Whether they were ensconced safely in their mother’s lap or sitting on the floor on a soft comforter, the babies and toddlers at the library’s Babies and Books event Feb. 27 enjoyed the stories read to them by Connie Millett. She shared a number of early childhood books and led some action songs. Afterwards, cookies and juice were served and every baby was given a new hardcover book.
Branch librarian Sue Mullen shared with the adults the large variety of materials that were available for young children. Not only does the library have books for babies and toddlers, but there are early childhood videos, DVDs and even potty training kits!
Babies and Books is the second in a series of events being held throughout the year to celebrate the library’s 50th anniversary.
Ever wondered what your house looks like from the air? Have a relative living in another province or a friend in another country whose home you’ve never seen?
Sign up for a computer tutorial and let C@P instructor Ian Manning show you how to use Google Earth. The library has received a C@P grant and will be offering one-on-one tutorials throughout the month of March.
Call the library to book a session in the evening or anytime during the day from March 10-14 (March Break). Ian can also help you with e-mail, YouTube, Facebook, Google SketchUp, or MicroSoft Office (PowerPoint, Excel, Word) and answer any other questions you might have about how to use a computer and surf the Net.
For the past few years, members of the Port Williams Health Auxiliary have been concentrating their energy on a big project; the purchase of a pain pump. At a cost of over $6,000, this is a major item and fundraising efforts have included the annual plant sale and coffee party, bake sales, and a recent bring-and-buy sale. Memorial donations have been directed to this project as well.
A pain pump is used by patients to self-administer pain medication, under medical supervision, often outside the hospital setting. It has proven to be an excellent way of controlling pain for patients with various injuries and diseases and is used frequently in palliative situations.
With approximately $1,500 left to raise, the auxiliary is offering an opportunity for members of the community to become involved by making donations if they wish. Contact president Doreen Fitzgerald at 542-2588 for more information.
The Health Auxiliary also would like to remind people that meetings are open to everyone, and the programs almost always include a speaker on a health-related issue. Meetings are held downstairs in Port Williams United Baptist Church on the second Tuesday of each month, at 9:30 a.m. or at 7 p.m., alternately, providing a choice as to whether one wishes to attend a morning meeting or an evening meeting, or both.
Guests and new members would be warmly welcomed. The next meeting will be March 11 at 9:30 a.m., when Sheila McGray, a Nurse Practitioner at EKM Health Centre, will be the guest speaker.
The next Soup and Chowder Luncheon at the Baptist Church will be held Wed., March 12 from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. The menu includes corn chowder and hamburg soup, rolls, tea, coffee and dessert. Freewill offering, sponsored by the Loyal Workers. Take-outs will be available by calling 542-3012.
The East and West Kings District Women's Institutes and Planters Equipment are holding a Farm Safety Day Camp for children. It will be at Planter's Equipment, Steam Mill March 29 from 9:30 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. It is open to children ages 8-12.
The cost is $5 and includes a morning snack and lunch. There will be sessions on large machinery, small machinery, first response and sun safety, and fun activities.
For more information and registration, contact Ruth at 542-7141 or Marie at 678-5926.
An invitation is extended to all Port Williams Seniors to come to the library’s March anniversary event Tues., March 25 at 2 p.m., a special presentation of library services including large print books, magazines, audiobooks (on cassette tape and CD), movie videos and DVDs.
Branch librarian Sue Mullen will demonstrate how to find and request materials on the online catalogue. A staff member from library HQ will be on hand to explain the regional library’s new Books by Mail program. Refreshments will be served.
You may be surprised at what you’ll find at the library! And all available to you as soon as you sign up for your free library card.
