Joan Marie Warner (Phillips) - 75, Windsor. With our deepest regrets, we announce that Joan Marie Warner (Phillips) passed away peacefully surrounded by love, after a long battle with leukemia on Monday, February 18, 2008, in the Hants Community Hospital. Joan was a daughter of the late Frank and Stella (Fletcher) Phillips. Joan was born in Wentworth, Hants Co., and lived most of her life in Windsor. At the age of 16, she worked as a switchboard operator for MT&T for several years, and after many years as a homemaker, she operated Warner's Boutique (suntanning salon). She was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion No. 9 and in her early years, she enjoyed membership in the Windsor Curling Club and Windsor Bowling League. Joan loved reading, knitting, completing crossword puzzles, baking carrot cakes, driving and bingo with her many friends. Joan's ultimate passion in life was her family, raising numerous children and always having an open door. Joan is survived by her husband, Frank Warner, Windsor; daughters, Yvonne Warner, Windsor; Darlene Warner – Oickle, Windsor and son, Brian Warner, Windsor; granddaughters, Tess Warner (Jeff Hood), Windsor; Aimeé Warner, Windsor; Kolby and MaKayla Oickle, Windsor; brother, Herbert Phillips, Windsor; sisters, Florence (Owen Cochrane) Bishopville; Dianna (Robert Skuffham) Windsor and many nieces and nephews, especially close, Bette and Bill Mills, Windsor and Graham and Shirley Phillips Purcell's Cove and many, many friends and other relatives. Joan was predeceased by her parents, Frank and Stella (Fletcher) Phillips; brothers, Harry (Had) Phillips, Ryle Phillips, Walter (Wad) and sister, Virginia (Phillips) Bulger, all of Windsor. Much gratitude to the nursing staff on Unit 500 and the Palliative Care Unit at the Hants Community Hospital. No visitation as per family request. Funeral service was held at 4 p.m. on Thursday, February 21, in the Windsor United Church on King Street, Rev. Bill Gibson officiated. Reception followed in the Church annex. Kenneth Earl Witty – 72, of Cambridge, Kings County passed away Sunday, February 17, 2008 at home, following a brief illness. Born in Artfield, Quebec he was a son of Maxwell Witty, Beaverton, Ontario and the late Margaret (Mortimore) Witty. He moved to Ontario at an early age and joined the Canadian Armed Forces, retiring in 1972. After briefly working at Scotian Gold, Coldbrook and in carpentry, he joined the staff of Weavexx, Kentville, where he worked for 17 years, retiring in 1994. He is survived by his wife, the former Louisa Stewart; a son, Hugh Earl (Tracey), Centreville; two daughters, Sheila Caroline (William Spidle), Coldbrook; Nancy Margaret (fiancé, Douglas Howell), Gander, Newfoundland; a sister, Doreen (Del Taylor), Beaverton; two grandchildren, Taylor and Ethan; a step-grandson, Cody; several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. There was no visitation by family request. The funeral service was held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, February 20, 2008 in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville, Reverend Ray A. Francis officiated. Ruth Amelia Hamilton - 88, Berwick, Kings Co. passed away Sunday February 17, 2008, in the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville, surrounded by her family. She was a daughter of the late George L. and Edith G. (Sawler) West. She was born in Ross Corner, Kings Co. and later moved to Grafton with her family. She attended school in Grafton and travelled to Berwick to complete her education there. Ruth and her husband Bob operated a dairy and apple farm in Grafton until moving to Berwick in 1969. Ruth was always an active member of her church & community. She had resided in her later years in the Fundy Villa & Grand View Manor, Berwick. Surviving are daughters, Elizabeth Hamilton, Lunenburg; Cathy (Robert) Foley. Centreville; grandsons, Bobby Foley, Nicholsville; & Craig Foley, Kentville; sister, Jessie West, Cambridge Station. Besides her parents she was predeceased by her husband, Robert Hamilton; daughter, Bernice Hamilton; son, Jim Hamilton; brothers, James, Bronson & Garnet West; sisters, Elizabeth Finnigan & Cora Roscoe. Visitation for Mrs. Hamilton was held 7-9 p.m. Tuesday February 19, in the H.C. Lindsay Funeral Home, 192 Commercial St., Berwick, N.S., B0P 1E0, (902-538-9900). GREGORY, Frances A. - 91, of Brooklyn, died on February 18, 2008 in Queens Manor, Liverpool where she had been a resident for the past nine years. Born in Windsor, NS. on December 5th, 1916, she was the daughter of the late Norman and Cynthia (Church) Sawler. Frances moved to Brooklyn in 1936 to open a Hair Salon. Frances is survived by numerous nieces and nephews and the family of her stepson Jim Gregory. She was predeceased by her husband, Gordon Gregory in 1996; sisters, Effie Sunderland, Dorothy Hergett, Violet Ellis and Nita Richardson Thompson. FLEMMING, Terry W. - 53, of Hillsview Acres, Middlefield, passed away February 19, 2008 at Queens General Hospital, Liverpool. Born in Liverpool, he was the son of the late Francis A. and Hilda K. (Roy) Flemming. Terry was a former Security Guard in Halifax and worked at C.W. MacLeod Fish Plant. Terry is survived by his wife, Christine; sisters: Rose (Maurice) Wells of East Port Medway, Elizabeth (William) Vaughn of Milton, Barbara Wilson of Bridgewater and Audrey McKay of Lockeport. He was predeceased by his brother Francis Jr. and sister Florence. Funeral Service was held Monday, February 25th, 2008 from Chandlers’ Funeral