Cheryl Lynn Hiltz, 60, of Bishopville, Hants County. It is with deep sadness that the family has to announce the passing of Cheryl Hiltz, on Friday, February 8, 2008, at the Hants Community Hospital, Windsor, after a courageous battle with cancer. Born on August 4, 1947, in Windsor, she is the daughter of Jean (nee: Fairn) Harvie, and the late Dexter Harvie. Cheryl worked at Canadian Keyes Fibre for 41 years, retiring in February 2006. She was a member of CKF Local 576 Paperworkers, Hantsport. Cheryl’s life was her family, and she was very proud of her children and her adored grandchildren were the center of her life. In her leisure time, Cheryl enjoyed quilting, bingo, family gatherings, bluegrass festivals and singing. She is survived by and will be sadly missed by her mother Jean Harvie, Dykeland Lodge, Windsor; her loving husband of 44 years, Dale; daughter, Lori Whynot (Gary Murphy), Dartmouth; son, Stephen (Jody Cochrane), Hortonville; a chosen daughter, Heather Curry, Hantsport; her beloved grandchildren, Brandon and Reghan Hiltz, Hantsport; Blake Whynot, Dartmouth; her brother and sisters, Lloma (Vernie) Myles, Hantsport; George (Karen) Harvie, Windsor; Joleen (Brian) Lunn, Three Mile Plains; Jana (Darrell) Church, Falmouth; Heather (Frank) Voegeli, Mount Denson; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by father, Dexter Harvie (2001). Cremation has taken place. Visitation was 7-9 p.m. Monday, February 11, in Lindsay’s Windsor Funeral Home, 194 King Street, Windsor. Funeral service was 2 p.m. Tuesday, February 12, 2008, in Lindsay Windsor Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Virginia DeAdder officiated, followed by a reception in the Hantsport United Baptist Church Hall. A private family burial will be held at a later date at the Riverbank Cemetery, Hantsport. Marie A. Surette - 74, Saugus, died February 3, 2008, at her home. She was the wife of Daniel L. Surette. Born and raised in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, Canada, Mrs. Surette was the daughter of Freida (Kenney) Kent of Nova Scotia and the late Oland Kent. A resident of Saugus for over 51 years, she was a familiar face to many, managing the New England Store in Cliftondale Square for over 25 years. A devoted mother and homemaker, her passion besides her family was quilting baby blankets. For many years, Mrs. Surette had made baby quilts and donated them to various children’s organizations, including St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital. Besides her husband and mother, Mrs. Surette is survived by four children, Sgt. Timothy Surette (LAPD) and his wife Sally, of California, Gunnery SGT. Theresa Bahe (USMC) of Louisiana, Tammy Bourgeois and her husband, Michael, of Lawrence and Todd Surette of Wakefield. She is also survived by three brothers and two sisters, all of Canada; six granddaughters, Emily, Jessi Anne, Sarah, Mallory, Melanie and Brianne; one grandson, Bradley; three great-granddaughters, Jasmine, Kelsey and Angelina; and many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. Her funeral was held Friday, February 8, at 9 a.m. from Bisbee-Porcella Funeral Home, 549 Lincoln Ave., Saugus, followed by a funeral Mass at 10 a.m. in St. Margaret’s Church, 431 Lincoln Ave., Saugus. Relatives and friends were invited to attend. Visiting hours were Thursday, February 7, 4-8 p.m.

Walter Allison Ruggles - 77, Victoria Harbour, Kings Co. passed away Monday February 4, 2008, in the Grand View Manor, Berwick. Born in Arlington, Kings Co. he was a son of the late Benjamin Douglas and Gladys Alberta (Rand) Ruggles. He was an avid blacksmith, woodsman, horseman and enjoyed the Mountain life. Surviving are a son, Walter (Helen Benjamin) Ruggles, Black Rock; daughters, Joyce (Bernie) Oickle, Halls Harbour; Lois (Arthur Benjamin) Ruggles, Auburn; Carol (Mark) Kennedy, Waterville; 10 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; brothers, Howard (Sharon) Ruggles, Perry Sound, Ont.; Carmen Ruggles, Barrie, Ont.; sister, Faye Parks, Berwick; brother-in-law, Donald Forth, Barrie, Ont.; sister-in-law, Hilda Ruggles, Perry Sound, Ont.; several nieces & nephews. SURETTE, Delbert Dennis - 88, Shelburne, formerly of Wedgeport, passed away in Roseway Hospital, Sandy Point, Shelburne Co., on February 8, 2008. Born in Wedgeport, he was a son of the late John Daniel and Arthenise (Muise) Surette. Delbert was a veteran of the Second World War, having served in England with the Medical Corps in No. 9 General Hospital. He was a cook at Roseway Hospital for 34 years and a proud member of Loyalist Branch No. 63, Royal Canadian Legion, Shelburne. He received his 60 year pin on November 11, 2007. He is survived by sons, Joe, Shelburne; Ken (Jane), Orillia, Ont.; daughter, Betty Branscombe, Sandy Point; grandchildren, Stephen (Simone), Michael (Janet), Ontario; Danny (Christine), Angela, Sandy Point; great-grandchildren, Adam, Aaron, Aiden, Amanda Surette, Nicholas and Emily Branscombe, and brother, Willie, Ontario. SURETTE, James Alexandre - 92, passed away Friday, February 8, 2008, in Villa Acadienne, Meteghan. Born in Wedgeport, he was a son of the late Daniel and Arthenise (Muise) Surette. James was a fisherman and a jack of all trades. He bought Irish moss for many years. He was a founding father of Wedgeport Credit Union. He was a Third Degree Knight of Columbus 6505 Wedgeport, and was a member of the Wedgeport Legion No. 155. James was always there to help people in his community. He was known for his great