Hants Learning Network to sponsor Family Literacy programs

Parents and caregivers are invited to participate in Family Literacy Projects taking place in four schools in Hants West as well as in two community sites: Hantsport, Newport Station, Three Mile Plains and Windsor Forks Schools, as well as the Adult Learning Centre in Windsor and the Hants Shore Clinic in Summerville.

The school programs, for parents of P-6 students, gives tips on how to help your child with reading and writing and gives quality children’s books for your at-home library. Studies have shown that in families who spend time on literary activities, children are more likely to be successful at school, have increased confidence and problem-solving skills. Your child doesn’t need to be attending the school to participate.

The community programs are called Talk! Sing! Read! Similar to the popular preschool program at Windsor Library, this weekday program offers parents of children aged 0-6 the opportunity to come together and explore quality children’s literature and ways to involve children in reading activities. Parents will also have the opportunity to discuss their own learning plans with the facilitator.

Although some schools have started their programs, others are poised to begin during Family Literacy Week, Jan.21-27. A celebration event will be held on Family Literacy Day Jan. 27 at the Windsor Library, where everyone is invited to come to read and explore books together.

Funded by the Skills and Learning Branch of the Department of Education, this program aims to increase literacy awareness, skills and participation by parents/caregivers’ through engagement in literacy activities at home and at school.

Following two successful pilot programs at four schools, the goal is to expand to other sites and increase parents’ exposure to quality children’s literature. Developing a life-long love of learning among participants is an added benefit for all.
