December 2, 2007 to December 8, 2007 Patricia Vera Acton (nee Ward) – Born in Wolfville, Nova Scotia, passed away peacefully Sunday, December 2, 2007 in Penticton, British Columbia with all her children by her side. Her journey ended far too soon. She will be lovingly remembered by her four children, her 5 grandchildren and all who knew her. A Memorial Service was held Friday, December 7, 2007, 1:00PM at First Baptist Church, Penticton, BC. In lieu of flowers, memorial tributes may be directed to Moog and Friends Hospice House (1701 Government St., Penticton V2A 8J7) or to the First Baptist Church Benevolent Fund. December 2, 2007 to December 8, 2007 HEMEON, Edward Day, 85, of Pleasant Point, Lockeport, passed away in Roseway Hospital on Sunday, December 2, 2007 with his loving family by his side. Born in West Head, he was a son of the late Albert and Pearl (Mulloch) Hemeon. He was a veteran of the Second World War, serving overseas for two years in the Royal Canadian Navy. He was a fisherman all his working life. He fished for six years on the West Coast and always loved to talk to people and tell them stories. He is survived by his wife of fifty years, the former Nora Thompson; son, Edward (Karis Brown) East Green Harbour; daughters, Deborah (Rodney Nickerson), East Jordan; Vonda (Gary) Thompson, Sable River; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren as well as three nieces. He was predeceased by brothers, Earl, Gordon, Floyd, Keith and Norman; sister, Lillian. Cremation has taken place under the direction of H.M. Huskilson’s Funeral Home, Lockeport. A graveside service was held on Wednesday, December 5, 2007 in Woodlawn Cemetery, Little Harbour with Rev. Dr. John Hammond officiating. Memorial donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society. December 2, 2007 to December 8, 2007 Hazel Jean Mahar – 88, of Kentville, passed away Sunday, December 2, 2007 in the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville. Born in Waterville, Kings County, she was a daughter of the late Allan and Nellie (Arenburg) Mahar. She had been employed throughout the area providing domestic work and would often work alongside her sister, Marguerite. She was a member of and had been active with the Salvation Army, Kentville Citadel and volunteered wherever there was a church or community need. She was a member of the Kentville Seniors and enjoyed singing. She is survived by her daughter, Chloris (Jeremiah) Morine, Starr’s Point; two grandchildren, Khristopher (Lisa) Morine and Tanya (Wayne) Moore; two great grandchildren, Catherine and Teagan; a sister, Frances Cook, Cambridge; a brother, Leslie (Helen) Mahar, Kentville; nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by Chloris’ father, who was killed during the Second World War; her step mother, the former Grace (Porter) (Lightfoot) (Gould) Mahar; three sisters, Kathleen Arenburg, Marguerite Messom and Doris Atkins; an infant brother; several stepbrothers and stepsisters. Visitation was held from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Wednesday, December 5, 2007 in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville. The funeral service, followed by a reception, was held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, December 6, 2007 in the Salvation Army, Kentville Citadel, Captain Bradley Reid officiated. Burial took place in the Cambridge Cemetery, Kings County. Family flowers only, by request. December 2, 2007 to December 8, 2007 Norman Reginald Van Tassel, 72, of Winnipeg, passed away suddenly but peacefully at the Health Sciences Center, Winnipeg, on Monday, Dec. 3, 2007. Norman was predeceased by his father Howard Burton and mother Robena Blanche Van Tassel (Rice); his brothers Howard Jr., Clyde and James; and sisters Florence and Joan of Digby. Norm is survived by his wife Lynne (Lena), son Stephen (Carol), British Columbia; his daughter, Lori Ann (Dugald) Carter; grandchildren, Amy, Andrew and Vance Carter; brothers, Wayne (Minnie), Ontario; Neil (Florence) British Columbia; sisters, Pauline and Sharon, both of Nova Scotia; Donna (Bob) Kranstz, Ontario; brother-in-law Bill (Hazel) Rudishyn, sister-in-law Anne (Marion) Tylipski; Edna (wife of Clyde), Manitoba; and Lucille (wife of James), British Columbia; and nephews, nieces, family, friends in Canada and the U.S.A. Born in