COLQUHOUN, Violet Marie - 86, Sand Beach, Yarmouth Co., died peacefully in Yarmouth Regional Hospital on October 31, 2007. She was the youngest of eight daughters born to the late Samuel and Emma Mossman of Rose Bay. After beginning her teaching career in Lunenburg County, she taught in Tiverton, Sand Beach, and finally Arcadia. She was a devoted and caring teacher who is loved and remembered by many students. For many years, she was a supportive advocate for the mentally challenged. Surviving are sons, Edward (Susan), Amherst; Wayne, Yarmouth; Philip, Red Deer, Alta.; Michael (Maria), Port Maitland; and Gary (Dawn), Arcadia; 15 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, Austin; sisters, Daisy Melanson, Amy Mosher, Marion Lohnes, Frances Conrad, Muriel Rippey, Rosa Kean, and Vivian Brand. Visitation was held Friday, November 2, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in Sweeny's Funeral Home. Funeral service took place Saturday, November 3, at 2 p.m. in Sweeny's Funeral Chapel, Rev. A.D. "Bill" Newell officiated. Burial took place in Chebogue Cemetery. LeBLANC, Joseph Richard – 79, Parade Street, Yarmouth, went home to be with his Lord and Savior, his wife Mildred, and his son, Lorne, whom he had never met, on Wednesday, October 31, 2007. Dad had a hard childhood, with many disadvantages, but he was no quitter. He was a hard worker who provided for the needs of his family. At the age of 14, he began work at Cosmos Imperial Mills, and later at Dominion Textiles, where he worked as a loom fixer until the mill closed down. During that time, he left to work in Labrador and Gander for a period of three years as a crusher operator and three months of scallop fishing. Dad liked hunting and loved fishing as well as working with wood. One of his greatest joys was camping and Sunday picnics with his family. He was a member of Temple Baptist Church, where he held the position of Trustee and usher. He is survived by daughters, Elaine “Toonkie” (Ed) Shaw, Moncton; Karen (Raymond) Doucette, Rocco Point; Brenda (Charles) Pothier, South Belleville; Theresa Melanson, Yarmouth; sons, Wayne (Vickie), Yarmouth; Fred (Sharon), Eastern Passage; Ken (Esther), Dayton; Derrick, Kamloops, BC; 20 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; a half-sister, Pauline, Little River Harbour. He was predeceased by his wife, Mildred; infant son, Lorne; a half-brother, Johnny; his parents, Eli and Margaret (Muise) LeBlanc. Dad’s wish was to have no visitation. A memorial service was held at Temple Baptist Church, 7 Bond Street, Yarmouth, at 1 PM, Monday, November 5, Rev. Ed Shaw officiated, assisted by Rev. Robert MacCormack. A private inurnment took place in Yarmouth Mountain Cemetery. It was requested that there be family flowers only. COLLIER, Florence - 84, Yarmouth, passed away October 31, 2007, at home. Born in Newfoundland on July 14, 1923, she was a daughter of the late James and Elizabeth Smith. Florence was a member of the ACW as well as a member of the Altar Guild at Holy Trinity Anglican Church. She is survived by daughter, Joann (Alan) Pothier, Yarmouth; sons, Peter (Angela) Collier, Sandford; Reg (Iris) Collier, Bedford; sister, Margaret Howe, Hamilton, Ont.; grandchildren, Michael and Danielle Pothier, Derek, Blair and Nicholas Collier, Brad and Megan Collier. She was predeceased by husband, Capt. Reginald Collier; brother, William; sisters, Catherine, Hilda, Johanna, and Meta. Visitation took place Saturday, November 3, from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. in Sweeny's Funeral Home. Donald Roderick Sawler– 79, of New Minas passed away Wednesday, October 31, 2007 in the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville. Born