January 13 to January 19, 2008 continued Nora V. Hunt – 58, of Kentville, passed away Thursday, January 17, 2008 in the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville as the result of a motor vehicle accident. Born in Port LaTour, Shelburne County, she was a daughter of Bernice Smith, Oak Park, Shelburne County. She was a homemaker and care-giver. She enjoyed music, dancing and was an associate member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Kings Branch No. 6, Kentville. She is survived by four sons, Timothy “Tim”; Benjamin “Benny” (Carol) and Robert “Rob” (Dawn), both of Kentville; Norman “Norm”, Glenmont; her good friend and former husband, Benjamin Hunt, White Rock, Kings County; a sister, Sheila (Perry) Hines; two brothers, John and Bobby Smith, all of Shelburne County; several grandchildren, nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a brother, Charles. Visitation was held from 7-9 p.m. Monday, January 21, 2008 in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville, where the funeral service was held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, January 22, 2008, Reverend Glen Donnellan officiating. Burial took place in the Elm Grove Cemetery, Steam Mill, Kings County. Donations in memory may be made to the Arthritis Society. On-line inquiries may be directed to www.whitefamilyfuneralhome.com. January 13 to January 19, 2008 continued Croft, Roy William “Jake” – 82 of Hillsview Acres, Middlefield, formerly of Charleston, passed away Friday, January 18, 2008 in the Queens General Hospital, Liverpool. Born in Riverdale, he was a son of the late Roy and Nellie (Murphy) Croft. He worked most of his working life in the road construction business. Jake loved anything to do with the outdoors, such as gardening, hunting, fishing and also having worked for a time as a hunting and fishing guide. He was well known for his playing the fiddle. He is survived by sisters, Eva Croft, Elsie (Douglas) Wamboldt, both of Milton; many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by sisters: Zelma, Helen, Maybelle, Olive, Dorothy and Maude; brothers: Vernon, Leman, Clyde, Percy, Harry, Laurie and James. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Chandlers Funeral Home, Liverpool. A graveside Memorial Service was held Monday, January 21, 2008 from the New Charleston Community Cemetery. Rev. Richard Bristo officiated.
January 13 to January 19, 2008 continued McBride, Lloyd - 92, of Caledonia, Queens County, passed away peacefully in North Queens Nursing Home, Caledonia, January 19, 2008. Born in West Caledonia, he was a son of the late John and Samantha (Trefry) McBride. Lloyd started his working career in 1930 with the North Queens Canning Factory and the Nova Scotia Woodenware “the Bucket Factory” in South Brookfield. He was involved in naval ship repair during World War two in Brooklyn and became a lumber grader/scaler for Caledonia Hardwood and Bowater Oakhill sawmill until his retirement in 1980. Lloyd was very active in his community. He was a member of Caledonia United Baptist Church serving as Deacon and Trustee for many years. He was a trustee for Harmony Cemetery and served on the Caledonia Board of Trade. He was a member of the Hunters and Land Owners Association, and a former member of the North Queens Fire Association. He was a volunteer canvasser for many organizations throughout North Queens. Among his favorite things to do were, gardening, fishing with his grandson, Chris and sharing his stories of the past with others. He is survived by his wife Roxie (Frail); son Douglas (Carolyn) of Halifax and grandson Christopher of Halifax. He was predeceased by his son Stillman; sisters, E. Helen Frail and Myrtle Mailman. Brothers, Gordon and Alvin. Funeral service was Wednesday, January 23rd, 2008 in Caledonia United Baptist Church. Rev. John Boddy officiated. Burial was in Harmony Cemetery. January 13 to January 19, 2008 continued REEVES, William Judson “Bill”- 72, of Brazil Lake, Yarmouth Co., passed away January 19, 2008 at the Yarmouth Regional Hospital. Born on January 24 1935 in Gardeners Mills, Yarmouth Co., he was a son of the late Everette