“It’s December in Our Town” was the title of the multicultural celebration of the season held at PWES Dec. 13. It was performed in the afternoon and in the evening to standing-room-only crowds.

The story revolved around a group of students collecting items for the food bank. In the course of their travels they meet people who celebrate the variety of traditions and holidays in their town. They start by singing “December in Our Town”.

Gr. 4/5 Rhodenizer celebrated Hanukkah with their song “Hanukkah” while the three P/1 classes of Monk, Baird and Bowlby told the Christmas story. The first song was the active “Here We Go Up to Bethlehem”.

“Innkeeper” had the children imploring in words and gestures for the innkeeper to find room for Mary and Joseph. Children with tinsel halos and different coloured shimmering tops sang “Band of Angels”, each one raising their hands as they were counted.

Gr. 3 Mackenzie’s Kwanzaa song had a lively beat. Gr. 2 Long’s Divali performance featured beautiful costumes and a two-stick rhythm.

There were a stageful of cool Santas with hats and shades during “Rockin’ Old St. Nick” performed by Gr. 2/3 Serieys.

Elements of First Nations culture were shared during “Spirit of the Sun” by Gr. 4/5 Spicer. An energetic performance of “La Fiesta” by Gr. 4/5 Muttart featured Latin American Christmas traditions.

A procession of students from Gr. 4/5 Harnum bearing candles walked through the gym and onto the stage, where they sang “Seasons of Hope.”

The concert concluded with all of the students returning to the front for a reprise of “December in Our Town”. Music teacher and director Mrs. Frampton, the staff, parent volunteers and students are to be commended for an excellent concert.
