No pleas yet in damaged mailboxes case

There have still been no pleas entered in a case in which two adults and three youths are accused of damaging and blowing up mailboxes in Wedgeport and Little River Harbour.

One of the accused, Matthew Jeff Doucette, 18, was slated to enter pleas in provincial court on Tuesday, Feb. 26. His plea date has been set off to March 25. He is facing six counts of mischief and six counts of possession of an explosive substance.

A second adult charged, Kevin Figueira Maio, 18, is scheduled to be in court for plea on March 4. He is charged with five counts of mischief and seven counts of possession of an explosive substance.

The three young people charged are scheduled to enter pleas on May 12.

In early November the Yarmouth Rural RCMP received complaints of mailboxes having been blown up in Upper Wedgeport and Little River Harbour. During its investigation the RCMP said five pop bottles and one pipe were used.

There were no reported injuries, but the situation did cause anxiety for residents.

The charges before the court include counts of mischief by willfully damaging mailboxes and possession of an explosive substance. Court documents identify the explosive substance as chlorine bombs.
