December 2, 2007 to December 8, 2007 continued Anton Albert Schellink (Doc) (Lt. Cmdr, retired) – died on Tuesday, December 4th, 2007 in Fort Erie, Ontario, after a brief illness. Born in 1925 in Kindersley, Saskatchewan, he was a son of the late Henri and Lucy (Vandermoor) Schellinck. Doc was an extraordinary pilot. He managed to enlist in the RCAF and graduate as a pilot officer by age 17. He then served in the Royal Navy Fleet Air Arm in England. He then continued his career in the RCN. As an exchange pilot in the USN, he flew in elite squadrons, piloting the most advanced jet aircraft in the world at that time. He served aboard all three Canadian aircraft carriers: the Warrior, the Magnificent and the Bonaventure. A navy pilot to the end, he flew the last plane off the Magnificent. As one of the original pilots in the young Canadian naval air arm, he was frequently put in the role of test pilot. He piloted 27 types of aircraft including Seafires, Cougars, Seafuries, Vampires, Hellcats, Fireflies, the Bell 47G and the Consolidated PBY 5A converted for water bombing. He launched the first Banshee initial deck trials on the Bonaventure and was the first pilot to survive a carrier overshoot and ditching of a Seafury. He was squadron leader of the first Trackers to fly across the Atlantic. In, 1963-1965, he was the commanding officer of VU33 in Pat Bay, Vancouver Island. Following his retirement from the Canadian Armed Forces in 1972, he served as Director of Economics for the Nova Scotia Medical Society from 1973- 1989 and Executive Director from 1989-1990. Doc was predeceased by his first wife, Genevieve (McDonnell) in 1976, a brother, Edward and a sister, Henriette in infancy. He is survived by his wife Lorraine (Pickrem), two sons: Tony (Heather MacIntosh), Halifax; David (Janice Walton), Vancouver; a daughter, Karen (David Hills), Bermuda; two stepsons, Rick Parker (Darlene), Toronto; Frank Parker, (Deb) Bedford, Nova Scotia; three grandchildren, Jennifer Schellinck, Ottawa, Trevor Schellinck, Halifax, and Rebecca Kilcup, Halifax; three sisters, Elodie Robinson, Victoria; Yvonne Baker, Regina; Mary Moreau, Victoria; a brother, Henry, Courtney, British Columbia. A man who made friends easily, he will be remembered by many from all facets of his life across Canada and the United States. December 2, 2007 to December 8, 2007 continued DAVIS, William “ROY” 88, Roseway Manor, formerly of Jordan Ferry, passed away Tuesday, December 4, 2007 in Roseway Manor, Sandy Point, Shelburne Co. Born in Jordan Ferry, he was a son of the late William and Winnie (Firth) Davis. Roy was a fisherman and a maintenance worker during his working years. Roy was a veteran of the Second World War. He is survived by son, Roderick, Jordan Bay; daughter, Margo Swim, Brass Hill; sister, Ida MacAdams, Port Joli; foster brother, Arnold Dedrick; foster sister, Margaret Demings; grandchildren, Tanya, Michael, Lorraine and Stephanie, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife, the former Doris MacDonald; son, Alan; sisters, Mabel Thorburne and Ada Harris; brother, Lyle; foster brother, Donald Pierce. Funeral service was held on Sunday, December 9 in Trinity United Church, Shelburne with Rev. Joanne McFadden officiating. Interment in Jordan Ferry Union Cemetery. December 2, 2007 to December 8, 2007 continued KENNEDY, William Forbes York - 77, Liverpool, Queens County, passed away suddenly December 4th, 2007 at home. Born in Halifax, he was a son of the late William Forbes York and Ramona Yvonne Strathmore (Newnham) Kennedy. Forbes was a sales representative for filtration products and was owner and operator of Kennedy Filtration Supplies. In his early years he was a King Scout while in High School. He attended Acadia University. Forbes was a former Co-op member in Brooklyn and served on various boards such as the South Shore Health Board and Queens Manor Board. He was a friend of Bill W. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Betty (Williams); daughters: Karen (Charles) McGee of Yellowknife; Kathy Marrs of St. Catharine’s ON; Carol (Fred) Beattie of Eastern Passage; Heather (Dean) Clarke of Vernon, BC; Bill (Linda) of Edmonton; Steve of Nelson, BC. Eight grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. Sister Cecily Courtney of Fort Myers, Florida and sister-in-law Barbara (Phil) Porter of Sarnia, ON. He was predeceased by: grandsons Adam Murphy and Joshua Kennedy. Brother Peter. