Robert Duane “Bob” Taylor – 65, of Sheffield Mills, Kings County, passed away Thursday, February 14, 2008 in the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville, with his wife and loved ones by his side. Born in Kentville, he was a son of the late Herbert “Bill” and Eileen (Goodwin) Taylor. He was a member of Kingsway Assembly Pentecostal Church, Kentville, where he especially enjoyed worshiping to music. It was through music that Bob came to know and love the Lord. In his younger years, he played the drums, and it was through music that he had a feeling of peace during the last few months. He attended Kings County Academy, where he played hockey. He later went on to coach minor hockey in both Kentville and Canning and during his time in Canning, served as president of Canning Minor Hockey. He enjoyed hunting and fishing with his four boys. Bob loved the social aspect of being a salesman and had been employed with Willett Fruit Company, A. G. Brown Company, was a part owner of the Purina Company, Steam Mill, and later went on to open his own hardware store in Canning. He also drove a school bus and worked part-time at the Kings County Correctional Centre as a guard. He was later employed with Evangeline Motors and was exceptional at selling cars. He finished his working career at Home Hardware, Berwick, from where he retired in 1998. He was proud to be a member of the Masonic Order and was affiliated with the Horton Masonic Lodge, Kentville and the Scotia Masonic Lodge, Canning. Bob leaves a wonderful legacy to his children in his book of poems entitled “Bob’s Poems”, which will help with the understanding of Alzheimer disease. He is survived by his wife of 43 years, the former Donna Bishop; five children whom he loved dearly, Mark (Jill), Derek (Lori), Kevin (Treena), David (Mona) and Krista; a sister, Donna (Jack) MacKinnon, Kingston; nine grandchildren, Michael, Matthew, Isaiah, Janelle, Presley, Ariel, Peter, Nathan and Deanna. Visitation was held from 7-9 p.m. Monday, February 18, 2008 with a Masonic service held at 7:00 p.m. in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville. The celebration of Bob’s life, followed by a reception, will be held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, February 19, 2008 in Kingsway Assembly, Pastor Terry Penny and Pastor Robert Cross officiating. SHAND, Reginald Wayne, 63, of Orangeville, Ontario, formerly of Bear Point, N.S., passed away at his home on Sunday, February 10, 2008. Born in River Head, N.S., May 14, 1944, he was the son of the late Reginald and Doris (Nickerson) Shand. Wayne worked for Carbon Steel Co., Toronto, for 22 years. He is survived by wife, Donna; sons, Sandy, Ryan and Randy; daughters, Shelly and Tracy; grandchildren, Tara, Lindsey, Justin, Michiala and Brittany; great grandson, Adam, all of Orangeville, Ontario. He is also survived by his sister, Marie (Donald) Smith, Bear Point; niece, Dawn; nephews, Darrell, Mark, Patrick and Chad. He was predeceased by sister, Margo (Steve) Bolger, Brampton, Ontario. Wayne was a member of the New Hope Community Church of the Salvation Army, Orangeville, Ontario. Funeral services were held at Dods and McNair Funeral Home Chapel, Orangeville, on Friday, February 15, 2008. Memorial donations may be made to the Salvation Army or charity of choice. Gordon Livingstone Rowat, BA, B Ed, CD– August 29 1925 (Winnipeg) - February 12, 2008 (Ottawa) In hospital on Tuesday, February 12, 2008, in Ottawa. He is survived by his wife Barbara, daughter Patricia of Halifax, sons Philip of Whitehorse and Lee of Ottawa along with several grandchildren. During the Second World War Gordon served overseas in the Canadian Scottish Regiment. Following the war, he joined the Royal Canadian Navy (Air Branch) and served on HMCS Shearwater, Magnificant and Bonaventure. After leaving the navy, he worked for the Department of Veterans Affairs in Halifax. Following his retirement he volunteered for many years as Service Officer for the Royal Canadian Legion in Wolfville, Nova Scotia and later Manotick. In recent years, he spent many hours at the National Archives compiling data for the Canadian Scottish Regiment's Book of Memory. He is a graduate of the University of Saskatchewan and St. Mary's University, Halifax. Visitation was held at the Kars Chapel of Tubman Funeral Homes, 1610 Roger Stevens Dr., Kars, Ontario, on Saturday February 16th from 11:30 a.m. until time of service in the chapel at 1 p.m. Interment Beechwood Cemetery, Ottawa. Eric Allison Schofield - 81, Cambridge Station, Kings Co., passed away Tuesday, February 12, 2008, in Blandford, Lunenburg Co., in the company of friends. Born June 1, 1926, on Brooklyn Street, Kings County, he was predeceased by his parents, Gilbert and May (Borden) Schofield, and his brother, Donald Schofield (killed in the Second World War). Eric served in the Canadian Army during the Second World War, particularly in the areas of cryptography and codebreaking. He received his B.A. and M.A. (Economics) from Acadia University, and his M.P.A. (Public Administration) from Syracuse University. Eric went on to a long career with the Government of Canada, which included co-ordinating the visits of foreign dignitaries and heads of state for the Prime Minister's Office