Disaster plan implemented after Bridgewater hospital explosion
Staff member seriously injured
This is the statement South Shore Health’s CEO Kevin McNamara issued at a 10 am news conference this morning (Feb. 8).
At approximately 8 a.m. this morning two of our boilers were disabled due to an explosion, which seriously injured one of our staff. He is being transferred to Halifax by air ambulance and is listed in serious condition. Our thoughts and prayers are with him and his family.
We are currently assessing the damage and have implemented the disaster plan.
There is no central air, heating or hot water available, but (we) are looking at the possibility of bringing in portable boilers or electrical heaters to help maintain heat in the building. We are currently evaluating the need to transfer patients and appreciate the offers of help we’ve had from long-term care and District Health Authorities. Patients’ families will be notified directly if any patients are transferred. We are also in the process of discharging patients who are able to return home safely.
All outpatient elective services including Ambulatory Care, Lab, Diagnostic Imaging and Day Surgery and Operating Room at South Shore Regional Hospital have been canceled until further notice. We are also closed to visitors. Please do not visit the hospital unless you require emergency services.
We do not know what caused the explosion. The Department of Environment and Labour is investigating.
No access to the boiler room until the Department of Environment and Labour has completed their investigation.
We appreciate the quick response of our staff, physicians and volunteers as well as the local police and fire department and Emergency Health Services and Emergency Measures Organization.
We will be providing an update at a news conference scheduled for 1 p.m. at the Wandlyn Inn in Bridgewater.
