Burton Francis “Burt” Fredericks -58, Berwick, Kings Co. passed away Sunday January 6, 2008, in the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville. Born in Berwick, he was a son of the late Irleen Fredericks. Burt will be missed for his jokes and attending flea markets throughout the valley. He enjoyed visiting his friends for coffee. Burt enjoyed his job as a crosswalk guard in Berwick, where he loved to help the children and keep them safe. He will be sadly missed by his many family & friends. Surviving are his wife, Linda Haggerty, step-children, Steven (Crystal) Haggerty, Karen (Steven) Ramey, all of Berwick; brother, Percy Fredericks, Clementsvale; sisters, Barb Fretwell, Windsor; Beatrice Ferguson, Ont.; Mae Fredericks, Dartmouth; Rose Doucette, Saskatoon, Sask.; four grandchildren. He was predeceased by a brother, Bill Fredericks. Visitation has taken place and a private funeral service took place on Wednesday January 9, in the Berwick Baptist Church, 265 Commercial St., Berwick. Rev. Marilyn Rose officiated, with burial in the Berwick Cemetery. Donations in his memory may be made to the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia. Arthur Leslie “Art” Selfridge – 62, of Kentville, formerly of Dartmouth, passed away Sunday, January 6, 2008 at home. Born in Kentville, he was a son of the late Lew and Maude (Bowlby) Selfridge. He had been employed with Department of National Defence Construction first as a draftsman and later as an engineering service technician, from where he retired. He was an avid hockey enthusiast and Toronto Maple Leafs fan. He enjoyed boating, bass fishing and spending time at his cottage on Aylesford Lake. Art took great pride in his vehicles and enjoyed travelling, especially to Florida. He is survived by his wife, the former Dianna (Moore) (Ivany) and her children, Jamie (Donna), Petawawa, Ontario; Cindy (Steve) Menzies, Berwick; Michael (Donna), Cambridge; Wendy (Robert) Ward, London, Ontario. Known affectionately as “Art”, he will be sadly missed by the grandchildren, Tia, Alison, Amy, Megan, Samantha, Olivia, Logan, Nicholas, Katie, Kyla, Rauri, Haley and Claire. He is also survived by a sister, Janet (John) Gillies, Dartmouth; a brother, Robert “Bob” (Anne), Kentville; nieces, Katherine Selfridge and Deborah Robbins; nephews, Robert, David and Shawn Selfridge, Jonathan, James and Justin Gillies, Phillip Robbins. He was predeceased by his first wife, the former Sandra Coffill. Cremation has taken place under the direction of the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville and there will be no visitation by family request. The funeral service, followed by a reception, was held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, January 10, 2008 in St. James Anglican Church, Kentville, Archdeacon Lynn Uzans officiated. MOTT, Lawrence “Larry” Charles - 87, of Yarmouth, passed away January 6 2008 at the Yarmouth Regional Hospital. Born in Halifax on July 7 1920, he was a son of the late Charles and Maud (Patterson) Mott. Larry was a member of the Yarmouth Lions Club. He was a former employee of Ford Motors, and also Acadian Bus Lines. Larry drove for Tri Star Industries in Yarmouth in his later years. He enjoyed working and restoring old cars. He is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, the former Pauline V. Jameson; son Lawrence B. “Larry”; grandson Nathan; granddaughter Jazmin; great-grandson Noah; daughter Donna (Fin) Stirling; grandson Shawn and Craig; two great-granddaughters Piper and Sydney; daughter Nancy Jane (Jim) Nauss; grandson Kurt; granddaughter Kelli; and great-grandchildren Katie and Ryan. Larry was predeceased by his first wife Ruth, infant brother Blair, sister Vivian at the age of two years. Visitation was held Friday, January 11 from 7-9pm, Funeral service was Saturday at 2:00pm, both held in Sweeny’s Funeral Home. Burial will take place in the