Sunday Flea Market: an impending storm did not deter some people from setting up their wares at the Canning Lions Hall Sun., Feb. 9. Numbers were definitely down, but smiles were abundant and buyers were still able to make some great finds.
The hall is open to sellers from 6-8 a.m. and buyers from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. and is open year-round. Tables are $5 each and a canteen is available with free coffee and tea to sellers. The building is wheelchair accessible and all proceeds go to the hall. Contact Don at 678-5525 for details.
Jam Session: the Wednesday night, Feb. 13 jam session at the Canning Legion was cancelled due to stormy weather.
Valentine Dinner: the dinner scheduled for Feb. 14 at the Canning Lions Hall was also cancelled due to inclement weather. Organizers appreciate everyone’s interest and apologize for any inconvenience.
A weekly blood collection clinic takes place at the Canning Pharmasave Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8-10 a.m. at a cost of $6. A free monthly cholesterol and blood pressure clinic is also available. Seniors’ day is the last Thursday of the month.
Glooscap Elementary School: there will be an early dismissal at 11:05 Thurs., Feb. 28.
Early Dismissals: it’s important to remember that regardless of dismissal time, it’s still considered a school day and children need to attend.
Home and School: the next regular meeting will be Mon., March 3 at 6:45 p.m. in the school library. Constable Greg Byrne, the school RCMP liaison officer, will speak about the DARE program offered to all Grade 5 students and about the National RCMP Reading Challenge. Child care is provided.
Science/Subject Fair: all students are encouraged to participate in the annual fair held from March 3-5th. Registration forms to have science projects judged may be obtained from classroom teachers or at the office.
Awarded projects will compete at the Regional Science Fair held from April 1-4, hosted at Avonview High School. Entries from any subject area - science, social studies, art, health, math, and language arts - are accepted.
Northeast Kings Educational Centre: Middle school reports go home Wed., Feb. 20 and a parent meeting will be held for Grades 10 and 11 into Grades 11 and 12 at 7 p.m. There will be an early dismissal Thurs., Feb. 21 and an Open House from 6:30 –8:30 p.m. for high school parents to meet the second semester teachers. No appointments necessary.
Middle School Breakfast Food Drive: NKEC students are looking for non-perishable food donations suitable for a child’s breakfast. Donations are greatly appreciated.

Congratulations, students: Burnell Lyons has been selected to attend the Forum for Young Canadians, a week-long institute in Ottawa that focuses on leadership and the political process.
And congratulations also to Elizabeth Fox, who is the Regional winner in the Research Essay category of the NS Recycles contest. She will be honoured for her achievement during a presentation ceremony in Kingston.
Public meeting for the Area Recreation Rate will be Tues., Feb. 19 at 7 p.m. or a storm date of Wed., Feb. 20.
Registration begins at 6:45 p.m. with voting by show of hands between 7:30 and 7:45 p.m. The rate is applied to eligible ratepayers and their spouses. There will be a brief presentation, and a question period.
The Canning District Recreational Commission proposes to renew the annual area rate of $25 to fund a Recreation Director and for operating costs and programming.
Fieldwood Heritage Society general meeting will be Wed., Feb. 20 at 7:30 p.m. at the Canning Fire Hall. In addition to Fieldwood Membership, representatives of the Canning Area Community Development Association, Canning Fire Department, Canning Legion, Canning Recreation Committee, Canning Village Commission, Lions Club, the Municipality of Kings County, and the public are invited to come and participate. Refreshments will be served.
Benefit: friends and family of Mabel Tupper and Daniel Huntley have organized a musical afternoon with ”The Good Intentions” and others, a pie/dessert auction and 50/50 draw for Feb. 24 at the Canning Legion from 1-5 p.m. to offset the expenses associated with an automobile accident that occurred Nov. 14 that left the two with extensive injuries and lengthy rehabilitations.
