January 20 to January 26, 2008 GAVEL, Douglas Bruce - 77 years, Yarmouth, passed away January 22, 2008, in Tidal View Manor, Yarmouth. Born in Yarmouth on March 3, 1930, he was a son of the late Robert and Alva (Raynard) Gavel. Doug was an only child. Doug is survived by his wife of 55 years, Ruth (Churchill) Gavel; sons, James (Heather), Gary (Debbie); daughter, Judy (Glenn) Whitehouse; grandchildren, Jason (Krista), Jeremy (Denise), Brad (Erica), Elizabeth, Brenna, all of Bridgetown; great-grandchildren, Monisa, Arielle, Dawson, Ava. Doug worked in Val des Bois, Que., for 11 years at MacClaren Quebec Power before moving back to Yarmouth in 1963. In Yarmouth he worked for W.B. Bailey's for one year and then worked at Nova Scotia Power for the remainder of his working days. Doug enjoyed camping, boating, flying radio controlled planes, riding his scooter, and researching genealogy; he also enjoyed World War Two history. He loved his family dearly and was never happier than when we had our family get together. Doug's body has been donated to medical science. A memorial service was held Saturday, January 26, at 2: p.m. with Pastor Jim Agrell officiating, in Sweeny's Funeral Home, Yarmouth, visitation was Saturday from 1 p.m. to funeral time. January 20 to January 26, 2008 SWAINE, Margaret Elizabeth, 81, Barrington, Shelburne County died Sunday, January 20, 2008 at the Roseway Hospital, Sandy Point. Born in Barrington, she was a daughter of the late Winburn and Grace (Snow) Swaine. She was employed with the Tourist Bureau for a number of years until her retirement. She resided at the Surf Lodge, Lockeport for the last few months. She will be remembered as a dignified and loving aunt. Her many friends will miss her charm, humor and compassion. Marg’s wit was kept sharp by her avid pursuit of crossword puzzles, reading, crafts and various artistic creations. She also had a great love for music and was herself a great piano player. She was loved dearly and will be greatly missed by all who knew her. She is survived by long time friend and companion, Jack Smith, brother, Thomas (Phyllis); sister in law, Eleanor Swaine-Stanley; 6 nieces; 4 nephews; many great nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a brother, Richard. Cremation has taken place. Memorial service was held Saturday, Jan. 26 from the H. Huskilson’s Memorial Chapel, Barrington, Anthony Swim officiating. January 20 to January 26, 2008 Surette, Arnold Louis - Passed peacefully at Soldiers Memorial Hospital on Wednesday January 23, 2008 in his 79th year. Arnold, loving husband of Marlene, will be sadly missed by his daughters Corrine (Gary) Mossop and Lynn (Ian) Nicolson, and by his grandchildren Ryan, Kristin, Justin, Tyler, and Kaylee. Arnold’s memory will be cherished by his brothers Roy, Donald, Ronald, Clarence, Edward, Arthur, Delmer, and Benny, and by his sisters Freda, Laura, Nita, Angie, Betty, Christina, Leona, and Doris, and by many nieces and nephews. The family received friends at the Doolittle Chapel of Carson Funeral Homes, 54 Coldwater St. E. Orillia, (705) 326-3595, on Monday January 28, 2008 from 10 a.m. until the time of service at 11 o’clock. The service was followed by a time of refreshment at the Old Rectory. January 20 to January 26, 2008 SAVAGE, Patricia “Pat” Joan Marie - 64, of Middleton, passed away Wednesday, January 23, 2008 at home. Born in Middleton, she was the daughter of the late Danny and Joyce (Parker) McLaughlin. Pat was currently employed at the Valley Drug Mart, Middleton, where she was a dedicated employee for over 21 years. She is survived by her husband, Hugh Eric “Scotty”; daughters, Jaqueline Savage, Ireland; Sharon Rafuse, Windsor; son, David, Winnipeg; granddaughters, Teanna Joy, Moncton and Terissa Corinne, Bridgetown. She was predeceased by a daughter, Juliet. Cremation has taken place. Visitation was held Monday, January 28, 2008 in the Middleton Funeral Home, 398 Main Street, (902) 825-3448, where a memorial service was held 2:00 PM, Tuesday, January 29, 2008. Rev. January 20 to January 26, 2008 Vera Burnette Rogers – 66, of Kentville, passed away Thursday, January 24, 2008 in the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville. Born in Glace Bay, she was a daughter of the late Samuel and Elizabeth Vaters. In her younger years, she had been employed in Kentville at the Graves pickle plant and also worked nights at the Paramount Theatre. She was later employed with the former Blanchard Fraser Memorial Hospital and the Valley Regional Hospital from where she retired with 35 years of service. She enjoyed travelling, working outdoors, spending time with her family and friends and most of all, playing bingo. She is survived by