Lions Club District Governor Alex Hancox from Sackville was on hand when Club President Jerry Atwater and Lion Ernie Hovell, chairperson of the annual CNIB campaign for the Port Williams area, presented Dennis McCormack, coordinator, Community and Personal Giving/Client Services for CNIB in Nova Scotia, cheques totaling $3,200, the amount collected in the Port Williams and District Lions Club’s door-to-door canvass. The February event of the year-long celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Murdoch C. Smith Memorial Library will be a Babies and Books Jamboree!

It will take place at the library Wed. Feb. 27 from 10:30-11:30 a.m. Please register in advance (limit 15 babies) by calling 542-3005 or through the library website www.valleylibrary.ca).

The program is designed for babies up to two years, but older siblings are welcome to attend. Juice and cookies will be served and every baby will be given a new book.

February is Food for Fines month at the Annapolis Valley Regional Library! For every item of non-perishable food donated to the library, up to $5 in overdue fines* will be forgiven. Food donations will go to a Feed Nova Scotia member agency food bank serving that library’s community. *For fines only.

This program does not apply to lost book fees, damaged materials or other miscellaneous fees such as printing or photocopying.

The Port Williams Recreation Committee invites families to come skating at the rink on Saturday nights during February from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Music will add to the enjoyment and free hot chocolate will be served.

For more information or to volunteer, call Ted Fraser at 542-0229. All dates are weather permitting. No hockey sticks please.

There will be a Variety Show at the Community Centre Sat., Feb. 23 at 7 p.m. featuring Ken Best and the Silverado Band, Harold Hunt, Hy Country, with sound by Dave Arenburg. Admission is $5.

There will be a canteen and 50/50 draw. Come and enjoy an evening of good music! Proceeds for the Lions Club's community service projects.

AFRUBO 2 Coffee House will be held at the Baptist Church in Lockwood Hall Fri., March 7 from 7-9:30 p.m. There will be stories of Kenya told by James and Tracy Churchill; Cuba told by Carol and Ron Buckley; Niger told by Trudy Naugler; and of local outreach programs.

There will be music provided by a number of local artists, coffee, treats and prizes. Freewill offering to cover expenses. Come relax and enjoy.

Anglican Church: On the first five Sundays of Lent, Choral Evensong will be offered at 4 p.m. at the church followed by a reception at the Rectory.

On the Third Sunday of Lent the choir of the Hensley Chapel at King's-Edgehill School, Windsor, will sing Evensong under the direction of Owen Stephens. The Rev'd David Curry, who is the Chaplain of the School and Rector of Windsor, will preach.

Baptist Church: The potluck supper and annual business meeting will be held Thurs., Feb. 21, with the supper being held at 5:30 p.m. followed by the annual meeting at 6:30 p.m. The “Inn from the Cold” service runs each Wednesday until the end of March and needs volunteers. If you can help, contact Jean Leung at 542-5415.

EMS: The next meeting of the PTSA will be held March 4 at 7 p.m. in the library. Topics include School Facility Improvement and EMS Goals. Please come out and get up-to-date!

Charlene Davies, AVRSB Vice-Chair, will be in attendance at this meeting. If you have any questions, contact Karen Davidson at 679-1992.

Participation in the Boston Pizza “Operation Education” is an easy way raise money for EMS. The school will receive a five per cent rebate (before tax) on all Boston Pizza receipts that are submitted each month. Simply have your receipt validated by a store manager and put it in the Boston Pizza drop-box located at the school office.
