A 10-year old Clark’s Harbour boy showed both courage and heroism last week when he saved his mother’s life by calling 911.
“I was in my room when I heard a noise in the living room,” began Noah Malone, “I came out and my mom was shaking uncontrollably on the couch.”

Noah, scared approached his mother, Cathy Malone, and tugged on her arm telling her to stop joking, that this wasn’t funny.

When his mother did not respond Noah ran to the phone and dialed 911 and an ambulance was dispatched to their home.

They kept him on the phone for the 20 minutes it took for the ambulance to reach them but once the paramedics took over Noah continued thinking rationally under pressure and notified the rest of the family about what was happening.

“I remember none of it,” said Cathy, “I was sitting at the computer and the words started disappearing off of the screen and I knew something was wrong…I got up to go over to the couch and that was the last thing I remember.”

Earlier, Cathy, who has been an insulin dependent diabetic for just over a year had checked her blood sugar and found it to be 2.7, dangerously low.

She then took her glucose tablets and tested again and saw that it was slowly climbing up and felt it was safe to eat.

“But when your blood sugar gets low,” she explained, “you get confused and do not think straight so I grabbed potato chips.”

The carbohydrates in chips take too long to convert into the sugar she needed to boost up her blood level and soon her body succumbed to three successive seizures.

“If I didn’t come out when I did,” said Noah, “she could have died.”

When the ambulance arrived they needed to have all of Cathy’s medication and Noah quickly located her medication and told the paramedics what kind they were and how often she was to take them.

“I was so proud of him…I think I faired better having my son here when it happened than my husband,” Cathy laughs, “he would have never known about the medication.”

She said that she has found learning how to manage being on insulin has not been easy and had explained to her son what to do if there was ever an emergency.

“If mom ever passes out…I never dreamed of seizures I thought passing out would be the worst of it,” she explained, “just call 911 and they will tell you what to do.”

“I hope it doesn’t happen again,” said Noah. “After the seizure, my only worry is what if this happens while I’m at school and nobody else is at home.”

Cathy promised to be extra careful in managing her diabetes so that this does not happen again.

“It was the scariest day of my life,” said Noah, “but I didn’t cry.”

Great Job Noah!! You did good for your Mom. Hopefully you'll never have to go through something like that again.

To the Mom - Now that you know what can happen, hopefully you will become more aware of your own medical condition and the proper medications to deal with you health concerns. You might want to consider consulting with medical professionals such as your doctor more often, and the nurses at your health care facility as they may be able to help you with your medical issues.

Your little boy is adorable. I'll bet his grandparents are very proud of him. I hope they give him extra hugs for a job well done. And, of course, I hope they are proud of how well you are doing in raising that precious little son of yours.

All the Best!
