Spring into Arts at Ross Creek: this month, the Ross Creek Centre for the Arts goes full bloom into creativity and inspiration with their Arts Academies in Theatre and Visual Arts Portfolio programs. Both programs focus on learning and development.

The Visual Arts Portfolio program spotlights students or adults dedicated to applying Fine Arts programs with a portfolio admission with direction in choosing the right school for you and applying for scholarships

“It is so important that youth have access to good guidance in order to compete for admittance and scholarships to post-secondary programs in the arts,” says Chris O’Neill, Executive Director for Ross Creek.

Glooscap Elementary School: a school assembly will be held Tues., Feb. 12 and a Home and School meeting Mon., Feb. 25 at 6:45 p.m. in the library with child care provided. All are welcome to attend.

Library fundraiser: as always, please continue to save grocery receipts from Sobey’s and Canning Valu-Foods and send them to school. Thanks goes out to all those who already have.

“Fighting Crime” reading challenge is still underway with nearly 3,000 books read in the previous few months. The goal is 10,000 by March.

Northeast Kings Educational Centre: There will be a Home and School Meeting Feb. 5 at 7 p.m. in the library, a Middle School dance Feb. 6 from 7-9:30 p.m., a High School dance Feb. 7 from 7:30-10:30 p.m. and High School report cards go home Feb. 13

Band: The senior and senior stage band and the senior choir will perform at the Al Whittle Theatre in Wolfville Fri., Feb. 15 at 8 p.m. Plan to attend and show your support.

The senior music trip to Montreal is in the final stages and a junior music trip is in the works.

Drama: rehearsals for the upcoming musical Guys and Dolls are also underway and off to a good start. They will continue until the production is presented to the public April 17, 18 and 19. This is a huge event with upwards of 100 participants from students, to teachers and staff to volunteers around the community.

Bookmobile returns to the Canning Lions Hall Tues., Feb. 5 at 7- 8 p.m.

Fieldwood AGM notification: the Fieldwood Heritage Society will hold its Annual General Meeting Wed., Feb. 20 at the Canning Fire Hall.

There will be a short business meeting at 7 p.m. followed at 7:30 by a round-table discussion of community affairs. In addition to Fieldwood Membership, representatives of the Canning Area Community Development Association, Canning Fire Department, Canning Legion, Canning Recreation Committee, Canning Village Commission, Lions Club, the Municipality of Kings County and the public are invited to come and participate.

The purpose of this meeting is to bring everyone up-to-date on what’s happening and going to happen in our community. The moderator will be John Newcomb and everyone is welcome to come and participate. Refreshments will be served.

The Canning Fieldwood Heritage Society has also launched its second annual Heritage Lottery with the slogan “Heritage Matters – Pass It On”, promoting heritage preservation and giving those who care an affordable way to contribute to the cause. Tickets are $20 each or six for $100 with only 500 sold.

First prize is $1,000, plus five additional prizes of $100 each, with proceeds to the preservation and restoration of the 1852-built Dickie-Baxter House on Main Street, Canning that was donated to the society by Frederick Smith, heir of the Baxter family.

Drawing will be held at the Fieldwood Heritage Society's 21st annual dinner Sat., April 26 at the Canning Lions Hall. A benefit for Mabel Tupper and Daniel Huntley is scheduled for Sun., Feb. 24 at the Canning Legion from 1-5 p.m. Come out and enjoy an afternoon of musical entertainment, along with a pie/dessert auction and a 50/50 draw.

Everyone is welcome to attend with proceeds for the care and recovery of Mabel and Daniel, who were involved in an automobile accident Nov. 14 that left them with extensive injuries and lengthy rehabilitations.

Dovecote Haven is a non-profit organization that offers various spiritual enhancing workshops for a nominal fee with proceeds to the Centre in Medford.

Dovecote Haven workshop “Step Out of Fear” is a Circle of Light Celebration that will take place at the Centre Sat., March 1 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Initiated by Jeanne Allen and Sharon Lynk, you will receive simple and practical tips and exercises in spiritual development while participating in-group discussions in a non-denominational environment.

Allen blends her experience in education with her explorations in spiritual and energy work while Lynk combines her many years as community volunteer with her love and concern for Mother Earth and humanity. Together they have led Healing Circles for the past three years.
