Take the Roof Off Winter!

Join the Recreation Department and the Queens Family Resource Centre for a Family Mini Amazing Race 12:30 p.m. - 1:30 p.m. March 8 at the South Queens Junior High School soccer field on Old Bridge St., Liverpool. Be prepared to be challenged physically and mentally in this fun event filled with Winter activities. Prize will be awarded, and hot chocolate will be served! Take the Roof off Winter

Following the Family Mini Amazing Race, there will be free skating at the Queens Memorial Arena from 1:30 - 3 p.m. for families with children up to age 14. An adult must accompany children under age 10. This free skate is sponsored by the Region of Queens Recreation Dept., in cooperation with the Queens Family Resource Centre.

March Break Fun

Get ready for fun times, great events and activities in the Region of Queens. March Break runs from March 10-14, and the Recreation Department, as well as other community organizations, have lots of exciting events planned to make this a memorable March Break. Calling All Fitness Instructors

The Region of Queens Municipality's Recreation Department is currently compiling a directory of fitness instructors in our community. Information including contact information, credentials and types of classes that instructors can offer, as well as if the classes are currently being offered; this will be compiled into a directory to field questions from the community. Free Noon Hour Skating for Adults, Liverpool

Strap on your skates and have an hour of fun skating at Queens Memorial Arena on Old Bridge Street in Liverpool! Noon Hour Skating for Adults is back, sponsored by the Region of Queens Municipality. Adults aged 17 and up can skate from 12 noon - 1 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays until March 29. This is a popular fitness activity for adults in Queens, and a lot of fun, too! In the event of inclement weather, please contact the Recreation Dept. for cancellation notices.

Red Cross Assistant Water Safety Instructor Course (Age 15+)

This certification course is a pre-requisite to the Red Cross WSI course and covers: instructional skills including teaching methods, learning styles, progressions, communication, safety supervision and feedback. Certified AWSI can co-teach the Red Cross Swim programs under the supervision of a fully certified WSI. This is a 30-hour course, with an additional eight hours practice teaching. Water Safety Instructor (Age 16+)

This course develops instructional ability by focusing on how to apply the information learned in the Assistant Water Safety Instructor Course. Candidates will learn how to effectively plan and teach the Red Cross Swim Program (i.e. preschool, swim kids, and aquaadults). This is a 25-hour course, with 12 hours additional teaching experience. Upon successful completion, candidates are certified as WSI. National Lifeguard Service (Pool Option) & Standard First Aid & CPR (BLSC) (Age 16+)

The recognized standard of lifeguard performance in Canada. Participants will learn lifeguarding and emergency care techniques and principles for a pool environment. Participants must have Bronze Cross and be 16 years of age by exam date. Proof of Bronze Cross and age is required at registration. Participants must attend all classes. To obtain the above awards, a first aid written and practical and NLS written and practical exam must be passed. Standard first aid and CPR will be taught the first 16 hours of the course. Refunds will be issued prior to March 21. Instructor: Krista Elvidge. Dates: Fri. March 28 5-10 p.m.; Sat. March 29 9a.m. – 5 p.m.; Sun. March 30 9 a.m.-5 p.m.; Fri. April 4 9 a.m. – 5 p.m.; and Sat. Community Volunteer Income Tax Program

Registration for the Community Volunteer Income Tax Program will be taken at the Recreation Department by calling 354-5741. This service is free of charge and is available for low income/simple tax situations (Single person under $25,000 per year). Family under $30,000 per year). "Take the Roof Off Winter"

During the months of February and March, get out, get active and have some family fun, and you could win a prize! Call the Recreation Dept. at 354-5741 and tell us what your family did to "Take the Roof off Winter," and you will be entered to win weekly draws for prizes, as well as entered to win the grand prize of a family weekend getaway at White Point Beach Resort, donated by South Shore Safe Communities. Call in each Monday in February, and Mondays in March until March 18 for your chance to win! Canada Summer Jobs Program 2008

The Canada Summer Jobs Program is an initiative of the Summer Work Experience program. It provides funding for not-for-profit organizations, public-sector employers, and small businesses with 50 or fewer employees to create work experiences for students between the ages of 15 and 30.