her husband, John; a daughter, Tammie (Mike) Swindells, Kentville; a son, Fred, Aldershot; two sisters, Jean (Eric) MacIntosh, Glace Bay; Betty Campbell, Oromocto, New Brunswick; a brother, Edward (Myrtle) Vaters, Moncton, New Brunswick; four grandchildren, Corie Corkum, Jackie Rogers, Keely Bent and Nicholas Bent-Rogers; several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by an infant daughter, Lena; a sister, Louise Rohrbach; four brothers, Albert, Basil, John R. and Leonard. Cremation has taken place. Visitation was held from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Friday, January 25, 2008 in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville, where the funeral service, followed by a reception, was held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, January 26, 2008, Reverend Thelma McLeod officiated. January 20 to January 26, 2008 Gerald Dean “Gerry” Brown – 74, of North Alton, Kings County, formerly of Waasis, New Brunswick, passed away Thursday, January 24, 2008 in the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville. Born in South Alton, Kings County, he was a son of the late Arthur and Susan (Welton) Brown. He spent his childhood in Scott’s Bay, Kings County and had been employed with Sears in both Kentville and Windsor. He later moved to New Brunswick and worked in advertising for Medjuck’s. He was a peacetime veteran having served with the Canadian Armed Forces – Service Corps. He served for three years in Germany and achieved the rank of Corporal. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion in both New Brunswick and Nova Scotia (Kings Branch No. 6, Kentville). He was later employed in radio and television advertising in New Brunswick, from where he retired. He is survived by his fiancé and best friend, Lillian (Fraser) Brown; a daughter, Diane (Randy) Delaney, Oromocto, New Brunswick; a grandson, Jeremy; several nieces; two sisters-in-law, Marion Brown (Eugene Thibideau), Centreville and Joanne Wilson, Oromocto; his extended family, Paul (Eva) Brown, Murphy Lake; Randy (Janice) Brown, Lakeville and Rodney Brown, English Mountain Road and their families. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. He was predeceased by his wife, the former Loretta Young; a sister, Alice Maskell; a brother, Charles and an infant brother, Roy. Cremation has taken place under the direction of the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville and there was no visitation by family request. A combined Royal Canadian Legion and funeral service was held at 3:00 p.m. Sunday, January 27, 2008 in the North Alton Baptist Church, Reverend Quincy Collins officiated. Interment will take place at a later date in the Scott’s Bay Cemetery. Family flowers only, by request. Donations in memory may be made to the North Alton Baptist Church. Born in Aldersville, she was a daughter of the late Edgar and Florence (Hiltz) Burgoyne. Eva was a member of St. James Anglican Church, Kentville. She is survived by her husband, Alden; son, Kirk (Nancy), New Minas; grandchildren: Kevin, New Glasgow; Karen, New Minas; Kristy, New Minas; great grandchildren: Moriah, Austen, Timothy and Noah; sisters: Mary Walsh, Kingston; Helen Smith, Aylesford; Edith Russell, North Alton. She was predeceased by brothers: Perley Clifton and Ray. Cremation has taken place, under the care & direction of the Annapolis Valley Funeral Home, 34 Coldbrook Village Park Dr., (Exit 14), Coldbrook. A private funeral service was held 2:00 p.m. Thursday, January 24 in St. James Anglican Church, Kentville. Rev. Archdeacon Lynn Uzans officiated. Interment will be in Garden of Rest Cemetery, Kentville at a later date. No visitation or flowers by request. January 20 to January 26, 2008 ATKINSON, Alpheus Brown, 67, of Shelburne, formerly of Cape Sable Island, passed away at home on Thursday, January 24, 2008. Born in Cape Sable Island, he was a son of the late Lahlia Lake. Alphie was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He was a fisherman for over thirty years and later worked as a correction officer up until his retirement. He was an avid sportsman and loved deer hunting, bowling and playing darts. His body has been donated to science. He is survived by his wife, the former Ann Chaney; son, Bernard (Cindi), Shelburne; daughter, Christa (Troy), Yarmouth; brother, Bernard (Judy), Brampton, Ont; sister, Ruthanne Wideman, Yarmouth; grandchildren, Amber, Adam, Twyla and Matthew. He was predeceased by a son, Duane. A memorial service was held on Saturday, February 2 in H.M. Huskilson’s Funeral Chapel, Shelburne with Pastor Deborah Hill officiating. Interment of ashes at a later date. Memorial donations may be made to a charity of choice.
