Digby beats KES in Regional consolation
One more chance next weekend to reach Provincials
The road to Provincials grew a little longer for Digby’s Lady Mariners this weekend. They lost the opening game of the division 3 Western Regionals against the Bridgewater Vikings 58-55 on Friday night. That put them out of the Regionals championship match and into qualifiers next weekend.
Digby won the consolation match against Kings Edgehill on Saturday morning, 52-42.
“We’d like to win every game at the end of the year like that,” said Digby coach Tyler Colwell.
“They came out with intensity today. I told them this morning they have to play all 40 minutes. Last night, we had a couple lapses.
“And the determination was there today. If we can block out the crowd, block out the refs, even block out someone on the opposing team and just play through all that, and focus on our goal, then we’re going to be successful.”
Digby’s biggest lapse Friday was the entire first quarter against Bridgewater. The Vikings held them to only four points in the first quarter and finished out the first half up 22-21.
Digby took the lead in the third quarter opening with an eight-point run, and ending with a couple quick lay ups from Jolessa Robinson to make it 43-41 for Digby.
It was tied 53-53 with two minutes to go. You won’t believe this but Digby’s Kate Chute, playing the number 55 jersey made the score 55-55 with 55 seconds to go.
It was 57-55 with 12 seconds to go and Digby’s ball. The home team turned it over and had to foul a Bridgewater player with five seconds to go. She made one of her free throws. Final score: 58-55 for the Vikings.
Jolessa Robinson led Digby with 23 points. Kate Chute had nine, Rebekah Cook had eight, and Lindi Daley had seven.
Nicole Brinson led Bridgewater with 31 points, including an astounding five three-pointers. Sasha Benoit added 16.
The Lady Mariners played a totally different game Saturday morning against KES – they blocked out, rebounded and put up the easy shots.
Digby this time held KES to only five points in the first quarter. It was 25-16 for Digby at the half, and 41-22 at the start of the last quarter.
Fouls were a big part of the story for KES. The team had three starters foul out while Digby ran a longer bench and stayed out of foul trouble.
“Our games with Kings are always close and always physical,” says Colwell. “This is a big rivalry for us. We play each other in the Valley here and every year we are the top two teams, so we always meet each other at Regionals.”
Digby will see KES again next weekend.
Colwell is not sure where Regionals will be held.
“You can’t figure it out. There will be a meeting Monday and they’ll decide where it is and what formula they are using.”
Jolessa Robinson led the Mariners with 15 points (38 on the weekend), Rebekah Cook had 13 (21 both games) and Kate Chute had eight.
New Germany advanced to the Regional finals against Bridgewater by beating KES 47-34. Bailey Himmelman led the Saints with 24 points and 21 boards. Lauren Moore chipped in 11 and hauled down four.
Taya MacGillivray scored 12 points for Kings, Samantha Langille had eight points and Nicole Morrison six.
New Germany claimed the Western Regional banner with a 54-50 win over Bridgewater. Himmelman led the Saints with 21 points (55 on the weekend), while Kaitlin Barry had 13.
Bridgewater’s Nicole Brinson made no threes but still managed 15 (48 total) while Sasha Benoit racked up 17 points (33 total).
