A fisherman in southwestern Nova Scotia has landed a big catch. A really, really big catch.
Jeremiah Nickerson, a 26-year-old fisherman who fishes out of Abbotts Harbour on board his father's boat the Kinda Late, discovered Thursday morning, Feb. 7, that the Lotto 6/49 ticket he had purchased matched all six numbers in the Feb. 6 draw. That made it worth $4,511,765.
It was one of two winning tickets in Canada that matched all six numbers for this draw. The other ticket was sold in Quebec.
Nickerson lives with his parents Owen and Cora in East Pubnico.
Claire Amirault, a clerk at the East Pubnico Convenience Store in Yarmouth County, N.S., validated the winning ticket for the Wednesday, Feb. 6 Lotto 6/49 draw.
“His mother had checked it on the Internet and he knew he had won, but he was so much in shock, he came here to validate it here for sure,” said Amirault.
“He called his girlfriend and I think he’s planning on going to Moncton real soon.”
Actually Nickerson left for Moncton the same day. After stopping first at the Motor Mart car delearship in Yarmouth to purchase a new fully loaded GMC Denali crew-cab half-tonne truck that had a sticker price of $60,000.
Amirault said Thursday morning the phone hadn’t stopped ringing at the store.
“Everybody knows around here.”
The store will receive one per cent of the winnings.
“I’m glad it’s somebody who needs the money,” added Amirault.
The 6/49 prize is far more than others redeemed at the store, which is owned by Joe Boudreau. A $10,000 scratch ticket proved lucky at the business and another woman won a car several years ago.
