March 2 to March 8, 2008, continued Phyllis Irene Desmond – The death of Phyllis Desmond occurred on Thursday, March 6, 2008 at the Oromocto Public Hospital (William Duffie Unit). Phyllis was a loving wife to her husband Robert and daughter of the late Laurie and Mary (Stevens) States of Kentville, NS. She is also predeceased by her brothers-in-law Ken Johnson and Ron Hall. Along with her husband, Phyllis is survived by her three sons, Chris Desmond of Montreal, PQ, David Desmond of Halifax, NS and Timothy Desmond of Vancouver, BC; her brothers, Lawrence (Beulah) States and Douglas (Debbie) States; sisters, Bertha Johnson, Doris Gibson, Joyce Hall, Annie Clements, Helen States and Shirley Bromley; brother-in-law, Richard (Juanita) Desmond as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins. Visitation was held at Oromocto Select Community Funeral Home on Monday, March 10th, 2008 from 7-8 pm. The funeral service will be held at the Rusagonis Baptist Church on Tuesday, March 11th, 2008 at 2:00 pm. March 2 to March 8, 2008, continued EMENAU, Elizabeth Ford, 94, passed away at her home in Brooklyn, NS on March 6, 2008. Elizabeth was born in White Point, NS on July 5, 1913 to Mable and Angus Doggett. Elizabeth at age of 17 went to Boston and trained at Booth Hospital as a maternity nurse. She then worked at Private Nursing in Boston and area for five years. In 1936 she returned to Nova Scotia and married Harold Emenau and for 71 years was a loving wife and mother of her two children, Dr. Page (Colleen) Emenau, Saint John, NB and Gail (Fred) Goodwin of Hantz Border, NS. Elizabeth has seven grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. She was predeceased by sisters Pearl, Josephine, Ruth and brother Harvey. Elizabeth was a member of the Pilgrim United Church, Brooklyn, a member of the choir and UCW, also active in the community, member of Brooklyn Women’s Institute, Brooklyn Home and School Association. Elizabeth lived an active life. She played badminton and broomball, loved to walk, swim, water ski and canoeing and she square danced for years. She will be missed by her family and friends. Elizabeth’s body was donated to Dalhousie University for Medical Research. A memorial service will be held at a later date.
March 2 to March 8, 2008, continued BURTON, Margaret Freda "Dewey" - 76, Tidal View Manor, formerly of 11 Carleton St., Yarmouth, passed away March 6, 2008, in Yarmouth Regional Hospital. Born in Halifax, she was the daughter of the late Norman and Margaret (MacGrath) Snowdon. Dewey worked as an RN at Yarmouth Regional Hospital for 33 years. She loved visits from her family and getting together for meals. Her dry sense of humour brought many smiles. She is survived by daughters, Janice (Bruce) LeBlanc, Wedgeport; Norma (Lloyd) Marsden, Yarmouth; Peggy (Dale) Royal Lake George; sons, Scott (Meredith Greene), Yarmouth; Mark (Myrtle) Bridgewater and Ellen Burton; grandchildren, Jill, Megan, Laura, Erin, Colin, Alex, David, Sarah, Stephanie, and Glenna; great-granddaughter, Madison. She was predeceased by her husband, Paul, and granddaughter, Katelyn. Visitation will be held Saturday, 7-9 p.m. in Sweenys Funeral Home, Yarmouth, where funeral took place Sunday, March 9 at 2 p.m. in Sweenys Funeral Home Chapel, Rev. A.D. "Bill" Newell officiated. Spring Interment in Yarmouth Mountain Cemetery. Donations in memory may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society. March 2 to March 8, 2008, continued Nelson Sylvester Wagner – 81, of New Canaan Road, New Minas, formerly of Chipman Corner, Kings County, passed away Saturday, March 8, 2008 in the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville. Born in Toronto, he was a son of the late Marion LeGrand and Mabel Sybil (Palmer) Wagner. He devoted his life to farming and the