On Sat., Dec. 8, local volunteers joined the Canning Volunteer Fire Department for its third annual food drive in support of the local food bank. Roadside canvassers combed the neighborhood to bring in truckloads of non-perishable food items and monetary donations.
Kings North MLA Mark Parent, Kings County Councillor Jim Taylor and members of Emergency Health Services stationed outside of Valu-Foods also joined in the efforts.
Chairperson Terry Porter would like to thank everyone, on behalf of the Canning and Area Volunteer Fire Department for your assistance and generous donations. The food drive would not have been successful without all of your help.

Holiday Family Arts Sunday was held at Ross Creek Centre for the Arts Sun., Dec. 9. Approximately 75-100 guests enjoyed an annual Artisan Sale and festive afternoon of Christmas carols, cookies and cider, and a host of handmade holiday craft projects for all ages. Entrance was by donation, plus a non-perishable food item for the Glooscap Elementary School’s Breakfast Club.

“Ross Creek Secret” continues at the Centre and online until Fri., Dec. 21. Originating in Halifax, you can purchase original Canadian artwork for only $50. Proceeds support the youth Art Academy programs. Gallery hours: Tues. to Fri., 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Weekends by appointment or chance.
Canning Lions Hall Flea Market is open year-round from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tables are $5 each with free tea and coffee to sellers. There is a $1 entrance with canteen facilities available.
On Sun., Dec. 9, the room was festively decorated, filled with sellers and buyers. And contributing to the festive atmosphere, acoustic guitar players Tammy Johnstone, who also sold her beaded jewelry, and Ernie Doiron, from Busy Bee Ceramics, provided musical entertainment.
Starting with 12 tables, it has grown to approximately 65 and is building each week. With all proceeds to the Lions, “every little bit helps,” says Don Margeson. Contact Don at 678-5525 for details.
Also on Sun., Dec. 9, at 5:30 p.m., residents and visitors braved cold temperatures and gathered at Bruce Spicer Park for an evening of festive entertainment. All enjoyed soup, cider and sweets, a tree-lighting ceremony and musical entertainment, and horse and wagon rides around the village. A visit from Santa at the bandstand was also a favourite treat for the youngsters.
Northeast Kings Education Centre (NKEC): The Advanced Placement Biology class will wrap gifts at the County Fair Mall every Thurs., Fri., Sat., and Sunday between now until Christmas. Freewill offering. Proceeds to a Costa Rica trip in March.
Student Services Angel Tree donations will be collected until Wed., Dec. 19 when they will be given to Family and Children’s Services for distribution in our area.
Glooscap Elementary School: Christmas Shopping Party will be held in the school’s multipurpose room Tues., Dec. 18 and Wed., Dec. 19. Cost is only 50 cents per gift with proceeds for the purchase of a special piece of equipment for a special needs student. Gift-wrapping available. Contact the school at 582-2010 for details.
A skating party will be held Thurs., Dec. 20 with each class receiving 30 minutes of skate time and finishing off with hot chocolate. Classes will leave 15 minutes prior to ice time. All children must wear a helmet; some are available from the school if needed and adults are encouraged to wear one. A number of skates are also available.
Donations are gratefully accepted. Parents are welcome to join them at the rink for skate-tying and gliding on the ice.
The “Adopt-A-Library” program continues with a goal of 10,000 books before June 1. Record the number of books a child reads at home in December and just prior to the holiday break, then send the total to child’s teacher. School total will be tallied and posted on the RCMP’s “fighting crime” website.

Two Planks and a Passion Theatre: Double Plays advance 2008 season tickets are available just in time for Christmas gift giving. The 17th season presents two large-scale outdoor productions “Off the Grid” on the grounds of the Ross Creek Centre for the Arts featuring Thornton Wilder’s classic Our Town from July 1-27 as well as the World Premiere of Jerome: The Historical Spectacle by Ami McKay, bestselling author of The Birth House. It previews Aug. 1, running until the 17th.
