2 in the final in another close and competitive contest.
The Axemen won their first game 6-1 over Western Valley, but lost 4-1 to Pictou County. Acadia’s final two games ended in ties: 4-4 with Brookfield and 1-1 with Strait-Richmond.
