Cattlemen get provincial aid
The province will provide funding for Nova Scotia's beef industry that will help the sector move toward greater economic self-sustainability.

The $1.9 million will go directly to producers through the Department of Agriculture's Programs and Business Risk Management Division. Details will be provided to producers this week.

"The department identified short-term financial pressures facing our cattle industry," said Brooke Taylor, Minister of Agriculture. "We recognize that Nova Scotia cattle producers need a plan for their future and department staff are currently working with the Nova Scotia Cattle Producers to develop a long-term vision and strategy."

The Nova Scotia Cattle Producers (NSCP) presented the Department of Agriculture with a number of priorities necessary for a revitalized beef industry in Nova Scotia. Taylor brought the industry concerns to government colleagues, who supported the request for funds.

"The Nova Scotia Cattle Producers is committed to working on the development of a solid strategic plan that we expect to have ready in June,” said Greg Sheffer, president of the NSCP.

The province will also provide support to assist the NSCP to implement the priorities that will be identified in the strategic plan. One priority is support for Atlantic Stockyards Limited in Truro, where beef and other livestock is sold.
