Work continues on controversial pocket park
Work continued on the development of a controversial pocket park in the Bonavista Estates subdivision in Kentville Wednesday. A group of residents is opposed to the development because of the location and for safety and security concerns, and has lobbied town council to reverse a 2006 decision of the parks and recreation advisory committee to build the park in the subdivision’s designated green space. Town council has stood by the original decision. However, concerned residents are seeking a court order to have the work halted. They allege that the work began without the proper permits. A permit for the work has since been obtained, but the concerned residents contend there is no street frontage for the park and designated walkways are not wide enough to meet regulations. The court has yet to make a ruling on the matter. A group of residents in favour of the park development gathered recently with their children, who made this poster, complete with hand tracings and names, asking for the park to be developed so they can have a safe place to play.
