Port LaTour and Baccaro power outages to be addressed
Nova Scotia Power will be inspecting fuses and reviewing tree trimming prioritizations to address concerns in Port LaTour and Baccaro.
The Municipality of Barrington brought recent power outages in the area to the attention of the company and requested more maintenance.
A customer service manager will be contacting MoB to review regular maintenance programs and other actions.
Interim building inspector appointed
Carl Smith, the building inspector for the Municipality of Shelburne has been appointed Acting Development Officer, Acting Fire Inspector and Acting Building Inspector for the Municipality of Barrington until a new employee is hired.
MoB’s former building inspector, Andrew Goreham, resigned his position last December to accept a job with the Municipality of Argyle.
Circle Drive doesn’t qualify
A cost sharing paving project submitted by the Municipality of Barrington for Circle Drive on Sherose Island does not qualify for funding assistance because it is not a Department of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal owned road.
The DOT is only willing to cost share solely on department owned roads.
Family medicine resident assisted by municipality
The Municipality of Barrington (MoB) will not be charging rent to Dr. Courtney Smith for the apartment it owns in the Community Health Centre during her stay of three months.
Dr. Smith, a second year family medicine resident with Dalhousie University, will be completing her residency assisting Dr. Kenny Yee in his practice at the centre from April 9 to June 30.
The MoB will also be paying a portion of the three-month cost of space for Dr. Smith in Dr. Abud’s office.
Money starting to flow for fire departments
The Island & Barrington Passage Fire Department will be receiving $59,079, and the Barrington Fire Department $18,000 from the Municipality of Barrington as a 40 per cent advance of the Emergency Services Provider Fund.
The Province will be paying 60 per cent of the total amount of $300,000 that will be directed towards these fire departments and the Woods Harbour Fire Department.
The Emergency Services Provider Fund is a $5-million, one-year provincial funding program for volunteer fire departments and emergency response organizations such as the ground search and rescue and hazardous material organizations.
Barrington Ground Search and Rescue renovations approved
The Municipality of Barrington has approved a renovation project submitted by the Ground Search and Rescue to their headquarters at the former Barrington Passage Fire Department.
A new ceiling with insulation, floor beams and wall extension will be built. The organization wants to upgrade the building to Emergency Comfort Station status for Red Cross purposes.
The estimated cost of the project is $13,580 and may be assisted 60 per cent through the Emergency Services Provider Fund.
Municipality of Barrington writes off uncollectible taxes
The Municipality of Barrington has written off outstanding taxes and interest, totaling $99.30, on a camp lease in the name of Ryan Thomas who has moved to Alberta.
The MoB has also recognized outstanding business occupancy taxes and interest totaling $4,300 owed by Joval International as uncollectible.
The company, which operated a clothing store at the Causeway Mall in Barrington Passage, became insolvent on Dec. 13, 2007 and went into receivership.
Work on Woods Harbour trail to resume
Tenders will soon be advertised for the multi-purpose trail in Wood’s Harbour with work expected to resume this spring.
Last fall when $114,000 in unforeseen costs arose, work was halted while the Municipality of Barrington decided how best to treat the matter.
Horner Associates will be redesigning the sidewalk portion of the trail using an urban profile so it can be constructed as far as possible within the existing budget.
The trail, which runs between Cemetery Road and Post Office Road on the former CNR trackbed, was originally designed to be 2.8 kilometres in length but is now expected to be shorter. The total funds initially available were $679,000.