Digby on Dec. 18, 1934, Norm attended Digby Rural High School. He may be remembered in Digby as a young man playing hockey with his cousins and the other Van Tassels out on the pond or in the Digby rink in the early 1950s. He moved to Toronto in 1952, joined the Canadian Army and served in the regular forces until 1962. He had overseas duty in Korea with the 2nd Queen’s Own Rifles of Canada and numerous postings in Canada as an instructor and later as clerk administrator. Upon his release from the Canadian Army, he was employed as a correctional officer at Headingly Correctional Institute and then as a fireman at the Atomic Energy of Canada in Pinawa, Man. Later he returned to Corrections Canada to work with juveniles at Vaughn St. Detention Home and Manitoba Youth Centre. In 1974, Norm founded and directed Winchester House (the first licensed group home for problem children in Manitoba) and Van Tassel Homes of Winnipeg, which included a wilderness camp at Wallace Lake. He then finished his working career as a real estate agent for NRS Block Bros. Many summers were spent at his cottage at Wallace Lake where he, his wife and family enjoyed time with their friends. Norm’s favorite pastime was fishing with his partner, Ginger. In 2002, he sold the cottage and purchased an RV with dreams of traveling. There was never a dull moment in Norm’s life. He was a past member of the board of directors for the Last Post Fund, a member of No. 283 ANAVETS Association for 25 years, and the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 4, for 21 years. He was past president of KVA Unit 17, a founding member and past president of the LGen RR Crabbe Chapter of the CAVUNP, founding member of the Sgt Tommy Prince MM Memorial Unit 76 of KVA and a member of the QOR Association of Canada. Norm took part in many fundraising activities and memorials and will be remembered by many for his volunteer work. Norm, with the never ending support from Lynne, his devoted wife of 42 years, was granted many certificates and awards for his work: the Minister of Veterans Affairs Commendation, Queens Golden Jubilee Medal, and service medals from Korea. Norm was the only Manitoban awarded with the Distinguished Silver Star for his work with the Korea Veterans of Canada. Norm will be fondly remembered by all his family and friends that supported him over the years. He will be especially missed by his three grandchildren and by Tara, his early morning walking partner. A memorial service was held Monday, Dec. 10, 2007, in Winnipeg. The family would like to thank Dr. Lipschitz and Dr. Atwal for all their care, compassion and support. December 2, 2007 to December 8, 2007 SURETTE, Marie Angele – 93, Nakile Home for Special Care, Argyle, and formerly of Yarmouth, passed away on Monday, December 3, 2007 in Yarmouth Regional Hospital. Born March 23, 1914, she was a daughter of the late Louis and Madeleine (Muise) Surette. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family, and is survived by many nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by brothers, Lindsay, Charlie, Edmund as well as a younger brothers; sisters, Helen Surette, Henrietta Surette. Visitation took place from 2-4 and 7-9 Wednesday, followed by the funeral at 2 PM, Thursday, December 6, both in H. M. Huskilson’s Memorial Chapel, 29 Albert Street, Yarmouth, Father John MacPherson officiated. Interment followed in Saint Joseph’s parish cemetery, Surette’s Island. December 2, 2007 to December 8, 2007 SCHNARE, Gertrude Ann - Gertrude was peacefully placed in our Lord’s arms on Monday, December 3, 2007. Born on Morris Island, Yarmouth Co. on June 6, 1919, she was one of eleven children born to Dennis and Delsie Moulaison. Besides her parents, Gertrude was predeceased by her husband Sterling; sisters Elizabeth “Betty” and Florence; brothers, Larry (Mully), Joseph, Albert and Lawrence (in infancy). She is survived by her sons, Wayne (Elizabeth), Eastern Passage and Scott (Michelle), Timberlea. She is also survived by sisters Antoinette and Helena, both of Yarmouth; Jeannette, Pleasant Valley, Yarmouth Co., and Bernice, East Boston. Also surviving are her grandchildren Kallie and Ryley of Timberlea and Geoffrey (Sandra) of Dartmouth; a great grandson Devin, also of Dartmouth. In addition, she is also survived by her extended family, step-grand children