Parking fines for out of order metres?
Although it’s written in the parking bylaw, many drivers may not be aware they will be fined for using a parking space with an out-of-order metre.
“The bylaw states if a person parks at a failed metre they should move their car to a functioning parking metre or be subject to a fine,” said Region of Queens Mayor, John Leefe.
After hearing about a person having to recently pay this parking fine, Counc. Darlene Norman brought it forth at the Jan. 15 Committee of the Whole meeting, as she was not aware of such a fine.
The Region of Queens’ parking bylaw respecting failed parking metres mirrors most other municipal bylaws in the province, added Mayor Leefe.
Committee members discussed changing the bylaw so those who park in a failed parking metre space will no longer be fined.
The common sense of it is, said the mayor, drivers do not purposely drive around looking for a failed parking metre.
For the most part, drivers are not aware of the out-of-order parking metre until they get out of their vehicle.
The mayor said an amendment would be made to council for consideration, most likely in February.
