Thorne, Edith Frances (Hill), writer, dramatist, wife and mother, died peacefully at her adopted home in Liverpool, NS, early Friday. She was 93. Born Sept. 2, 1914, in Charlottetown, she was the daughter of the late James Henry and Annie Gladys (MacMillan) Hill. She attended Prince Street School and Prince of Wales College, both in Charlottetown. She later had a weekly radio program on Charlottetown-based CFCY-AM Radio in the 1930s, giving dramatic readings of well-known books. She went to Emerson College in Boston and earned a degree in literary interpretation, majoring in drama and speech. From 1939-1941, she taught at Ontario Ladies College, later to become Trafalgar Castle School, in Whitby, Ont, where she became head of speech and drama. In 1941, she moved to Sydney, NS, to serve as a civilian navy decoder, tracking Second World War convoys between North America, Great Britain and Murmansk in what was then the Soviet Union. It was in Sydney where a mutual friend introduced her to her future husband, Pilot Officer Edward Lefferts (Ted) Thorne, an air force doctor. Aboard a streetcar in a January 1942 snowstorm in Halifax, he asked her to marry him. A month later, they exchanged vows in Toronto. Her husband shipped overseas later that summer, as a flight-lieutenant and medical officer with RCAF fighter squadrons and Bomber Command until 1945. She returned to Charlottetown, where she worked at Wellner’s Jewelry Store. Upon her husband’s return, the couple moved for a year to Calgary, where they had their first child, Edward Lefferts IV. They returned to Halifax in 1947 and had the second of their four children, Ann Kathryn. She was followed by Susan Frances and Stephen James. Edith Thorne was a patron of the arts and a longtime supporter of Neptune Theatre, the Nova Scotia Art Gallery and the Atlantic Symphony Orchestra in Halifax. She was also a lifelong fishing enthusiast, whether it was trout fishing near the family’s summer home in Wood Islands, P.E.I., or hook-and-line fishing for cod in the Northumberland Strait. She netted two fish during her last fishing trip, two years ago near Liverpool. With her children grown, she returned to school later in life, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree at Mount Saint Vincent University in Halifax. While there, she played the lead role in a stage production about Nova Scotia folklorist Helen Creighton. During these years, she wrote extensively about her life growing up in Prince Edward Island. She is survived by daughter, Dr. Susan Thorne of Liverpool; sons, Ted Thorne (Patti) of Millarville, Alta., and Stephen Thorne of Ottawa; six grandchildren: Matthew and Christopher Yetman of Toronto, Sarah and Ted Thorne of Calgary, Katherine Thorne of Ottawa, and John Thorne of Halifax.