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Chandlers’ Funeral Home, Liverpool. Funeral service was held Monday, December 10th, 2007. Rev. Greg Denton officiated. Burial took place in Liverpool United Baptist Cemetery. December 2, 2007 to December 8, 2007 continued Croft, Vivian Irene - 85, Brooklyn, Queens County, passed away Wednesday, December 5th, 2007, in the Queens Manor, Liverpool. Born in Sandy Cove, Queens County, she was a daughter of the late Max and Eliza (Gates) Rhyno. Vivian was a past president of St. Andrews Anglican Church Ladies Guild, and a member of the Native Council of Nova Scotia. She was a former employee for Jagmen’s, where she designed sweaters for many years. She is survived by sons Richard (Joanne), of Brooklyn, Donald (Marlene), of New Germany, and brother Harley (Joan), of Brooklyn. She was predeceased by husband Percey, and brothers Randolph “Bill”, and Irwin. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Chandlers’ Funeral Home, Liverpool. December 2, 2007 to December 8, 2007 continued Joyce Kathleen “Kay” Killam – It is with great sadness that the family of Joyce Kathleen “Kay” Killam announces her passing on Friday, December 7, 2007 at the age of 88. Kay has resided for many years at Tideways in Wolfville. Born in Kingsport in 1919, she was the daughter of the late Roy and Esther (Ells) Loomer. Kay grew up in Kingsport and traveled by the “Blueberry Express” every day to finish her high school education in Kentville. Following Grade 12, Kay attended Mack Business College. She worked at the Royal Bank for five years before becoming the first secretary at the Central Kings High School in 1951. She worked there for 17 years and had such fond memories of the students and teachers! Following this, Kay worked at the Kings Regional Vocational School for 10 years. She was also employed with Apex Plumbing and Heating in Woodville. She later retired from Kings Mutual Insurance, Berwick. Kay married Laurie Killam in 1944 and raised their children in the Woodville family home for more than 30 years. She attended the Wesley Knox United Church in Woodville and was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star. She was an avid bridge player and was a member of the Kentville New Horizons Club. She enjoyed traveling extensively with her family and friends, loved to play bingo and most often would be busy working on one of her favorite pastimes, quilting. Kay’s special spirit and joy for life will be missed by all who knew her. Kay is survived by her daughters, Lynn (Brian) Pulsifer, Kentville; Kim (Daryl) Keddy, Billtown; her son, Dick (Madonna) Killam, Halls Harbour; her brother, Roy (Helen) Loomer, Halifax; her brother-in-law, Don (Jean) Killam, Woodville; her beloved grandchildren, Leslie, Greg, Janet, Brad, Heather, Pam, Adam and Justin; her step-grandchildren, Deborah and Peter; great grandchildren and “The Apples of Her Eye”, Benjamin, Jack, William, Camden, Hilary, Quinton, and Madison; step-great grandchildren, Brenton and Ellen. She was predeceased by her husband, Laurie in 1976 and by her second husband W. L. “Red” Chisholm; her sisters, Elizabeth Kinsman and Josephine Ward; her brother, John; her great granddaughter, Hannah. Karen, Falmouth - It was with great sadness that the family of Elizabeth Karen Woodman, age 65, of Falmouth, Hants County, announced her passing on Thursday, December 6, 2007. Karen had fought her battle at the Palliative Care Unit, V.G. Site, Q.E. II, Halifax, and was surrounded by her devoted family. Born on November 24, 1942, in Five Mile River, Hants County, she was a daughter of the late Howard and Irene (MacDonald) Dickson. Karen devoted her life to raising her children and grandchildren. She loved being surrounded by children and was a tremendous caregiver to all those entrusted in her care. Her door was always open for all families to laugh, love and have a cookie or two from the cookie jar. Karen is survived by her husband of 42 years, Frank; her children, Darren