during Expo 67. He was awarded Canada's Centennial Medal for his years of distinguished public service. In his "first retirement," Eric was a tour manager for nearly 20 years, and traveled the globe with various bands of adventurers. In his later retirement, he deeply enjoyed the company of family and friends, and traveled often to spend time with them. Surviving are sister, Vera Schofield, St. John's, N.L.; brother, Dr. Wilfred Schofield, Vancouver, B.C.; nieces and nephews, Katherine Young (Rob Neilson), Janet Young Guerra (Walter Guerra), Stephen Young (Kim Pottle), Craig Young (Christine Healy), Linda Schofield (Alp Debreli), Muriel Schofield (Andy), Pamela Schofield (Kent Lewis); several grandnieces and grandnephews; good friend, June Herbert; "adopted sister", May Fry; a generous and wide spectrum of extended family and friends. FRECHETTE, Michel Philippe, MWO, 48, of Windsor, Hants County, passed away Wednesday, February 13, 2008, at Nottoway, Virginia. Born September 3, 1959, in Montreal, Quebec, he was the son of the late Fernand and Therese (Caron) Frechette. Michel served for 29 years in the Canadian Navy; 10 of those years were as a submariner. Upon retirement in 2006, he joined the reserves. In his spare time, Michel loved to garden with his grandson Tylis, and he also loved to cook. Mikey was an all around loving person, husband, father and friend to all. He always left his mark and will be missed by all. Michel was a member of the West Nova Scotia Regiment, and the Land Force Atlantic Area (LFAA) chief cook, and was in Virginia as part of the advance party for Exercise Southbound Trooper VIII, the largest annual exercise for soldiers of 36 Canadian Brigade Group. Mikey as he was known, was a dedicated family man and extremely professional in his duties, and was highly regarded by his military colleagues. He was the loving husband, soul mate and true love of Caroline Vigneault and proud father to daughter, Tanya Verge (Corey Lucas), Halifax; son, Kevin Verge; grandfather to Tylis Verge; brother to his sisters, Denise Frechette and spouse, Sharon Walker; Marie Frechette (Daniel); Francine Frechette; Sylvie Frechette and husband, Marcel Matte, all of Montreal , Quebec; his only brother, Pierre and wife Sylvie Frechette, Montreal, Quebec; uncle to numerous nieces and nephews. Michel was predeceased by his parents, Fernand and Therese (Caron) Frechette. Visitation was 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Friday, February 22, in Lindsay's Windsor Funeral Home, 194 King Street, Windsor. Retta Iolia Connors - 93 of South Waterville, Kings Co. passed away 3:00 p.m. Thursday, February 14, 2008 in the Grand View Manor, Berwick. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Born in West Black Rock, June 25th , 1914 she was a daughter of the late Alexander N. and Elizabeth M. (Dunham) Gould. She was a loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother and great, great grandmother, who loved the color red, music and dance. She was an auxiliary member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Ortona Branch # 69, Berwick for 20 years. HENLEY, Lillian A - 98, of Kempt, Queens County, passed away peacefully in Queens General Hospital, Liverpool, February 15, 2008. Born in Conway, Digby County, she was the daughter of the late Fletcher and Nora (Woodman) Adams. Lillian was a former nanny working in New Jersey before entering Teacher’s College. Upon graduating, she taught in Deep Brook, Albany New and Northfield. She along with her husband Gordon ran a convenience store where she also served as post mistress for Canada Post. Lillian enjoyed crafts and knitting and belonged to the Seniors Group and the Womens Institute of Nova Scotia. She is survived by her sisters, Joyce Smith of Whitby, ON, Frances Freeman of Dartmouth; brothers: Vaughan of Digby, Arnold of Landsdown, Guy of Smith’s Cove as well as several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband Gordon; sisters, Mary and Jean; brothers: Eric, Lloyd, Garnett and Neil. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Chandlers’ Funeral Home, Liverpool. DOUCETTE, Ronald Joseph – 65, Wyman Road, Yarmouth Co., passed away on Saturday, February 16, 2008 in Yarmouth Regional Hospital. Born November 5, 1942 in Yarmouth, he was a son of the late Louis and Celeste Doucette. Ronald served with the United States Army, and also worked as a reduction plant worker with SeaLife (Pubnico). Surviving are a son, Scott (Karen) Doucette, Yarmouth; a grandson, Jeremy Doucette; brothers, Hubert, Port Maitland; Victor, Ivan, both of Yarmouth; sisters, Rosalie Dufour, Stoneham, Mass.; Marilyn Muise, Hamilton, Ont.; Yvonne Rodgerson, Eleanor Muise, Una Messenger, Dolores Robicheau, Andrea Jacquard, Sharon Deveau, all of Yarmouth. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, Elizabeth Ann “Betty” (Harrington) Doucette; a son, Chris Doucette; brothers, Charlie Doucette, James “Sonny” Doucette and William “Billy” Doucette. Visitation took place from 7-9 Tuesday evening, with prayers at 8 PM, both in H. M. Huskilson’s Funeral Home, 29 Albert Street, Yarmouth. The funeral mass was held at 2:00 PM, Wednesday, February 20 from Saint Ambrose Cathedral, 43 Albert Street, Yarmouth, Father John MacPherson officiated.