memory and loved to tell stories of the past. He had a wonderful sense of humour. He will be sadly missed by family and friends. He is survived by sons, Edward (Danielle), Wedgeport; Gary (Darlene), Saint Anne-du-Ruisseau; daughters, Annette LeBlanc, Wedgeport; Barbara (Daniel) Saulnier, Wedgeport; brother, Willie; 10 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren. DEVEAU, Lionel Thomas “Leo” - 73, Darlings lake, Yarmouth Co., passed away after a courageous battle with cancer on February 8, 2008 in Yarmouth Regional Hospital, surrounded by his loving wife of 44 years, June Deveau (McAuley) and children, Mitcheal (Marsha) Wellington, Denise (Terry) Hubbard, Wedgeport; Melissa (Derek) Crowell, South Ohio; his six very special grandchildren, Stephanie, Lynnelle, Daphne, Donavan, Hudson and Serenity-Carrington. Also, he will be missed by his loyal and faithful companion, his dog "Baby". He was a self-employed carpenter for the past 36 years. Previous to that he was employed by Oatis and Horn Elevators in Toronto as an elevator mechanic for many years. He was also a baker at Cornwallis Basin, and for two years he lived in Vietnam building roads as part of a construction crew. He is survived by his sisters, Lucille Khatab, Darlings Lake; Genieve Comeau, Meteghan; Isabelle Eisner, Middleton; Delores LeBlanc, Salmon River; Rosemma Jacquard and Frances Upton, both of Yarmouth. He was predeceased by his parents, Thomas and Adele Deveau, formerly of Salmon River; brothers, Emile, Roger, Edward, Wilfred and sister Anne, in infancy. Visitation was held 2-4, 7-9 Sunday in H. M. Huskilson's Funeral Home, 29 Albert Street, Yarmouth. Funeral took place in St. Vincent-de-Paul Catholic Church, Salmon River, Monday, February 11 at 11 AM, Father Albernie d'Entremont officiate. MASON, Verna Isabelle – 94, passed away peacefully at Tidal View Manor, Yarmouth, on Friday, February 8, 2008. Born in South Ohio, she was a daughter of the late Nathaniel and Nellie (Newell) Moses; she was predeceased by her first husband, Ormond Churchill, as well as by her second husband, George Mason; a son, Russell; sisters, Emma, Muriel, Alice; two grandchildren, Scott and Kelly. She is survived by daughters, Carol Churchill, Elsie (Ernest) Hersey, Virginia Abresch, all of Yarmouth; grandchildren, Kimberly, Michele, Shannon, Tammy, Cindy, Patrick, as well as 13 great grandchildren. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. She was a homemaker, she loved decorating for special events and holidays, was a gardener, a lover of nature and birds year-round, mother ducks and their babies who came to her back door each spring, and Chelsea the dog, who visited her daily. She lived in Hebron for many years, and wintered in Florida for a number of years, which she enjoyed very much. She was a fabulous cook, often sending little gifts of fudge to friends and family. She was an avid reader, with a keen interest in world events, as well as local and family news. When visiting her, she would always ask, “Is there any news?” Cremation has taken place, and a memorial service was held at 2:00 PM, Thursday, February 14 from H. M. Huskilson’s Memorial Chapel, 29 Albert Street, Yarmouth, Rev. A. D. (Bill) Newell officiated. Memorial donations may be made to the Salvation Army or to the SPCA. Candow, Ethel Ruth, 92 – Halifax, passed away peacefully Friday, February 8, 2008 at the QE II Health Sciences Centre, Halifax. Born in Elmsvale, she was a daughter of the late James William and Aimee (Williams) Downing. A long-standing member of St. John’s United Church. Ethel enjoyed playing bridge with friends, keeping up with current events, making her own bread and baking. She was proudly independent, living alone in her own home until her final illness. She was a loving and devoted wife, mother and grandmother. Survived by daughters, Betty Caithness (Tom), Halifax and Barbara Ruff (Eric), Yarmouth; grandson, Michael Caithness (Nancy), Ottawa; sister Doris McGrath, Halifax; many nieces and nephews. Predeceased by her husband, Donald Frederick Candow; infant daughter, Doris; brothers, Kenneth and Harold Downing; sisters, Lexie Butler and Gladys Cant. Visitation was held 2 – 4 and 7 – 9 PM Tuesday, February 12 at J.A. Snow Funeral Home, 2666 Windsor Street, Halifax. Elsie Christina DeAdder – 93, of North Alton, Kings County, passed away Saturday, February 9, 2008 in the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville. Born in Blue Mountain, Kings County, she was a daughter of the late Raymond and Adelaide (Jefferson) Jones. She was a loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother, friend and homemaker. She enjoyed music. She is survived by a daughter, Christina Coleman, Steam Mill, Kings County; a son, Garth, North Alton; two grandchildren, Brian (Evelyn) Coleman, North Alton and Sharon Coleman (Mike Eby), Scarborough, Ontario; two great grandchildren, Selena (Jordan) Ellis and Darren Coleman; several nieces and nephews. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. She was predeceased by her husband, William; an infant son, Lawrence; a son-in-law, Blake Coleman; four sisters, Alice, Frances, Mary and Florence; two half sisters, Millie and Olive; a brother, Thomas; a half brother, Walter. Visitation was held from 7-9 p.m. Tuesday, February 12, 2008 in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville, where the funeral service was held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, February 13, 2008, Reverend Leon Langille officiated.
