Laurie Kendall Porter Sr. – 86, of Grand Pré, Kings County, passed away Saturday, January 12, 2008 at home. Born in Billtown, he was a son of the late Stuart and Edith (Manson) Porter. He worked for several years on the family farm in both Billtown and on Park Street, Kentville. He later continued his work with C. W. Fairn in Wolfville for several years following which he worked for Moir’s in Halifax. In his later years, Laurie enjoyed working with the public in the fruit and vegetable industry. Laurie also delivered fish and farm goods from suppliers in the valley to customers in Halifax. One of Laurie’s passions was to work as a mechanic and over the years, enjoyed many types of motorcycles and antique cars. In his spare time, he enjoyed playing tunes on the mouth organ and the accordion. Together with his wife of 63 years, he enjoyed spending time with his many family members. Friends old and new throughout the community came to know Laurie through his many stories and experiences. He always had a smile for everyone he knew and you could always tell that Laurie wasn’t very far away by his whistle. He is survived by his wife, the former LaVaughn “Bonnie” Cook; five daughters, Marilyn (Douglas) Moore, Kentville, grandchildren, Sharmon, Angie and Douglas Jr.; Donna (Greg) Marquis, Quispamsis, New Brunswick, grandson, Joey; Leona Porter, Wolfville, grandchildren, Meaghan and Hawley; Carolyn (Kevin) Keddy, Grand Prairie, Alberta, grandchildren, Katelynn and Justin; Debra Porter, Wolfville; seven sons, Dean (Brenda), Milford, grandson, Dean and grandchildren, Kimberly and Charles; Gerald (Shirley), Kentville, grandchildren, Melissa and Corinne; Donald (Lila), Port Williams, grandchildren, Teresa (Peter) Orser and Katrina (Dillon) Belisle; Lionel, Grand Pré; Laurie Jr., Grand Pré, grandchildren, Alicia (Patrick) Pilon and Gregory; Stephen (Alma), Hantsport, grandchildren, Kirt and Jennifer; Terry, Kentville, grandchildren, Kristen, Amelia, Jamie-Lee, Colton, Josh and Noah; several great grandchildren; nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a daughter, Judith; two sons, Reginald and Gregory; four sisters, Hilda, Norma, Violet and Colleen; a brother, Donald. Visitation was held from 7-9 p.m. Wednesday, January 16, 2008 in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville. The funeral service, followed by a reception, will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, January 17, 2008 in the Wolfville Baptist Church, Reverend Doctor Barry Morrison officiating. Burial will take place in the Willowbank Cemetery, Wolfville. Family flowers only, by request. Donations in memory may be made to the Valley Regional Hospital or the Wolfville Baptist Church. John Frederic “Jack” Herbin – 79, of Wolfville, Kings County, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family, on Wednesday, January 9, 2008 in the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville. Born in Wolfville, he was the son of the late Frederic and Dorothy (Lynch) Herbin. Jack was a jeweler in Wolfville for over 50 years, continuing with the family tradition. He was active as a volunteer with many organizations and community affairs. He cared passionately for his family, friends, community and the outdoors. He was a lifelong member of St. John’s Anglican Church, Wolfville. He is survived by his wife, the former Gail Harvey; three sons, Fred (Camille), grandchildren, Jillian and Lorrie; Peter (Christine), grandchildren, Jennie, Alex and John; David (Vicki), grandson, Ben; a daughter, Pam; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two sisters, Joan Perry and Felice Willden. Visitation was held from 3-6 p.m. Friday, January 11, 2008 in St. John’s Anglican Church, Wolfville. The funeral service was held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, January 12, 2008, also in St. John’s Anglican Church, Wolfville, Reverend Cathy Lee Cunningham Ritcey officiated. DOUCET, Minnie Anne – 92, Villa St. Joseph-du-Lac, Dayton, and formerly of Wedgeport, Yarmouth Co., passed away on Thursday, January 10, 2008 in Yarmouth Regional Hospital. Born April 8, 1915 in Wedgeport, she was a daughter of the late Jean Elisée and Lucie (LeBlanc) Cottreau. She worked at Cosmos Imperial Mills/Dominion Textiles, Yarmouth, as well as with A. L. LeBlanc Fisheries, Wedgeport. She also worked with her husband in the United States. Minnie was a member of the Wedgeport New Horizons and she enjoyed quilting and knitting. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Surviving are her children, Don (Corinne) Pothier, Raymond (Elise) Doucette, both of Wedgeport; David (Sharon) Doucet, Donnelly, Alberta; Linda (Andy) Smith, Deerfield; grandchildren, Michele (Adrien) Aucoin-Pothier, Suzette Pothier, both of Victoria, BC; Normie (Lucille) Doucette, Wedgeport; Sherisse Doucette (George Wilson), Yarmouth; Todd Doucet, Peace River, Alberta; Joel (Marilyn) Doucet, Grand Prairie, Alberta; Tara-Lee (Daryl) Boc, Manning, Alberta; Mark Smith, Brendon Smith, both of Sackville, NB; great grandchildren, Sophia Pothier, Ava Claire Doucet, Connor Boc, Dereck Doucet, Julien Doucet, Joline Doucette. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her first husband, Leonard Pothier, as well as by her second husband, Pius Doucet; a son, Jerry Doucet; brothers, Louis, Willie, Dennis; sisters, Margaret, in infancy, Virginia, Jeanne, Aurelie and Irène. Visitation took place from 2-4, 7-9 Friday, with prayers at 8 PM, both in H. M. Huskilson’s Funeral Home, Wedgeport. The funeral mass was held at 11:00 AM, Saturday, January 12 from Saint Michael’s Catholic Church, Wedgeport, Father Wieslaw Papuga officiated. Interment followed in the parish cemetery. Mildred Naomi Hiltz - 90, Halifax, formerly of Berwick, passed away January 11, 2008, in Maplestone Nursing Home, Halifax. FRONTAIN, Dennis John - 94, of Greenwood, NS, passed away Monday, January 7, 2008 in the Veteran’s Unit of Soldiers Memorial Hospital, Middleton, NS. Born in Cape St. Mary, Digby County, he was a son of the late Vincent and Elizabeth (Deveau) Frontain. In early years Dennis was a fisherman in Cape St. Mary. He served with the Canadian 5th Armored Division and the Cape Breton Highlanders from 1941-1946. He later served with the RCAF from 1946-1957. Dennis retired from C.E. Section, CFB Greenwood. He enjoyed the outdoors and was an avid hunter. He is survived by daughters, Arletta (Richard Hiltz) Frontain, Yarmouth; Melissa (Gordon Daniels) Frontain, Wilmot, NS; sons, Ian (Kathryn), Greenwood; Wayne, Mount Hanley; David, Greenwood; sister, Rita Jeddry, Cape St. Mary, Digby Co.; grandchildren, Deanna Muise; Tammy Dunlop; Dylan Nickerson; Alycia Andrews-Frontain; Rebecca Frontain; Domenic Frontain; Nicholas Daniels; Jonathon Frontain; Robert Frontain and 7 great grandchildren. Marshall B. Turner, 86 of Dartmouth formerly of Smith's Cove passed away Jan. 8, 2008, in Dartmouth General Hospital. Born in Litchfield, Annapolis County, he was the son of Charles and Adellas (Milbury) Turner. He was a veteran of the Canadian Army, serving in Canada during the Second World War. As a young man, Marshall worked on gypsum boats sailing out of Hantsport. An electrician and plumber, he worked for the Canadian Coast Guard in Dartmouth as relief lighthouse keeper and technician until his retirement. He was an avid gardener and a very special person to family and friends. He was predeceased by companion, Dorothy Barteaux. He is survived by a son, Greg (Elaine) Turner, Smith's Cove; two granddaughters, Angela, Daegu, South Korea; Lisanne, Wolfville; special extended family members, Ron Barteaux and Valerie, Wayne (Brenda) Barteaux and Peter (Kathleen) Barteaux, the Barteaux grandchildren, Steven, Shawn, Angela and Timmy, all of Dartmouth, Claudine, Liverpool ; five sisters, Esther (Edwin) Guest, Rowena Weekes, both of Annapolis Royal; Blanche (Ernest) Taylor, Bridgetown; Olive Benway, Old Orchard Beach, Maine; Virginia (Leon) Robertson, Dartmouth; and several nieces and nephews. WELLWOOD, Marion Linden - 97, Rawdon Gold Mines. Marion Linden Wellwood died peacefully in Dykeland Lodge, Windsor, on Wednesday, January 9, 2008. Born September 9, 1910 in Stanley, she was a daughter of the late James and Mary (Clark) Northup. Marion was actively involved in all aspects of church and community life and worked tirelessly for the good of both. She was recognized with an award for outstanding volunteer service to her community. Marion and her husband George's home was open and welcoming to everyone. She had an inner faith and strength that sustained her throughout her long life. She is survived by a son, Earl (Annabelle) Wellwood, Rawdon Gold Mines; daughter, Verna Munroe, Halifax; grandchildren, Ruth (Ben) Hawkins and Cathy (Serge Choquette) Munroe, Ontario; Stephen (Kim) Wellwood, Rawdon; Craig Munroe, Lunenburg; as well as seven great-grandchildren and three step great-grandchildren; foster daughters, Marilyn (Paul) McPhee, Nine Mile River, and Marina Bowes (Jim), Milford and their families; sister, Hortense Cochrane, Windsor. She was predeceased by her husband, George in 1992; brothers, Earl, Roy, Victor, Dudley, and Vernon; sisters, Pauline and Emily; son-in-law, Austin Munroe. EVANS, Stephen “Steve” Anthony – 46 of Hatchet Lake, Halifax County passed away Thursday, January 10, 2008 at home. Born in Digby he was a son of Roy and Katharine (Whitman) Evans, Kingston, N.S. In early years he worked on the family farm and later joined the Royal Canadian Navy, training as a cook. After leaving the Navy he was a meat cutter and cook for a period of time in various locations. Stephen also worked with his mother as a salesman in her business “Ewe Wear” for several years. Most recently was employed at the QE II Health Sciences Centre, Halifax. Stephen’s outgoing personality was an asset in any position he held. Surviving, besides his parents, are sisters Cynthia (Allan) Gates, Abbotsford B.C.; Katharine (Bert Hudgins) Evans, Kingston. Brothers Herbert (Thania) and David (Julie) both of Kingston. He was predeceased by his life partner Oran Mosher. By request, visitation will not take place. A celebration of Stephen’s life was held Wednesday, January 16th followed by a reception in the Middleton Funeral Home, 398 Main St., (902) 825-3448, Mr. George LeBlanc officiated, with interment at a later date. A memorial service will also take place at the QE II Health Sciences Centre, day and time to be announced later.