Amanda Jakeman (George Giusti) and Michael Jakeman (Catherine Stewart) and step-great grandchildren Colby and Rylan Giusti, all of Eastern Passage, as well as many nieces and nephews. At her request, Gertrude’s remains were cremated. Visitation took place from 7-9 Friday, followed by a funeral service on Saturday, December 8, 2007 at 2:00 PM, all in H. M. Huskilson’s Memorial Chapel, 29 Albert Street, Yarmouth, Father John MacPherson officiated. Interment followed in Our Lady of Calvary Cemetery, Yarmouth. Memorial donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or a charity of choice. December 2, 2007 to December 8, 2007 YOUNGSTROM, Dorothy - 80, of Wilmot, NS passed away Tuesday, December 4, 2007 in Soldiers Memorial Hospital, Middleton. Born in Saskatoon, she was the daughter of the late James and Ethel Etta (Clarke) Gillespie. She taught Grade 5 at Pleasant Hill School and Special Education at Princess Alexandra. After marrying and moving to Winnipeg, MB, she was on staff from 1952-1964. She especially enjoyed the teaching of a Visually Handicapped Class, as she herself was thus afflicted from birth and became completely blind in later years. Upon moving to Nova Scotia in 1964, she retired from teaching. She is survived by nieces, Marie, Red Deer; Chris, British Columbia; nephew, Stanley (Peggy) Gillespie, Red Deer, AB. She was predeceased by her husband, Bertil and brother, George Arthur. By request, there will be no funeral service. Interment will be held in Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens, Winnipeg, Manitoba. December 2, 2007 to December 8, 2007 SAWLER, Beverley Joanne “Bev” - 65, Windsor, Hants Co., passed away peacefully Tuesday, December 4, 2007, in Hants Community Hospital, Windsor. Born in Windsor, she was a daughter of the late James and Goldie (Leary) Forgeron. She will be sadly missed by her four legged baby, Bixby. She is survived by special friend, Dino Clark; sisters, Donna Scott and Deborah (Richard) Morden; stepchildren, Kenneth Sawler and Helen Asselstine; stepgrandchildren, Steven and Sarah Asselstine; nieces, Dawn and her children, Amber and Haley; Victoria and her children, Jeremy and Kennedy; nephews, James and Donald; several aunts, uncles and cousins in Cape Breton and the local area; sister and brother in-law, Sylvia and Ted Taylor and their family. Bev was predeceased by husband, James Sawler (1982); stepson, Steven Sawler; grandparents, Herbert Freeman (1964) and Millie Gertrude Leary (1972); uncle, Ronald Leary; in-laws, Howard (1982) and Winnifred Sawler (2001). The family would like to say a special thank you to the staff of the Dixon Centre in Halifax, Bev Lytle and the Palliative Care Team, Dr. W. Machel, Dr. Grimshaw and Dr. Enright for their loving care of Bev, as well as, cousin, Laura-Jane. December 2, 2007 to December 8, 2007 COLLIER, Neil McNutt - 85, Ardoise, Hants Co., passed away peacefully Tuesday, December 4, 2007 in Haliburton Place, Hants Community Hospital, Windsor. He was born on October 3, 1922, in Ardoise and was the only son of the late Samuel and Margaret (Brennan) Collier. Neil worked all his life on the family farm in Ardoise. He was a farmer, lumberman and wood dealer and worked hard at it, continuing right up until two years before his death. Neil was also a member of the Federation of Agriculture. He enjoyed the outdoor life, as well as a good game of cards and talking to his friends and neighbours. He is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, the former Norma McLearn; daughter, Phyllis Collier, West Gore; son, David (Pam) Collier, Ardoise; grandchildren, Shelley, Michelle, Evan, Heidi and Jackie; great-grandchildren, Arthur and Brooke. Neil was predeceased by an infant son, Richard Arthur and a sister Annie Alice “Allie” Dunbar. Arrangements for cremation have been entrusted to Lohnes Funeral Service, 419 Albert St., Windsor (902-798-8317), where the family will receive visitors 7-9 p.m. Thursday, December 13. Funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Friday, December 14, in the Lohnes Funeral Service Chapel, with Shelley Sponagle officiating. A reception will be held in the funeral home’s Elmcroft Reception Centre, immediately following the service, followed by a private family interment to be held in the South Rawdon Baptist Church Cemetery, South Rawdon.
