“A good woman passed - a kind soul freed”
Margaret Olivia Rockwell – passed away at Valley Regional Hospital in Kentville on the evening of November 6, 2007. It was Margaret’s wish to be cremated and have her ashes placed in the family plot in Upper Canard, without ceremony. When she was able – and long after most of us would ever be able - Margaret used to get her exercise and fuel her energy for life, as she rode her bicycle while visiting in Upper Dyke and Steam Mill. Margaret loved animals and loved people who loved animals. In fact, Margaret loved all living things and they responded in kind. While Margaret was never one to impose her presence, her absence will be noticed for a very long time to come. Her legacy is the love and admiration she has left in the hearts and minds of those who knew her and the unselfish helping hand she often anonymously extended to many. Margaret was a good friend, a wonderful conversationalist, a source of all local history and genealogy. Margaret was, above all else, kind. As a celebration of her life, there was a reception held, for friends and others whose lives Margaret touched, in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville on Wednesday, November 14th from 2:30 – 3:30. Donations in memory may be made to the Kings County S.P.C.A. or to a charity of your choice. On-line inquiries may be directed to www.whitefamilyfuneralhome.com. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville.
EYRE, Ralph Ellenwood - 90. Ralph died on November 8, 2007, at his home in Quispamsis, N.B., quietly in the company of his family. He was born in Red Deer, Alta., but was raised on a farm in Yarmouth. He joined the Canadian Army as a private soldier in the Royal Canadian Engineers in 1937. He retired from the army in 1964 as captain, commanding 3 Engineer Stores Depot in Petawawa, Ont. He served in Nova Scotia, Quebec, Ontario, Alberta and British Columbia. The highlight of his military career was the three years he spent in the Yukon managing engineering transportation on the Alaska Highway. In 1964, with his wife, Winnie, he returned to Central Chebogue and resumed the farm life until 2002 when they moved to New Brunswick to live with his daughter, Heather (d'Entremont). On the farm there were cows, steers, sheeps, pigs, hens, geese and thousands upon thousands of flowers on the driveways and around the five ponds he built over the years. He firmly re-established his rural Nova Scotian roots, at various times serving as municipal fence viewer, municipal sheep evaluator and the sheriff of Central Chebogue. He also served on the board of the t'YARC, the CNIB and the Western Nova Scotia Exhibition. He is perhaps best-known for his whimsical; and charming folk art - the hundreds of polished sculpted bird shapes mounted on natural driftwood bases that he and Winnie produced yearly and which he was making up to the time of his death. The "driftwood safaris" that he led into the backwoods of Nova Scotia were legendary. Dozens of neighbours and tourists had the opportunity over the years to see remote parts of Nova Scotia in the company of this kind and gentle man. Ralph was predeceased by Winnie in 2006 after 63 years of marriage. He is survived by his son, Ken (Carole Milligan), Annpolis Royal; his daughter Heather (Ray d'Entremont), Quispamsis; his grandchildren, Peter d'Entremont, Saint John, N.B., and Corinne d'Entremont, Austin, Tex.; and his brother, Charlie, Yarmouth. A memorial service was held in Sweeny's Funeral Home, Yarmouth, at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, November 14. Donations may be made to the Canadian National Institute for the Blind or the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia. There will be a private family interment at a later date.
