Liverpool curling team qualifies for provincials
A Liverpool team has qualified for the 2008 Senior Men’s Provincial Curling Championships in Liverpool Feb. 13-17.
Team Thorbourne with Skip Greg Thorbourne, Second John Armstrong, Third Brian Braid and Lead Dennis MacKinnon qualified at the Senior Men's South Zones, which were held in Digby Feb. 1-3.
The team started off by losing their first game to Brian Gibson (Dartmouth) 8-4. They bounced back, however, to beat Digby’s Keith Ring 8-6 in the second game and Clare’s Paul Boudreau 10-3 in the third game.
Team Thorbourne lost their fourth game 11-9 in an extra end to Brian Boutilier of Wolfville. They narrowly won their last game 11-10 over Brian Gibson of Dartmouth to qualify for the provincials.
Team Smart, consisting of Skip Albert Smart, Second Wayne Trimm, Third Bruce Briand, Lead Allan Foster and Fifth Greg Hicks, also played.
They lost their first game 7-4 against Brian Boutilier of Wolfville, their second 11-7 to Graham Harris of Mayflower and their third game 10-1 to Brian Gibson of Dartmouth.
Sixteen teams are competing in the triple knock out provincial tournament. Opening ceremonies along with practice ice and a players forum will take place Feb. 12.