agricultural industry in both British Columbia and Nova Scotia. He had been employed with Canard Poultry from 1973 to 1991 and later worked for Tenderfresh Farms and as a consultant for A.C.A. Co-operative. He was a member and former acting chair of the Nova Scotia Turkey Marketing Board. He enjoyed traveling, gardening and animals. He was passionate about many projects and hobbies, the latest of which were his lilies and gardens. He is survived by two daughters, Catherine Mills, Canning; Donna (Joseph) Larder, New Ross; two sons, Stephen Scott, Glenmont; David, Oliver, British Columbia; four grandchildren, Thomas, Shawn, Colin and Dean; a sister, Frances MacIntosh, Langley, British Columbia; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife, the former Norma Jean MacPherson; a brother, Bert; a sister, Rita; a grandson, Mathew. Cremation has taken place under the direction of the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville, where visitation will be held from 7-9 p.m. Thursday, March 13, 2008. March 2 to March 8, 2008, continued CROFT, Kenneth Avery - 71 of Brooklyn passed away peacefully in Queens General Hospital Wednesday, March 5, 2008. Born in Milton, he was the son of the late Eva May (Muree) and James Arthur Croft. Kenneth was a roofer in St. Catherine’s and a janitor at Port Mouton School until illness forced his retirement. He enjoyed collecting “junk” and scrap. Kenneth loved flea markets, wrestling and was an avid T.V. watcher, especially his 2 o’clock story and 5 o’clock news; he always had to be home to see it. Kenneth is survived by his wife Marian (Joudrey); daughter Melissa Lynn (Dwayne) MacNutt and step-daughter Kimberly (Christopher M.) Whynot, both of Liverpool; sons Kenneth James of Hamilton, Ont. and Charles Ernest (Joanne) of Dunsville, Ont; sisters Viola (Alfred) Oickle of Liverpool, Nellie (Angus) Roy of Ontario and Hazel of Yarmouth; brother Laurie (Rita) of Ontario, and grandchildren James Croft, Alexandra Croft and Samantha Croft all of Hamilton Ont., Kaitlin Macnutt, Tyson Macnutt and Kayla Whynot all of Liverpool. He was predeceased by sister Dorothy Lefevre and brothers Ervin, Ivan, Jimmy, Wilfred, Ernest, and half brother Ernie Moores. Funeral service was held Monday, March 10th, 2008 from Chandlers’ Funeral Chapel, Liverpool. Rev. Greg Denton officiated. Burial was in Milton Community Cemetery. Donations may be made to the family. March 2 to March 8, 2008, continued DAUPHINEE, Gertrude Pearl - 91 of Meadow Brook Manor, South Brookfield, formerly of Great Hill, passed away peacefully Thursday, March 6, 2008, in Queens General Hospital Liverpool. Born in Great Hill, she was the daughter of the late Arthur and Janet (Smith) Nickerson. Gertrude worked as a postal clerk for 22 years at the Liverpool Post Office. She enjoyed bowling, reading, sewing, caring for her family, her cabin at Ponhook Lake and crossword puzzles. She was also a member of Liverpool United Baptist Church. She was much loved by her family and was very happy to help them in any way she could. Gertrude is survived by her daughter Ruth (William) of Timberlea; son Russell Jr. (Joyce) of Blind Bay; grandchildren William Jr. of La Belle, Dale of Vancouver B.C., Tina Louise of Montreal, Jill (Perry) Armstrong, Peter and Paul, all of Timberlea; great grandchildren Terri Lyn of Prospect Bay, Brian (Diane) and William Craig Jr. both of Halifax, Melissa and Christian both of Montreal; great-great granddaughter Shyanne of Prospect Bay. She was predeceased by her husband of 73 years, Russell; sisters Caroline in infancy and Edith Payzant; brother Arthur and great-great granddaughter Kelsey. Funeral service was held Monday, March 10 from Chandlers’ Funeral Chapel, Liverpool. Rev. Dennis Nickerson officiated. Burial was in Liverpool United Baptist Church Cemetery.
