The executive director of the Nova Scotia Fish Packers Association says he has been asked by port reps in Lobster Fishing Area 34 in southwestern Nova Scotia to convene a meeting with some buyers and exporters in late January to talk about pricing and marketing in the lobster industry.
“I think from the buyer standpoint, the last few years anyway, most of the guys seem to think the status quo is not working in the best interest of them or the fishermen,” says Denny Morrow.
And fishermen have said again and again that they would like to see more stability and transparency in the industry.
“I’ve been giving some thought as to what kind of alternatives, to the present pricing system that we have on the wharf, that we might consider,” says Morrow. “It’s not easy to come up with something new but I think we’ll have a couple of proposals that we can maybe put forward to the fishermen at the end of January and maybe they’ll have something as well.”
