There are lots of rumours around New Minas relating to development on the Millett land east of the County Fair Mall, but they’re just that at this point; rumours.

Kings County planning manager Chrystal Fuller said there’s a lot of anticipation in the county planning department about what will happen once the development agreement for the Millett land is executed. She jokes that staff are taking bets on what exactly will happen in terms of new big-box development or businesses already established in the area moving their operations there.

Fuller said the only thing for sure at this point is there will be a Home Depot developed at the site and the developer hopes to move ahead as quickly as possible. There are rumours suggesting that the land sale will be finalized March 15 with construction beginning April 1 and an estimated completion in November 2008.

Fuller said she has heard the developer say they’d like to be finished construction by November, but there is nothing official at this time.

“The development agreement has not been executed by the developer yet,” Fuller said.

When county council approved the agreement last year, it was stated that the development agreement wouldn’t be executed until the land sale is finalized. Fuller said the development agreement states the developer has 10 years to complete the development of the site, which is expected to feature a number of big-box stores and other commercial enterprises.

Another rumour has it that the Atlantic Superstore plans to build a new store on the Millett land and their neighbour at their current location, Kent Building Supplies, plans to expand their operation on the current Superstore site. Fuller said she has heard something along those lines, but there has been no official documentation filed with the municipality to confirm it.