Spring at Yarmouth Mountain Cemetery. LOGAN, Dorothy Madeline (nee Henderson) February 14th, 1919 - January 6, 2008 - After a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease Dorothy passed away peacefully January 6, 2008 at Villa St. Joseph du Lac in Yarmouth NS. Dorothy was predeceased by her loving husband Donald Logan May 5, 2001, her sister Enid Germain, and brother Parker Henderson. She is survived by her son William Lambeth (Beverley) of Courtenay BC, her grandchildren Jacqueline Lambeth and Todd Lambeth, and two great grandchildren. Also nephew Brian Germain (Deborah) and nieces Carolyn Nobes (Tim) and Susan Churchill (Bruce.) A native of Yarmouth, Dorothy loved the Yarmouth area and spent her entire life there. She was an active member of the Yarmouth Curling Club and the Yarmouth Golf club in her younger years, and was ladies club captain of the golf club. Dorothy will be sadly missed by all who knew her. Funeral service was held 11:00 AM, Thursday January 10th at Holy Trinity Anglican Church, 61 William Street, Yarmouth Nova Scotia Donations to the Alzheimer’s society would be greatly appreciated. WILLIAMS, Hugh Alexander - 77, of Yarmouth, passed away January 6 2008 at the Yarmouth Regional Hospital. Born on May 24 1930, in Cornwall, Ontario, he was a son of the late Walter and Jessie Anna (Parr) Williams. Hugh served 7 years with the Royal Canadian Regiment. He was a farm laborer by trade. Hugh is survived by common-law wife Betty Hatfield and her children Tammy, John, Philip and Lyndell; brothers Robert, Thomas, Edward, all of Ontario; sisters Isabelle Saya, Mildred Williams, Gwenth Campbell, Lillian McJerrison, all of Ontario. He was predeceased by brothers Kenneth and David; wife Pearl (nee Thibideau). Visitation was Tuesday, January 8 from 7-9pm with a Royal Canadian Legion Branch #61 Yarmouth Service at 7:15pm. Funeral service took place Wednesday at 2:00pm, Rev. A.D. Bill Newell officiated. Both were held in Sweeny’s Funeral Home Chapel. Burial took place in Riverside Cemetery, Hebron. Donations may be made in Hugh’s memory to the Lung Association.

Elizabeth Janett Pettigrew – 77, of Cambridge, Kings County, passed away Monday, January 7, 2008 at home. Born in Greenwich, Kings County, on September 12, 1930, she was the youngest daughter of the late Harold and Myrtle (Davison) Schofield. During her early life, she worked as a telephone operator for Maritime Tel & Tel and Bell Telephone. She was a graduate of Mack Business College and worked as a medical receptionist until starting her own business - Pandora’s Specialties. Music was always a part of her life and she enjoyed singing in the Kentville United Baptist Church choir. As an active member of the church, she was president of the Dorcas Society and enjoyed her time as a Sunday school teacher. She also enjoyed many years in the Centreville Baptist Church, where she was active in the choir for a number of years. She was also active for a time with the Evening Workers Auxiliary and performed other activities in the church when called upon. Elizabeth enjoyed travelling and enjoyed her times in Europe as well as many parts of the United States and Canada. In 1968, Elizabeth joined the Order of the Eastern Star, Evangeline Chapter No. 15, Kentville. She served as Star Point Ruth and Chaplain. She served as Worthy Matron in Evangeline Chapter and while being active in her chapter, was given the honor of being the Grand Chaplain in the Grand Chapter of Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island. Elizabeth was always reaching for the top and in 1991-92 served in the highest office attainable in the Grand Chapter of Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island, as Worthy Grand Matron. Elizabeth loved her family and enjoyed the family gatherings. She was happiest when she could entertain friends and family at special functions. One time while visiting