Port Market idea well worth pursuing
Letter to The Advertiser
To the Editor:

I could not agree more with the Feb. 26, 2008 article in the Kings County Advertiser, "Old Market for Port Williams". Having moved to Port Williams from another province just over two years ago, I see a wonderful small town that would only benefit with a few improvements. Ken Bezanson's idea to attract visitors and create a more visually appealing look to the community by rejuvenating an historic site is one such idea.

Our family has a great deal of out-of-town guests annually. One question we are often asked is, "What is this town all about?"

Having an historic site to demonstrate the significance of Port Williams to locals and visitors alike would answer this question with one easy visit. I would encourage the town not to let this opportunity pass by.

Finally, while we’re on the topic of improvements, Port Williams is in dire need of a park. Last year, on a weekly basis, I packed the kids in the car and drove to parks in New Minas, Canning and Wolfville.

It doesn't seem right for a community with this many children not to have their own park. There are hundreds of children in Port Williams and this is not likely to change. There should be a central gathering place - perhaps off the main road - for families to bring their children to play, take in nature and just get away for a couple of hours.

Take a walk around Ports Landing and Planter's Square and what you notice are the number of homes with their own playsets. While it's great to be able to swing in your backyard, as residents, we should really see it as a priority to invest in a well-equipped park; a safe and welcoming place for residents and visitors alike.

I would be very pleased to work with the powers-that-be to make this happen.

Regards

Lia Hennigar
