Kiwanis Liverpool recognized at landmark meeting
Kiwanis Club of Liverpool President Peggy Atkinson handed out two service recognition awards Jan. 29 that explained the success of the club on the date of its’ dignitary-filled 4,000th meeting.
Peter Davies and Leon Robertson were presented with Legion of Honour certificates during the afternoon celebration at Valentino’s Restaurant and Lounge in Milton. Davies has served the community for over 25 years while Leon Robertson has served for over 30 years.
Atkinson said when called, “They help out in any way they can. That’s the success of the Kiwanis Club.”
Kerry Morash, a former Queens MLA who presented a certificate of recognition on behalf of Premier Rodney MacDonald and the provincial government, pointed out the club is in its seventy-eighth year.
“That’s dedicated service to the community… and the province and the young people of this community.”
He then discussed the value of volunteerism by pointing out Nova Scotia has the highest per capita rate of volunteerism in the country. He said the value of volunteerism is about $2-billion in Nova Scotia. He said this is staggering because the provincial budget is $8-billion in comparison. Volunteers, he added, “Make this a better place to work and play.”
Locally, he said all Queens County’s service clubs bring a “great deal to the area, and the province.”
He particularly highlighted Kiwanis’ ongoing efforts to help children and youth of all ages through, as only two examples, well child clinics, and Early Childhood Education assistance. The list was long.
In attendance were the president and vice-president of the Liverpool Regional High School Key Club, which is widely considered to be one of the most successful Kiwanis youth clubs in the country.
Morash said these students are volunteering widely in the community and, through the experience, will continue their service into adulthood.
Queens MLA Vicki Conrad called the milestone “incredible.” She, as did Morash, said they worked out together the time – just with the 4,000 meetings – adds up to two years of two people working full-time.
“You’re always moving forward in this community and show such a great example.”
She brought a certificate of appreciation from her office, the NDP caucus and opposition leader, Darrell Dexter.
Region of Queens Deputy Mayor Doug Adams said he is “really struck with your message… to help children throughout the world. Our future is within our children.”
He presented a certificate from the Region of Queens Municipality.
Representatives from other service clubs and spouses and other invited guests also attended the meeting.
Kiwanis was founded in Detroit, Michigan, on Jan. 21, 1915. The Kiwanis Club of Liverpool was officially founded on Dec. 2, 1930.