family in Ontario for her 76th birthday, she was happy to receive a telephone call from George Canyon wishing her a happy birthday - that being the topic of conversation for quite some time. She is survived by her husband, Keith; three daughters, Mary Donna Brown, Ontario; Janice Pettigrew, Pugwash; Barbara Ann Harnish (Chris), Ontario; two sons, Eric Pettigrew (Susan), Bridgewater; Paul Pettigrew (Anne), Cambridge; eight grandchildren, Lisa, Michelle, Kimberly, Kenneth, Mallory, Ashton, Sonya and Hilary; seven great grandchildren, Samantha, Amanda, Jeremy, Christopher, Rebecca, Dion and Jacob; a brother, Douglas Schofield (Dorothy), Moncton. She was predeceased by four sisters, Elsie, Beatrice, Margaret, Bernice; two brothers, Kenneth and Hugh. Visitation was held from 7-8:30 p.m. with an Order of the Eastern Star service held at 7:00 p.m. Thursday, January 10, 2008 in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville, where the funeral service, followed by a reception, was held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, January 11, 2008, Reverend Marc Potvin officiating. A private family burial took place in the Elm Grove Cemetery, Steam Mill, Kings County. Family flowers only, by request. GAVEL, Donald “Donnie” Junior - 60, of Yarmouth, passed away January 7 2007 at home. Born on July 29 1947 in Yarmouth, he was the son of Donald and Marion (Hicks) Gavel. Donnie was a carpenter all his life. He was a past member of the Kinsmen Club in Yarmouth. Donnie loved hunting and fishing. He is survived by brothers Paul (Evelyn), Frankford, Ont.; Gordon, Arcadia; sister Darla (Rick) Boudreau, Yarmouth; RoseMary (Gerry) White, Yarmouth. He was predeceased by brother-in-law Rick. There was no visitation by request of the famiy. Funeral services were held Friday January 11 at 2:00pm in Sweeny's Funeral Chapel, Yarmouth, Rev. A.D. Bill Newell officiated. Gladys Violet Veinott – 85, of Wolfville Ridge, passed away Monday, January 7, 2008 in Grand View Manor, Berwick, Born in Mort Lake, England, she was a daughter of the late William and Louise (Piper) White. She was an employee of the former Eastern Kings Memorial Hospital, Wolfville, where she worked as a cook until her retirement. Gladys enjoyed going for long car rides with her good friend, Margaret Eye. She was a member of the Wolfville Baptist Church. Gladys was also proud to be a war bride. She is survived by two sons, Malcolm, Toronto; Norman, Maryland, USA; a step-son, Gerry (Phyllis) Veinott, New Minas; four daughters, Joan, Wolfville; Barbara (Brian) Reid, Wolfville Ridge; Jacqueline (Dwayne), Fredericton; Angela (Gary), Vernon, British Columbia; a step-daughter, Joyce (John), Ontario; a daughter-in-law, Debbie Best, West Brooklyn; a brother, Jack, England; several grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her first husband, Norman Best and her second husband, Ralph Veinott; two sons, William and Leslie; an infant daughter; four brothers, Albin, William, Peter and Bob; two sisters, Doris and Stella; two grandchildren, Frank and Candina Reid; two great grandchildren, Madison and Emma Gates. Visitation was held from 3:30–5 and 7-9 p.m. Thursday, January 10, 2008 in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville, where the funeral service, followed by a reception, was held at 10:00 a.m. Friday, January 11, 2008, Reverend Doctor Barry Morrison officiated. DAWSON, Rev. Ulric Gathorne “Rick” – 74, Kentville passed away peacefully on January 7, 2008 in the in the VG Site, QEII Hospital. Born in Central Bedeque, P.E.I. on July 1, 1933 to the late Col. Ulric Gathorne and Adella Pearl (Francis) Dawson. Rick was educated in Charlottetown, Hebron, Yarmouth and Central Bedeque; graduated from Yarmouth County Consolidated Memorial High School. Attended Acadia University, Dalhousie University and University of New Brunswick; received Bachelor of Theology from Acadia University