The Yarmouth YMCA will be kicking off its 150th anniversary this year with a dinner and annual general meeting on Wednesday, March 26.
The event takes place at 7 p.m. at the Yarmouth Golf and Country Club with a full buffet catered by Chez Bruno.

The celebrations will include staff recognitions, historical information, and entertainment, with guest speaker George Rodger.

Tickets are $40 and available at the YMCA. The price includes a copy of a 24-page historical booklet prepared by Belle Hatfield, Gloria Goodwin and Lawrence Maberley.

Goodwin, a member of the YMCA board, researched the information for the publication from the storerooms upstairs at the Y.

“What I was really fascinated with was one photo from 1901 that showed the board of directors and it had all their names attached to it,” she said.

“It’s a really neat photo of these older men. There were old mortgages, all kinds of treasures.”

The YMCA plans on doing a number of things to celebrate the anniversary throughout the year, including a past president’s event, a Christmas tea, a Rock-Around-the Clock reunion, and Y’s men’s reunion.

“The club doesn’t exist anymore, but there are still all kinds of ex-members around,” said YMCA executive director Barrie MacGregor.
