The North Queens Rural High School Spartans brought home the Division 4 Provincial Banner after winning the Feb. 28 competition in Bible Hill.
North Queens Spartans bring home provincial title
Coach Gavin Martin and Assistant Coaches Ryan Merry and Catlin Merry coached the provincial championship team, North Queens Spartans for a second season with Tanya Merry as Team Manager.
The Spartans went undefeated in their league this season with nine wins and zero losses. The team also participated in invitational tournaments playing Division 1, 2 and 3 teams for a total of 19 exhibition games with 12 wins and seven losses. The Regionals were hosted at North Queens on Feb. 16 when the boys captured the Regional Banner for the school.
On Feb. 28 the number one seeded Spartans headed off to participate in the Division 4 Provincials at Nova Scotia Agricultural College, Bible Hill. The tournament was hosted by North Colchester.
North Queens defeated Sacred Heart School from the Halifax area in their first game Thursday night 94-41. The Spartans got off to a rough start but quickly settled into their game.
The team then met up with Pugwash Panthers Friday night, which was a very intense game. The game went back and forth and the lead was never more than a few points for either team. Both teams were very hungry and played hard. North Queens Spartans once again came out on top defeating Pugwash 66-61 and advanced to the championship game Saturday against the host team, North Colchester Mustangs.
In the Championship game the Spartans were ready to play, came out strong and played very well. In a spirited affair, a solid team effort proved why the Spartans were ranked #1 in the province entering the tournament as they went onto a 70-51 victory. The Spartans captured the Division 4 Provincial Banner. For the young coaches Gavin, 23, Ryan, 24, and Catlin, 18, this was an unforgettable experience.
This is the second Provincial Banner for Gavin and Ryan who were players on the Spartan Team when the last Provincial Banner was won by North Queens in 2001.
North Queens is very proud of the team. Everyone on the team participated in getting to and winning provincials. The team worked hard on and off the court practicing and fundraising. Thank you to everyone who supported the Spartans. The Grade 12 players Jason, Jared and Steven will be missed and are wished the best in their future endeavours. Jason Fancy and Jared Holdright were co-captains of the team. For the rest of the team see you next season.