and Clara (Crosby) Reeves. Bill was a member of the Pleasant Valley United Baptist Church. He worked with his father in the Lathe Mill and later operated K & B Lumber Ltd. In Gardeners Mill. Bill was part owner of V & R Traps, Yarmouth, owned his own truck and was a carpenter in earlier years. He was an avid horseshoe player and hunter, he played for and coached the Brazil Lakers, and enjoyed playing pool. Bill always had a good story to tell and was a good friend to everyone he met. Bill is survived by his loving wife of 49 years Betty; daughters Heather Jean (Charles) Shaw, Gardeners Mills; Flora Reeves, Brazil Lake; Cheryl Betty (Chris Ross) Reeves, Halifax; son Keith Owen (Virginia), Auburn, Alabama; sisters Helen Hurlburt, Gardeners Mill; Phyllis Devine, Dayton; Nancy Crowell, Cedar Lake; and grandchildren Clara, Jessie, Megan, Jordan, Kierstin, Annabel. Visitation was held Monday, January 21 from 2-4 and 7-9 in Sweeny’s Funeral Home, Yarmouth. Funeral services took place Tuesday, January 22 at 2:00pm at the Pleasant Valley United Baptist Church, Rev. Mike Cannell officiated. Burial took place in Pleasant Valley Cemetery. January 13 to January 19, 2008 continued ARCHER, Dorothy Irene - 95, Plymouth, passed away January 19, 2008, in Roseway Hospital, Shelburne. Born on November 27, 1912, she was a daughter of the late George and Sarah (Purdy) Sims. She was a member of Plymouth United Baptist Church. Dorothy was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Dorothy is survived by daughters, Helen (George) McGillivary, Guelph, Ont.; Susan Archer, Toronto, Ont.; sons, Donald (Helen) Archer, Shelburne; John (Connie) Archer, Berwick; Bruce Archer, Port Hope, Ont.; six grandchildren, two stepgrandchildren; six great-grandchildren; four step great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, R. Keith Archer; three brothers and four sisters. Visitation washeld Monday January 21 from 7-9 p.m. in Sweeny's Funeral Chapel, where funeral service was 2 p.m. Tuesday, Rev. Dennis Leamont officiated. January 13 to January 19, 2008 continued MacLEOD, Dorothy Elizabeth – 96, Yarmouth, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Saturday, January 19, 2008, at Huntington Place Senior’s Residence, Yarmouth. Born April 25, 1911 in St. Andrew’s, Antigonish Co., she was a daughter of the late Roderick and Mary (Leydon) MacIntosh. Dorothy worked as a Registered Nurse. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband Dan W. MacLeod; brothers, Rev. Alexander, SFM, Rev. James, SFM, Duncan, William F. and Donald; sisters, Christine and Teresa. She is survived by sisters-in-law Helen MacIntosh, Jean MacIntosh , Pauline MacIntosh, as well as many nieces and nephews. Cremation has taken place and there will be no visitation by request. Donations in memory can be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, the Alzheimer Society of Nova Scotia or the Yarmouth SPCA. January 13 to January 19, 2008 continued Marilyn Dewar – At St. Catharines General Hospital on Saturday, January 19, 2008, Marilyn Dewar (nee Jacques) of Smithville, Ontario in her 83rd year. Beloved wife for over 56 years to the late John William (Jack) Dewar (2007). Loving mother of Katharine Keizer and Sandra Dewar. Cherished by grandchildren Melanie Keizer, Jeremy Keizer (Elizabeth) and Philip Cofell. Dear sister-in-law of Chuck and Hazel Dewar of Brantford, niece Joan (Laverne) Clark of Blyth, Ontario, nephew Glen Dewar of Toronto and cousin Eric (Edna) Welton of Moncton, New Brunswick, and their families. Sadly missed by her many dear friends here and in Nova Scotia. Predeceased by her daughter Carol Ann Dewar, sister Doris Tibbetts and her parents Clyde and Edith Jacques. Marilyn was the head librarian at the Smithville Public Library which she helped create and organize for many years. She participated and volunteered in many community organizations and charities, and was a teacher at South Lincoln High School in Smithville in the 1950s. Rev. Gary Patterson officiated at the private family service held at Merritt Funeral Home, Smithville on Wednesday, January 23, 2008, the one-year anniversary of her husband Jack's death.
