Permit values jump by $500,000

The municipality’s permit value estimates for February were up more than $500,000 over the same month a year ago and the Shiretown is doing well with an increase in excess of $130,000.

Kings County Community Development Services statistics show that the municipality’s total building permit value estimates at $2,753,100, for a fiscal year-to-date tally of $62,431,494. These are compared to $2,183,040 and $66,920,107 for the same periods a year ago.

The combined value of the single-family unit permits last month reached $1,524,260. Duplexes accounted for $385,200 and commercial projects $368,000.

The department issued six permits last month for single-family dwelling construction for a fiscal year-to-date tally of 134, compared to two and 152 respectively for the same periods in 2007.

Last month, the department also issued permits for four duplexes with fiscal-year total of 31; two apartments for 66; and one mini-home placement for 15, for a monthly residential tally of 13 and 246 for the fiscal year-to-date.

In February 2007 the figures were two and 152 for single-unit construction; one and 43 duplexes; 10 and 49 apartments; none and 21 mini-home placements, for a total residential of 13 for the month and 265.

The department approved 17 subdivision plans last month for a total of 154 and approved 29 lots for 249. In February 2007 the figures were nine and 154, and 11 and 222.

Major institutional, commercial and industrial projects for which the department issued permits last month include a $290,000 commercial renovation in New Minas and a $200,000 health facility renovation in north Kentville.

February’s tally of $2.75 million was the highest for that month so far this decade, while the fiscal year-to-date total of $62.4 million is the third highest in the decade.

In Kentville, the Planning and Development department issued permits totaling $358,140 in value last month for a fiscal year-to-date tally of $14,245,640.

The department issued one permit for construction of a single-family dwelling, for a total of 18; no duplexes for 11; no apartments for 41, for a total residential of one and 70 respectively.

The major industrial, commercial, institutional project for which the department issued a permit was a $70,000 commercial renovation.
