January 13 to January 19, 2008 continued Malcolm Douglas Graves – 73, of Woodville, Kings County, passed away Friday, January 18, 2008 in the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville, surrounded by his loving family. Born in Kentville, he was a son of the late Malcolm and Gladys (Spencer) Graves. He was self-employed as a farmer and later worked for Canard Poultry for 18 years. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and spoiling his cat “Fluffy”. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 56 years, the former Bernice Brewster, two sons, Douglas (Bonnie Perry), North Bishop Road; Hughie, at home; five daughters, Helen (Bruce) Schofield, Cambridge; Janet (Donald) Pelton, Windemere; Darlene (Terry Gates) Graves, Halls Harbour; Laura Goucher, Cambridge; Tammy (James Beatty) Graves, Lloydminster, Alberta; 12 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren; two sisters, Betty (Gerald) Brewster, Kentville; Kathleen LeBlanc, Brooklyn Street. He was predeceased by four sisters, Hazel, Nellie, Rita and Lillian. Visitation was held from 7-9 p.m. Sunday, January 20, 2008 in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville, where the funeral service was held at 2:00 p.m., Monday, January 21, 2008, Reverend David Garrett officiated. Burial took place in St. John’s Anglican Church Cemetery, Church Street, Port Williams. Family flowers only, by request. January 13 to January 19, 2008 continued Dennis Newton – 83, New Minas, formerly of North Wallace and Shinimicas, Cumberland County, passed away peacefully, early on the morning of January 16th 2008, in the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville. Born in Lincolnshire, England, followed by a move to Australia, and at the age of nine moved to Canada with both his parents, Herbert & Dorothy (Chambers) Newton. He proudly served for Canada in the Second World War. Denis was a successful Dairy Farmer in both North Wallace and Shinimicas He is survived by his current wife, Hazel Newton, son, Ronnie (Sharon) Newton; daughter, Gwen (Stirling) Harris; step-daughter, Susan (Ken) Silver; grandchildren, Nicole Harris, Darren Newton; Danny (Agnieszka) Newton; great-grandchild, Chase Lee; two step-grandchildren. Besides his parents he was predeceased by his first wife, Willma (MacFarland) Newton. Dennis will be greatly missed by his family and friends. There will be no funeral service as per his wishes. A graveside service will be held in the spring, date yet to be set. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Mundle’s Funeral Home, 204 Water St., Pugwash (243-2506). January 13 to January 19, 2008 continued Thurston, Muriel Estella - of Sandford, Yarmouth Co. passed away on January 16 th at the age of 82. Born in Yarmouth she was the daughter of the late Percy & Estella Landers. She was predeceased by her husband Donald, Son Kent, Brother Gerald, & Sister Anna. Muriel was a member of the Sandford Wesleyan Church. She is survived by her beloved children Estella Thurston, Kentville and Reigh Thurston, Sandford; grandchildren Gina (Jeff) Leaman, Richmond Rd.; Brent Wood, Kentville; Percy (Sheena) Thurston, Darling Lake; Shane Wood, Kentville; great grandchildren Thomas, Logan, Brody and Kaitlyn; brothers Edgar (Marjorie) Landers, Sandford; Cedric (Marina) Landers, Moncton. Special thanks to family friend Ann Stevens, whose devotion to Muriel allowed her to stay in her home as long as she did. Muriel loved her lord, family and friends. She was a homemaker who enjoyed sewing, knitting, doing home perms, reading, cooking and playing games, especially Rook, Uno, and Parcheesi. Muriel loved to have her family and friends drop by for a home cooked meal and stay to play games. Muriel spent many hours camping with family and friends. Many an hour was spent at “pops Inn” with Cedric and Marina. In her younger years she enjoyed hunting, fishing and selling tupperware with her good friend Kay Morehouse. Visitation was held Friday, January 18th from 7-9pm in Sweeny's Funeral Home Yarmouth. Funeral service was held Saturday, January 19th at 2:00pm, in Sweeny's Funeral Home Chapel, Yarmouth, Rev. Bill Moore officiated. Burial took place in Chegoggin Cemetery. Donations in memory of Muriel may be made to the VON or a charity of your choice.