Chapel, Liverpool. Rev. Donald Lawton officiated. SMITH, Lillian D. - 88, of Milton, Queens County, formerly of Port Mouton, passed away peacefully in Queens General Hospital, Liverpool February 19, 2008. Born in South West Port Mouton, Queens County, she was the daughter of the late Herbert and Genevra (Roy) Fisher. Lillian was an avid sports enthusiast who loved to watch golf on TV, baseball and bowled in her early years. She was an avid bingo player. She is survived by daughters: Audrey (Joe) Fralic, Port Mouton, Doreen Wamboldt, Jennie (Jackie) Nowe, Sandra (Mike) Roy, Wendy (Phil Oakes), all of Milton, Maryann (John) Roy, Central Port Mouton, Connie (Barry) Roy, Middle LaHave; sons: Sterling (Judy), Red Earth Creek, AB, Frank (Janet), Wileville, Carleton, Port Mouton, Eddie (Kathy), Lower Sackville, David (Nancy) and Wayne (Janet), both of Brooklyn. Also surviving are 33 grandchildren and 41 great grandchildren; daughter-in-law: Cindy Smith. She was predeceased by her husband, Clifford; daughter, Marie; son Clifford; and sisters, Mary and Effie; brothers: Irving, Clarence, Edgar, Robie, Austin and Leander. MALONE, Dorothy A. - 81, of Liverpool, passed away peacefully at Queens General Hospital, Tuesday, February 19, 2008. Born in Liverpool she was the daughter of the late George Edward and Ellen Matilda (Lannon) Whalen. She was a former sales clerk for Metropolitan Store and Stedman’s Five and Dime and worked in the Telegraph Office. Dorothy is survived by her daughters, Judy (Glenn) Cross and Dorothy (Wayne) Oxner both of Liverpool; son Roy (Gail) Whalen of Liverpool; sisters, Betty (Leo) Pennell of Mount Pearl, NFLD, Jeanette Deganis of Wolfville and Barbie (Wayne) Peterson of Digby; brothers, Bill (Koreen) of Bridgewater and Jimmy of Liverpool; grandchildren, Murray, Joel, Steven, Andy, Dennis, Wade and Darren; great grandchildren, Kyle, Ryan, Christopher, Jolene, Rebecca and Tyler and brothers-in-law Walter Whalen and Roger Rafuse. She was predeceased by her husband, George Lovett Malone; son, George Jr.; her only granddaughter, Tina; sisters, Mary and Margaret; brothers, George “Bud”, John and infant brother William. CONNELL, David Allen - 60, Melvern Square, passed away February 19, 2008 at the QEII Hospital in Halifax. David’s passion for life was his extreme love of his family and being able to compete and excel in things no one thought he could do. His love of rebuilding cars in his garage gained him recognition province wide. His biggest hobby was NASCAR, special drivers Dale Earnhart, Junior and Senior. He was an extremely honest, kind and giving person with a great sense of humor. Whether it be at a drag race with his best friend, Allyn, at a poker game, at LMK Lanes or on a ball field umpiring or wearing a MT&T ball shirt he was always competitive. David was truly devoted to his family and was a great coach to any youth who wanted to learn. His greatest pride was his two daughters. David felt he had a blessed life and he made everyone stronger just to be around him. David was the eldest son of the late Dorothy (Naugler) and Sidney Connell. He is survived by his wife and best friend of 37 years, Kathy (Berry); daughters, Tricia (Adrian Merrick), Edmonton, AB; Jessica (Brian Bain), Kentville. Also survived by his wonderful sisters, Barbara (Blair Prout), Wilmot and Betty (Blayne Nowe), Kitchener, ON. Brothers, Frank of Meadowvale and baby brother, Doug (Lisa), Harriston, ON. Mother and father-in-law, Pauline and Claude Berry; brothers-in-law, Stephen and Andy and sister-in-law, Kim. Niece Cindy (Kevin Teal); nephews, Mark Findlay (Jamie); Derrick (Leanne); Troy; Dustin; Dillon; Daniel; Bradford (Tiffany) and their children, aunts and uncles. Special thank you to Dr. Donald Craswell for his many years of care, Dr. Scott MacDonald, Dr. Eric Balser, Dr. LeGarry and special nurse, Wendy. By David’s request, cremation has taken place and there will be no service. A celebration of his life will take place in August 2008. John Herbert Mercer – 76, of Wolfville, passed away Wednesday, February 20, 2008 at the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville. Born on February 6, 1932 in Fredericton, New Brunswick, he was a son of the late Herbert and Lois Mercer, of Campbellton, New Brunswick. He graduated from Campbellton High School and for a period of time worked as a radio announcer. He later graduated from Dalhousie University with a BA and a BEd and the University of Toronto with a BLS and a MLS. He then taught high school in Nova Scotia, worked at libraries in Halifax and for 29 years worked at the Vaughan Memorial Library, Acadia University, Wolfville, retiring in 1996. John was an active member of St. Andrew’s United Church, Wolfville, having taught Sunday school there for over 25 years. He is survived by his wife, the former Mary Alice Smith; two daughters, Nancy (Jim) Thomas, Spring Lake, Michigan; Sally, Vancouver; affectionately known as “Grumpy” to grandchildren, Kira, Zackary and Carson Thomas. He was predeceased by a twin brother, James. Cremation has taken place under the direction of the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville and there was no visitation by family request. A celebration of John’s life, followed by a reception, was held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, February 23, 2008 at St. Andrew’s United Church, Reverend Robyn Brown-Hewitt officiating. Burial will take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory may be made to the Mission and Service Fund of St. Andrew’s United Church.
