A recent call from a concerned motorist reporting a possible structure fire in an old chicken barn on Hillaton Branch Road turned out to be a light left on.

Canning Fire Department spokesman Scott Cruickshank said a passing motorist, having seen what appeared to be flames through a window, called in a possible structure fire at the old chicken barn Dec. 19. It turned out to be a false alarm. Someone had left a light on upstairs in the building.

Canning firefighters responded to a call for medical assistance on Pleasant Street Dec. 16.

Canning responded to a fire alarm sounding on J. Jordan Road Dec. 18.

Canning firefighters responded to a call for medical assistance on J. Jordan Road Dec. 21.

Canning responded to a two-vehicle collision on Black Hole Road in Glenmont Dec. 22. There were no injuries reported.

Canning responded to a call for medical assistance on Highway 221 in Canning early Dec. 23.

Canning firefighters responded to the scene of a fatal collision involving a car and pedestrian on the Pereau Road in Blomidon Christmas Eve.

Greenwich Fire Chief Randy Schofield said his department responded to a call about a collision between a car and tractor-trailer on the Ridge Road overpass Dec. 15 at 3 a.m. Schofield said it’s miraculous the driver of the car, who walked away with only a cut on his forehead, wasn’t more seriously injured.

Kentville firefighters responded to a chimney fire on King Street Dec. 18. Chief Shawn Ripley said it wasn’t very serious.

Kentville firefighters were called to check a house on Prince Street for carbon monoxide later that week, but Ripley said they didn’t find anything.

Kentville responded to a dryer fire at T.J.’s Convenience in Aldershot just before 4 a.m. Dec. 23.

Kentville responded to a snowmobile crash in the Fox Hill subdivision later that week. The machine apparently rolled over on top of the operator. Ripley said firefighters assisted paramedics at the scene.

Kentville firefighters investigated a complaint of a chimney fire on Church Avenue at around 9 p.m. on Christmas Eve. Ripley said it turned out to be a non-event.

New Minas firefighters responded to a three-vehicle collision on Commercial Street Dec. 21 and to a two-vehicle collision on Commercial Street Dec. 23. Chief James Redmond said no one had to be transported to hospital in either incident.

New Minas responded to three vehicle fires around Christmas, including a car fire on Milne Avenue Dec. 21 and two on Christmas Eve, a car fire on Highway 101 near Exit 12 and a van fire on Crescent Avenue. Redmond said the van probably could be repaired, but he doubts if either car could be salvaged.
