Canada Post has set funds aside to support the changes to rural mail delivery service over the next five years to ensure safety for the Crown corporation’s employees.
The corporation has allotted up to $640 million in new spending to cover the costs of things such as a second person in delivery vehicles to maintain safety or to transition delivery modes for those who must.
There have been suggestions this review is a way for Canada Post to eliminate rural mail delivery or cut costs, but Canada Post spokesperson Tinna Bonner, said, “nothing could be further from the truth.”
Changing a customer’s mode of delivery will be considered only as a last resort, Bonner said. “We are legally obliged and morally responsible to conduct this review. Wherever possible, Canada Post will try to maintain the rural mailbox delivery.”
