Spinney Brothers to headline Windsor Curling Club benefit
Fundraising efforts are continuing to rebuild the Windsor Curling Club building, which was destroyed by fire on Sept. 26. On the heels of a successful T-Shirt campaign and Halloween Dance, a benefit concert “Raising the House” is scheduled for Nov. 22 at 7:30 p.m. in the Mermaid Imperial Performing Arts Centre in Windsor.

Headlining the show are 16 time Eastern Canadian Bluegrass Award winners The Spinney Brothers. This traditional bluegrass group based in Gaspereau tours throughout North America in support of their five CD releases.

Soldier’s Creek is a group of talented musician who have been entertaining local audiences with a tight acoustic mix of favourites from country and classic rock.

Opening the show will be Sharon Ogilvie and Friends. Sharon has her own recording “Keep on Walkin” that features bluegrass, folk, gospel and country tunes.

Tickets for the show are $20 and are available at Moe’s Place Music Sales in Windsor.

Members of the Windsor Curling Club have been overwhelmed by the support in the community to date for this event.

All of the performing artists have donated their time and talents for the concert, and Mermaid has donated the use of the theatre. Several local businesses and individuals have also provided sponsorship including, Pothier Motors, Sepracorp Canada, Nu Air Ventilation, Lohnes Funeral Services, Pepsi (Allen Beverages), Chuck Porter MLA, Spitfire Arms and Tim Hortons.

Meanwhile, planning continues to determine the best means of replacing the curling facility. The Albert Street site has been cleaned up and volunteers have been traveling to visit newer curling facilities in the Maritimes for ideas and practical advice.

Curling has started for the season with Windsor members playing in their own leagues in Wolfville and at CFB Halifax. Other members have also temporarily joined existing leagues in Chester, Kentville and CFB Halifax.

A temporary office has also been set up across the street from the former club in the former Coastal Insurance offices.
