SCHURMAN, Mary Edna - 89, Mount Denson, Hants Co., passed away Sunday, March 2, 2008, in Dykeland Lodge, Windsor. She was born on May 9, 1918, in New Ross, Lunenburg Co. and was the daughter of the late Emerson and Winnifred (Meister) Redden. She was the wife of the late Amos Schurman and continued to live on the Century Farm and raised her family after his early death. In later years she enjoyed her employment at the Haliburton Museum. She joined the United Church of Canada in Mount Denson and in later years attended St. James United Church in Hantsport. She was a member of the church choir and greatly enjoyed singing and the social activities of the church. She was a member of the Windsor Legion and enjoyed activities there. She loved her large family, painting, dancing, bowling and her many friends. She is survived by her children, Earle (Myrtle), Mount Denson; his children, Mort, Beverly, Sam and Amanda; Betty Lou (Paul Loomer), Falmouth; their children, Ray, Glen, Nancy and Peter; Diane (Grant Jackson), Springhill; her children, Amos, Darlene and Carl; Douglas (Margie), Mount Denson; his children, Jennifer and Barry; Linda (Peter King) West Bay; their children, Katharine and Emily; Harry (Lila), Lockhartville; their children, Tamara and Andrew; son-in-law, Bill McLaren; also granddaughters, Jane Grantham and Mary Louise McLaren, all of Ontario; and 22 great-grandchildren. Mary is also survived by sisters, Virginia Bilgen, New Minas; Rose Doyle; South Alton; Birdie Moores, Halifax; and Helen (Jim Adie), Comox, B.C.; brothers, Harold (Clara), Waterville; Robert (Gloria), South Alton; Hughie (Carol), South Alton; and Emery, Kentville. She is predeceased by her husband, Amos; son, Jeffrey Lee; daughter, Fae McLaren; grandson, Frederick McLaren; brothers, Clyde Chesley and Basil; sisters, Rita Bowman, Hazel Lake and Gladys Hunt. The family wishes to express their sincere thanks and appreciation to the staff at Dykeland Lodge, Wallace Place for their care and kindness extended to their mother during her stay. Arrangements have been entrusted to Lohnes Funeral Service, 419 Albert St., Windsor (902-798-8317), where the family received visitors from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. on Wednesday, March 5. Funeral service was held 2 p.m. Thursday, March 6 in St. James United Church, 17 Prince St., Hantsport, with Rev. Glennis Smith officiating. Interment was held in Mount Denson Cemetery. A reception was held in St. James United Church Hall. Family flowers only, please. SAULNIER, James, 73, of Villa Acadienne, Meteghan, died March 2, 2008. Cremation has taken place. Funeral March 6 in St. Alphonse Church. Burial in the parish cemetery.

Freda Maude Long – 89, of Wolfville, passed away Sunday, March 2, 2008 in the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville. Born in White Rock, Kings County, she was a daughter of the late Partlo and Edna (Patterson) Pick. She had been a homemaker who looked after many of her family members, friends and children throughout the area. She is survived by a daughter, Judi (Paul) Rausch, Halls Harbour; a son, Brian (Debbie), South Alton; two sisters, Stella Brown, Lower Sackville; Phyllis Pick, New Minas; two brothers, Reg and Elmer (Joyce), both of White Rock; six grandchildren, Lindy, Tracy (Gerry), Megan, Susan, Angie and Paul; three great grandchildren, Tyler, Haley and Courtney; several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Warren Long; a sister, Bertha; four brothers, Arthur, Hughie, Stan and Delbert. Cremation has taken place under the direction of the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville and there was no visitation by family request. The funeral service, followed by a reception, was held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, March 5, 2008 in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville, Reverend Mark Shaw officiated. Gerald Neilson Palmer – 85, of Coldbrook, passed away Sunday, March 2, 2008 in the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville. Born in Somerset, Kings County, he was a son of the late Miles and Frances (Calkin) Palmer. He was a good father and a kind, honest and family orientated man. He retired from Canada Packers and in his spare time, enjoyed walking, travelling and puzzles. Gerald was also a proud member of the Billtown Baptist Church. He is survived by five daughters, Vicki (Garnet) Misner, Coldbrook; Judy (Wilson) Crann, Coldbrook; Karen (Jim) Galliott, Coldbrook; Shelly Palmer, New Minas; Jo-Ann (Tim) Jones, Waterville; a son, Gerry (Michelle), Kentville; two step-daughters, Sandra and Diane; a sister, Miriam “Mickie” Ward (Steward Purdy), Coldbrook; two brothers, Keith (Velma), Billtown; Avard (Christina “Kip”), Canning; a special friend, Marjorie Hannam, New Minas; 17 grandchildren, David, Craig, Jason, Derek, Shannon, Darryl, Michelle, Karyn, Stefanie, Bryce “B.J.”, Josh, Nick, Aiden, Amber, Brendan, Christopher and Tanisha; 10 great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his first wife, the former Priscilla “Pat” Kynock; a granddaughter, Tammie Galliott; his second wife, the former, Hazel Smith. Visitation was held from 3:30-5 and 7-9 p.m. Wednesday, March 5, 2008 in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville, where the funeral service, followed by a reception, was held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, March 6, 2008, Reverend Murray Shaw officiated. WOOD, Ruth Iris - 92, Tidal View Manor, Yarmouth, formerly of Tusket, passed away peacefully March 4, 2008, in Tidal View Manor. She was born in Pleasant Valley, Yarmouth Co., on September 13, 1915, to the late William and Bertha (Higby) Gray. She was a homemaker and trained personal care worker at Tidal View Manor, where she worked until she retired. She was predeceased by her husband, Roy Wood; sisters, Gladys and Florence in infancy, Helen Tinkham and Betty Higby; brothers, Roy and Earl Gray. She is survived by her nephew, Ronald (Carol) Gray, Lake George, Yarmouth Co., nieces, Florence (Hollie) Thorton, Holland Centre, Ont.; Helen (Earl) Poole, Yarmouth. Funeral service was held Saturday, March 8, at 10 a.m. in Sweeny's Funeral Home Chapel, Yarmouth, Mr. David Sollows officiated. Burial took place in Tusket Cemetery. Edwin “Allison” Parks - 83, On Tuesday, March 4, 2008 Millie’s beloved husband, Allison passed away- his earthly cares are no more- heaven awaits him. Allison was born on September 10, 1924 in Kentville, the son of Frederick and Minnie (Vickery) Parks. In his early years he worked in the dining cars on the Canadian National Railway and he also worked as a maitre-de in the dining room of the Cornwallis Inn in Kentville. He was always a “sharp” dresser and loved going places with Millie and socializing with their church friends. Later in life he moved to Nictaux, to a new home, where he enjoyed the friendship of good neighbours and family. He joined the Valley Men’s Gospel Choir and travelled from church to church singing and praising the Lord with his beautiful tenor voice. Allison had an artistic flair and exercised this every Christmas with a very unique tree. He is survived by his wife of 45 years, the former Mildred Lightfoot, Mountain Lea Lodge, Bridgetown; sister, Pauline and brother-in-law, Bev Buckler, Arizona and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by sister, Phyllis Morris and twin brothers, Burnette and Blanchard. The funeral service was held 2:00PM, Friday, March 7, 2008 in the Wilmot Baptist Church, Rev. David Phillips officiated. A reception followed the service in the Christian Fellowship Centre. Interment took place in Pine Grove Cemetery, Middleton. Donations in memory may be made to the Wilmot Baptist Church or Mountain Lea Lodge. Harold Cecil Dunham – of West Halls Harbour, Kings County, passed away Tuesday, March 4, 2008 in the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville. Born in West Halls Harbour, he was a son of the late Burpee and Elsie (Morrison) Dunham. He had been employed with the Department of Transportation, Hostess Food Products and D. B. Lacey Forestry. His greatest joy was his family. He is survived by five daughters, Colleen Dunham, Camrose, Alberta; Wendy Dunham, Dartmouth; Kelly (Bruce) Ward, Coldbrook; Tracey (Larry) Wagner, Kentville; Tanya (Scott) Carey, Avonport; two sons, Wade (Susan), Coldbrook; Ward (Patsy), White Rock; two sisters, June (Peter) Croft, Delhaven; Joyce (Wayne) Bezanson, New Minas; two brothers, Claude (Joyce), Centreville; Douglas, West Halls Harbour; nine grandchildren, Trissa, Jordan, Sydney, Shawn, Travis, Kris, Mitchell, Keely and Mariah; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by an infant son, Keith; two sisters, Helen and Margaret; two brothers, Donald and Frank. He will be sadly missed, not only as a father, but a friend. O’CONNELL, Justin Allen, 14, of Shelburne, passed away at home on Tuesday, March 4, 2008. Born in Yarmouth, he was a son of Lester and Susan (Smith) O’Connell. Justin attended Shelburne High School. He was very fond of country music and he especially liked Dwight Yokum. He loved monkeys. Justin travelled to Disney World and enjoyed Mickey Mouse. Besides his parents, he is survived by a half-sister, Jennifer, New Castle, N.B; maternal grandmother, Marilyn Smith; several aunts, uncles and cousins. He was predeceased by his maternal grandfather, Lowell Smith; paternal grandparents, Beulah Swimm and Victor O’Connell. There will be no visitation by request. A memorial service was held on Saturday, March 8 in H.M. Huskilson’s Funeral Chapel, Shelburne with Pastor Ed Otis officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the IWK Hospital for Children.
