The Canning District Recreational Commission held a public meeting recently for residents of Canning and the surrounding area.
A proposal was given to renew the annual area rate of $25 to fund a Recreation Director and for operating costs and programming. Approximately 50 residents attended with the majority voting to continue to pay the $25 to maintain recreation services.
The friends and family of Mabel Tupper and Daniel Huntley held a benefit Sun., Feb. 24 at the Canning Legion. Guests were treated to an afternoon of musical entertainment, along with a pie/dessert auction and a 50/50 draw.
The overwhelming response raised over $4,000 toward the care and recovery of Mabel and Daniel, who were involved in an automobile accident Nov.14 that left them with extensive injuries and lengthy rehabilitations. All donations were greatly appreciated.
The Cornwallis District New Horizon Seniors’ Group meets each Wednesday afternoon from 1:30-4 p.m. at the Lions Hall in Canning. Seniors age 55 and up begin the afternoon with a brief business meeting, a lunch, except the last Wednesday of the month, which is a pot luck lunch, and then an afternoon of games, cards, crib and crokinole.
An occasional day trip, like the bus trip to Peggy’s Cove and Mahone Bay that took place last summer, is also enjoyed. New members are welcome.
With an average of 25 weekly, the group has approximately 40 members with an annual fee of just $5. Contact Rose at 582-7346 for further information.
Sunday Flea Markets at the Canning Lions Hall: The hall is open to sellers from 6-8 a.m. and buyers from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. with an average of 65 tables, open year-round. Tables are $5 each and a canteen is available. Contact Don at 678-5525 for details.
Bookmobile returns to the Canning Lions Hall Tues., March 4 from 7-8 p.m.
The Village of Canning Apple Blossom Princess Committee is seeking candidates for Princess Canning 2008. If you’re a young woman interested in becoming the next princess and will be 19 years of age by Dec. 31, 2008 and not over the age of 23 in 2008, then contact the Village Office between 9-12 noon at 582-3768 no later than March 10 to obtain additional information.
Karaoke: will be held at the Canning Legion Sat., March 15 from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. Freewill offering, door prizes and 50/50 draw. Wheelchair accessible.

A Benefit Variety Show will be held for Bruce Kinsman and family Fri., March 8 at 7:30 p.m. at the Canning Lions Hall featuring High Country, James Brown 7 Company “Stillwater” and Carol Edwards.
The Canning and District Lions Club are sponsoring the event to help defray medical expenses. There will be a freewill offering, 50/50 draw, and Easter basket ticket sales. Open to those 19 and up. Contact 542-5149 or 542-0921 for further details.
Glooscap Elementary School: there will be an assembly Tues., March 4; second term reports go home Thurs., March 6; and March Break will be the week of March 10-14.
New Gym: with Canning Recreation offering a variety of youth and adult programs to the community and a new synthetic floor that may become damaged by snow and salt, help protect this surface by removing outside footwear before entering the gym and placing them on the mats provided in the lobby.
Northeast Kings Educational Centre: A Home and School meeting will be held at 7 p.m. in the library March 4; middle school Winter Carnival will be held March 6 and 7 and a middle school dance on the 6th.
The high school dance will be on the 19th from 7:30-10:30 p.m. March Break will be held the week of March 10-14.
Drama News: costumes from the ‘40s era, such as Fedoras, pinstriped suits and dresses are needed for the upcoming musical Guys and Dolls that will be presented to the public April 17, 18, and 19. This is a huge event with upwards of 100 participants, from students to teachers and staff to volunteers around the community. Any help in this area would be appreciated.

Body Boost is a low impact aerobics class for adults held in the Glooscap Multi-Purpose room Wednesdays from 7-8 p.m. beginning Feb. 25 to April 17.
Open Gym Night is a two-hour structured playtime in the Glooscap Gymnasium Friday nights for Grades 2-6 from 6-8 p.m.
Sports Play Group is a positive sport-oriented playtime for ages 3-4 Tuesdays from 5-6 p.m.
Winter Walk/Snowshoe is an evening walk in Canning depending on weather conditions held Thursdays at 7 p.m. at the Canning Lions Hall.
Mini-Volleyball is held Tuesdays beginning March 4 to April 8 for Grades P-5 from 6-7 p.m.
Ross Creek Centre for the Arts: March Break from the 10th to the 14th and the teen program for ages 13-18 will include: DJ Fusion, hip-hop dance, junk band, and young architect. For youngsters 5-12 years old, dragon power, environment and print, shadow puppets, animal safari, junk band and sculpture.
School Trip Programs at Ross Creek are now in full swing for elementary and senior high students. Programs are taught by professional artists and elders and will explore everything from visual arts, music and theatre to Aboriginal Arts and Culture. Bus service is available.
Black and White Returns - Two Planks and a Passion Theatre presents a fundraiser, “Silents Are Golden”, a social event of the season. With live music, film clips and quizzes, dancing, an art auction and a spectacular gourmet meal, it’s a fantastic way to celebrate spring!
