Spartans place second at Warriors’ Invitational
The North Queens Spartans battled it out against Barrington in the Warriors second annual South Shore Invitational championship game, with Barrington coming out on top.
Six teams competed in the Warriors South Shore invitational Jan. 11-12, which included Barrington, Lunenburg, Forest Heights, Parkview, North Queens and Liverpool.
“We learned as a team that we cannot take a minute or possession off. As a team we just have to have that frame of mind of not relaxing and not focusing because there will be no regionals if we do that,” said coach Mustapha Maynard.
Liverpool played their first game against Lunenburg, winning 69-62.
Their next competition was against Park View with a final score of 70-52 for Liverpool.
They later played Lunenburg for a second time, winning 79-65, which placed Liverpool third in the tournament.
North Queens Spartan’s team manager Tanya Merry thought the team did a really good job.
They kicked off the tournament defeating Forest Heights 68-52.
North Queens then won their game against Barrington 87-78 that same day.
On Jan. 12 they played Lunenburg coming out on top with a score of 94-56.
They took on Barrington for the championship but lost 78-57.
Maynard declared the tournament a huge success.
“It was very good to see faces in the crowd from our community, along with tremendous support from family and friends of each team,” he said.
He thanks everyone who sponsored the event, his coaching staff, Liverpool Regional High School as well as the volunteers.
Tournament all-stars include Liverpool Warriors player Tristan Fancy, North Queens Spartans player Jason Fancy, North Queens Spartans player TJ MacNutt, Barrington Barons player Matt d’Entremont, who was also the tournament MVP, and Barrington Barons player Keith Nickerson.
