White Rock news
by Pam Schofield (pamschofield@auracom.com)
Hello, again. Another week has passed and a new month begins. The good thing is it means we’re a little bit closer to spring.
The weather being so unpredictable is very hard on everyone’s immune systems. I found out that I have strep throat – oh, joy. It isn’t much in the scheme of things, but it’s annoying.
The card party Jan. 29 had another good turnout with 10 tables. Peter Allen won the men’s high and the women’s high went to Edna Roach. Leo Spinney won the low for the night and the door prize went to Mary Coldwell. The traveler didn’t go this week and the 50/50 went to Doug Maxwell.
Congratulations to all the winners. We don’t always say it, but thank you to everyone that helps out with the lunches and organizing this fun evening. Without the volunteers, it wouldn’t happen.
Happy birthday to Wanda Schofield, who is celebrating Feb. 7. Emily Oickle of Wallbrook (I think) is celebrating her birthday Feb. 7 as well. If I remember correctly, I think this is number three for her.
My sister, Janet Oickle, celebrates her birthday Feb. 9 and Ashton Pick celebrates his third birthday Feb. 10. A belated birthday wish goes out to Doug Maxwell, who I believe celebrated Jan. 30.
For anyone else that is celebrating a special day, best wishes for many more.
I received an e-mail from Malcolm Allen telling me he enjoys reading the news every week – thank you. I personally wish I could include more, but unfortunately my schedule does not allow me to be as involved in community events as my brother was.
I do enjoy the e-mails and I hope to get to know more community members in the future. I believe that to know your community members strengthens us and makes us happier. We are way too busy these days; I definitely know that, but I do try to make my busy times include family – that’s what it’s all about.
Malcolm included some news from 1945 in his e-mail: some names I recognize and some I don’t. It mentioned Mrs. Clifford Long and her two boys visiting her parents in Truro. Mrs. Ann Pick is mentioned, Clyde Pick and many other names.
I found it very interesting. If anyone would like to hear more of the news from back then, let me know and I can print excerpts in the following weeks.
The hockey tournament for the new players was held Jan. 26 and everyone had fun. I had to ask Dylan to play a position other than nets so I could get some pictures. It proved beneficial because he scored a goal – I took a picture of his celebration. It was a very busy day and I believe everyone had fun.
Branden had a game in Chester Feb. 2 and a tournament in Chester on March Break. This is what makes me busy, but I love cheering for them and seeing the smiles on their faces.
I heard the news recently about the passing of one of the community members and I wanted to send out my condolences to the family and friends of Earl Miles. Earl lived in White Rock for a while and then moved to Black River.
I remember he had ponies that my sister and I used to take for walks. Our thoughts are with the family and friends during their time of sorrow.
The White Rock Community meeting was held Jan. 30 and, during the meeting, there was a discussion of a fitness night. This activity is open to everyone: men, women and children, young and old.
If you would like to get out to add some fitness to your routine then maybe this is what you’re looking for. It’ll be every Wednesday night starting the first Wednesday in February from 7-8 p.m. and there will also be a walking night Sunday evenings. There will be more information on Wednesday.
If you want to bring an exercise mat, you’re welcome to do so. The hall does not have any at this time. We are seeking an instructor for this activity so if you are interested in doing this, you can contact Shelley Hill or come to the first night and speak to her there.
I think that’s all for this week. If I missed anything, I’m sorry. You can contact me if you have anything that you would like to submit.
Make sure you travel carefully on the icy roads and walks. Have a great week and I will talk with you again soon.