in 1966. In his early years he was employed at Yarmouth Royal Store, Simpson Sears, E.S Stephenson & Sons and Federal Department of Fisheries, Inspection Division. Rick Owned and operated Ann Vall Frozen Foods Ltd., U.G. Dawson Customs Brokers Ltd., and Kentville Truck Sufferance Warehouse for a number of Years at New Minas, NS. Called to Christian Ministry and ordained in 1966 at Billtown United Baptist Church. Pastored at Arlington/Scotts Bay Road/Scotts Bay churches, NS, Billtown/Lakeville/Woodville United Baptist churches, NS, Skyline Acres United Baptist Church, NB, Regal Road United Baptist Church, Dartmouth-Cole Harbour,NS, South Ohio United Baptist Church, South Ohio, NS and Cedar Lake United Baptist Church, Cedar Lake, NS. The church in Skyline Acres was founded under Rick’s leadership and the Regal Road United Baptist Church was built under his leadership. Rick worked with the Faith at Work Program and the Christian Ashram for many years. Building new churches and leading people to the Lord was very tiring but a fulfilling challenge which he loved. Rick was a Wolf Cub and Boy Scout and later a Wolf Cub leader and Boy Scout leader and received the Boy Scout leader’s “Wood Badge” and after ordination was also a Boy Scout Chaplain. He also served as Chairman of the Kingswood Camp Board, Kings County; member of the Trustees, Camp Peniel, Yarmouth County; Clerk and Treasurer Yarmouth County United Baptist Association; Moderator of Halifax County United Baptist Association; member of the Board of the Baptist Federation of Canada and member of the Co-labour Committee of the Billy Graham 1979 Crusade in Halifax. In later years Rick enjoyed many hobbies and interests such as genealogy; woodworking, stained glass, gardening and camping. Rick was a member of the Y’s Mens Club in Frederiction and charter secretary of the New Minas & District Lions Club. Served on the board of the Yarmouth County Community Heath Board, Committee of the Tri County VON to establish Volunteer Co-ordinator program. Rick was much loved and will be sadly missed by all that knew him and is survived by his wife of (54) years, Betty Lou (Allen), daughter, Deborah Legere, Moncton, sons: Steven (Lisa), Winnipeg, Manitoba, Paul (Dena), Kentville, Jeffrey (Karen), Red Deer, Alberta, daughters-in law: Joyce (Venebles) Dawson, Dawn (Owen) Dawson, Saint John, NB; Sisters: Phyllis McAnally, Edmonton, Alberta, Irma Long, Fredericton, New Brunswick, Margaret Ledbetter, Kemptville, Ontario, Alice (Willard), Goodwin Kentville, Nova Scotia; grandchildren, Misty, Mary Jane, Chantal, Amy, Stephanie, Nicholas, Desiree, Dominique and Danielle and 11 great grandchildren. Besides his parents, Rick was predeceased by, sons: Thomas, Michael, and David, son-in-law: Laurent Legere, sisters: Eileen (Hansen) Rupert, Dorothy Lord, Betty Shaw, brothers-in law: Frank Hansen, Ralph Rupert, Burton Lord, Pat McAnally, Douglas Long, Joseph Ledbetter Cremation has taken place. There was no visitation by request. A funeral service was held Thursday, January 10, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. in the New Minas Baptist Church, Rev. Robert Knowles and Rev. John Beers officiated. DIXON, William “Keith”, 82, Lr. Woods Harbour, Shelburne County, passed away Monday, January 7, 2008 in Yarmouth Regional Hospital. Born in Woods Harbour, he was a son of the late Osmond and Ella (Forbes) Dixon. He was a member of the IOOF Lodge, Woods Harbour, and a founding member of the Woods Harbour Volunteer Fire Department. He is survived by his wife, the former Leta Garron; sons, Langille (Nancy), Forbes Point, Carl (Ben), Toronto, Gary (Pamela), Canaan; daughter, Rhonda, Welshtown; sister, Jeanette (Earl) Prosser, Truro; grandchildren, Darren (Sonya), Timmy (JoEllen), Janine (Joel), Devin (Suzanne), Sherisse, Shonda, Shaula, Jeremy; great grandchildren, Chloee, Ethan, Kylie, Nicholas, Noah, Maitlynn, Kaidyn.