Woodman, Falmouth and Denise Marshall, Surrey, BC; grandchildren, Jessica Woodman; Alex and Mikayla Marshall; Karen’s siblings, Phyllis Savoy, Five Mile River; Victor (Betty) Dickson, Ontario; Mary (Gary) Vanstone, Sydney River; Gloria (Gerald) Miller, Noel Road; Sheila (Danny) Lahey, Sydney River; Nelson (Donna) Dickson, Maitland; Valerie MacPhee, Sydney River; Hattie (Clarence) Spencer, Noel Road; Brenda Harvey, Maitland; Sandra (Harlen) MacPhee, Shubenacadie; Myles (Bev) Dickson, Joggins; numerous nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by a brother, Tony Dickson; and a sister, Marilyn Dickson in infancy. Cremation has taken place. Funeral service was 2:30 p.m. Sunday, December 9, 2007, in Lindsay’s Windsor Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Glennis Smith officiated. Interment was in the Centre Falmouth Cemetery, Town Road, Falmouth, followed by a reception at the Lindsay Family Reception Centre, 184 King Street. December 2, 2007 to December 8, 2007 continued Harris, George De Lancey, of New York, NY, and Port Royal, Nova Scotia, died in New York at age 83 on December 7, 2007. He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Joanna Cochrane Harris, their son, James Harris, and his brother, Thomas L. Harris. Del (as he was widely known) Harris was born in New York City and grew up in Scarsdale and Nova Scotia. He and Mrs. Harris lived in Port Royal, Nova Scotia, five months of the year in a home he decorated and cherished. A veteran of WWII, Del, with his brother Thomas, owned D. P. Harris Hardware and Manufacturing Company. The company, founded by his grandfather, produced Rollfast bicycles. He traveled internationally for many years representing his company. Del, much loved by everyone who knew him, possessed a generous and loving spirit. Predeceased by his daughter, Charlotte, he will be interred, like her, in the Harris family plot in the Annapolis Royal Cemetery, Nova Scotia. A memorial gathering was held on December 16th.
December 2, 2007 to December 8, 2007 continued Ronald LaVerne Durling - 71, of Prospect, Kings County passed away Friday, December 7, 2007 in the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville. Born in Prospect he was a son of the late Layton and Ivy Luella ( Nowlan) Durling. Ronald was a laborer working with various companies throughout his lifetime. He is survived by brothers: Alden (Eva) Durling, North Alton; Dwight (Margaret) Durling, Prospect; sisters: Helen Griffin, Coquitlam, B.C.; Jean Griffin, Port Williams; many nieces and nephews. Ronald was predeceased by a son, Edwin in infancy; a sister, Elsie (Mrs. Clyde Cotter), brothers Maxwell, Harmon and Richard. Cremation has taken place under the direction of the Annapolis Valley Funeral Home, 34 Coldbrook Village Park Drive, Coldbrook. No visitation by request. Born in Upper Burlington, Hants Co, he was a son of the late Lewis and Heloise “Orrie” (Smith) Reynolds. Surviving is his devoted partner of over 20 years, Louise McInnis; his daughters, Tanya (Wayne) Dort, Burlington, Ont.; Beth (Jamie) Hutt-Semple, Truro; son, Bruce, Westville; sister, Fay, Falmouth; brothers, Ron (Joyce), Falmouth; Danny (Marilyn), New Minas; as well as granddaughters, Chelsea Reynolds, Sarah and Jessica Dort and Julia Hutt-Semple, and grandsons, Dalton Dort and Brett Hutt-Semple; stepchildren, Christine (Harold) Withrow, Kathleen (Gary) Munroe, Donna (Perry) Brown, Teresa (Dwight) Skipper and Tony Patterson and their families as well as several nieces and nephews. He was a loving father and grandfather and loved his children, grandchildren and stepchildren and step grandchildren very much. He will also be missed by his pal, Mariah. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his brother, Fred Reynolds (2006) (New Minas). Clarey operated a siding business under C.W. Reynolds for many years. He was a talented carpenter and a real homebody who took great pride working with Louise in their vegetable and flower gardens. He enjoyed trying to find and look at antiques. Cremation has taken place and no visitation by request. The Funeral Service will be held in the Windsor Royal Canadian Legion on Wednesday, December 12, at 1 p.m. followed by a reception.