January 13 to January 19, 2008 continued LeBLANC, Marion Rose – 92, Nakile Home for Special Care, Argyle, and formerly of Wedgeport, Yarmouth Co., passed away on Thursday, January 17, 2008, in the home. Born May 9, 1915 in Wedgeport, she was a daughter of the late Louis and Julienne (Doucette) LeBlanc. She worked as a homemaker. Surviving are her children, Anna (Stanley) Davis, Lower Wedgeport; Paul (Edna) LeBlanc, Jeanette Corporon, Ernest (Andrea) LeBlanc, Vernon (Louise) LeBlanc, all of Wedgeport; Margaret Rose (Ernest “Buddy”) Thompson, Pembroke; 20 grandchildren; 22 great grandchildren; 7 great-great grandchildren; sisters, Velma Doucette, Yarmouth; Katie Doucette, Lower Wedgeport; Rose Marie Atkinson, Wedgeport; brothers, Leonard (Linda) LeBlanc, Rockville; William “Bill” LeBlanc, Wedgeport. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Bruno A. LeBlanc; a daughter, Pauline, in infancy; sisters, Daisy Fitzgerald, Edna Vacon, Marguerite Surette; brothers, Howard LeBlanc, Martin LeBlanc. Visitation took place from 7-9 Friday evening in H. M. Huskilson’s Funeral Home, Wedgeport. The funeral mass was held at 11 AM, Saturday, January 19 from Saint Michael’s Catholic Church, Wedgeport, Father Wieslaw Papuga officiated. January 13 to January 19, 2008 continued Mountain, Kings County, passed away Thursday, January 17, 2008 in the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville. Born in Gaspereau, she was a daughter of the late Axmoth and Lottie (Stivers) Davison. She was a devoted wife, caring for her husband of over 50 years, and during a lengthy illness. She was a resident of Gaspereau Mountain all of her life, a faithful member of the Grand Pré Congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses and zealous in her ministry of preaching about God’s Kingdom. Throughout her life, Lexie was an avid reader, with a creative mind and extensive interests. She is survived by a son, Bradley (Marie), Berwick; a sister, Myrna Keddy, Melanson; two brothers, Ashley, Gaspereau Mountain; Sheldon (Elsie), Kentville; two grandchildren, Heidi Davidson-Crowell (Chris), New Minas; Cynthia (Alex) MacIsaac, Sackville; three great grandchildren, Marcus, Marshall and Mason. In addition to her husband, Garnett, she was predeceased by an infant daughter, Gale; five sisters, Seva Klein, Rhoda West, Hazel Faulkenham, Phyllis Bezanson and Florence Jones; five brothers, Alton, Pearley, Lowell, Athlton and Geoh. Cremation has taken place under the direction of the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville, where visitation was held from 7-9 p.m. Sunday, January 20, 2008. The funeral service was held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, January 21, 2008 in the Grand Pré Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses, Mr. Marshall Schofield officiated. January 13 to January 19, 2008 continued Wagner, Gertraud “Gerdi” – Carleton, N.S. - A proud and determined lady, died peacefully in her 53rd year in the morning hours of January 17, 2008, at home in Carleton, Nova Scotia. Born on February 18, 1954 in Meuldorf, Germany, Gerdi was the youngest daughter of Marianne Brandl and the late Hans Brandl. Gerdi grew up in Germany, starting her working career in the Black Forest region, then while still a young woman, met and married her life-long partner, husband Ludwig. Gerdi visited Nova Scotia in 1979 on holiday, and in 1985 she and Ludwig, along with their young son, Tommy, realized their dream and moved to Carleton to start their business. Gerdi worked side by side with her husband in their“Bavaria Restaurant” for 22 years, having just retired on January 2, 2008. Gerdi was predeceased by her father Hans. She is survived by her husband Ludwig (Carleton), son Thomas (Kemptville), mother Marianne (Germany), her sisters and their spouses- Marianne, Ingrid and Hansi (all in Germany). Gerdi had a zest for life that was contagious to be around, and will long be remembered for her warmth and hospitality to all who entered her door. A memorial service for Gerdi was held at 2 pm on Monday, January 21, at Sweeny’s Funeral Home in Yarmouth. A donation in Gerdi’s memory may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society-Nova Scotia Division. January 13 to January 19, 2008 continued Butler, Lorna C. (Francis) - 87, of Milton, Queens County, passed away peacefully, in Queens General Hospital, Liverpool, January 17, 2008. Born in Milton, she was a daughter of the late Archibald and Merle (Hirtle) Labrador. In her early years Lorna was active in the Milton schools and was a leader in the local 4H Club. She was a member of Mersey Branch #38, Royal Canadian Legion, Liverpool. She moved to Massachusetts in 1962 where she became employed with the Wayland Police Department retiring in 1974. She was a member of Allston Post of the Canadian Legion in Massachusetts as well as a member of Post #69, American Legion. She returned to Nova Scotia in 1984 where she resided in Milton once again. She is survived by her son David (Marion) Francis of Avon Park Fla., 10 grandchildren, and a number of great grandchildren and great great grandchildren; Sister Peg Seamone of Mass. She was predeceased by her first husband Frederick Francis; second husband John Butler; daughter Barbara; sons Paul and Michael. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Chandlers’ Funeral Home, Liverpool. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Online condolences may be made at www.chandlersfuneral.com.