in Kentville, he was a son of the late George R. and Annie (Medicraft) Sawler. He formerly owned and operated Acadia Taxi, George R. Sawler Limited (Carpet Shop), and the Countryside Mobile Home Park, New Minas. He enjoyed working in his shop and building various items. He is survived by his wife, the former Linda Cotters; a daughter, Lisa (Jay) DeWolfe, Halifax; two sons, Scott and Jason, both of Alberta; two brothers, Beverley (Erna), Coldbrook and Lewis, North Alton; seven grandchildren, Shawna, Kaitlyn, Dylan, Makayla, Madison, Marin and Abigail; nieces and nephews. Cremation has taken place under the direction of the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville and there was no visitation by request. A graveside service was held at 3:30 p.m. Friday, November 2, 2007 in the Elm Grove Cemetery, Steam Mill, Kings County, Reverend Archdeacon Lynn Uzans officiated. Family flowers only, by request. SKIDMORE, Allan Eugene Jr. – 84, passed away peacefully at home in Wilmot, N.S., on Oct. 28, 2007. He was born in Springhill on May 8, 1925, to the late Allan Blair and Emma (Vieneau) Skidmore. Allan was a veteran of the Second World War, serving in England and Holland with the Canadian Army as a sergeant in the Signal Corps from 1942-1946. During his working years, Allan worked as a clerk at HMCS Cornwallis (1948-62), civilian personnel officer at CFB Greenwood (1962-71), at Maritime Command (1971-73) and again at CFB Greenwood (1973-81) before retiring. His interests were family, fishing, carpentry, woodworking, and gardening. He was a lifetime member and past master of Keith Lodge #16, Bear River, and past-president of the Greenwood Credit Union. He is survived by his beloved wife of 63 years Shelia (Davidson) Skidmore, formerly of Cramlington, England; daughters Angela (Ray) Soucie, Dartmouth, Janette (Bill) Boates-Hines, Nictaux West; son David Skidmore, Toronto; grandchildren Christine (Dale) Soucie Madill of Lewis Lake, Denise (Stephen) Simpson of Cochrane, Alberta, Tracey Boates, Savannah, Georgia, Darren (Lori) Boates, Middleton and Maxwell Skidmore, Toronto; great-grandchildren Matthew Madill, Alyssa and Natasha Simpson, Daniel and Bella Boates; sisters Evelyn Boss, Darlene Curry, and Audrey Ryan all of Springhill as well as many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by brothers Melvin and Douglas Skidmore and son-in-law Gerry Boates. Allan's family gives special thanks to Dr. McNally; the VON, especially Gwen Ellsworth, who made Allan's last days at home possible; Anna Goski, palliative care co-coordinator for Soldiers' Memorial Hospital in Middleton, and hospital volunteer Russell Delong. SCOBEY, Wm. “Dean”, 93, of Meadowbrook Manor, formally of Liverpool passed away peacefully October 31st, 2007, in Queens General Hospital, Liverpool. Born in Liverpool he was the son of the late William and Elizabeth (Wolfe) Scobey. Dean worked at Bowater Mersey Paper Company as a carpenter and was an avid craftsman. He was a member of Canadian Paper Workers Union Local 141. Dean is survived by nephew, Dr. Porter (Pat) Scobey of Halifax; niece, Queenie (Philip) Irwin of Brooklyn, niece, Nancy (Willard) Moulton, Liverpool; nephew, Joseph (Marilyn) Scobey of Mersey Point, nephew, Fred Scobey of Halifax, and nephew, Maurice Scobey Jr. of LaHave Manor, Bridgewater. He was predeceased by his companion, Thelma Leneten; brothers, George, Laurie, and Maurice; nieces, Marilyn Stafford and Maxine Buckle. Arrangements have been made under the direction of Chandlers’ Funeral Home, Liverpool. Funeral service was held Saturday, Nov. 3, 2007 from Trinity Anglican Church, Liverpool. Rev. GALLANT, Daniel Louis “Dan”- 22, of Kingston, NS, passed away due to a tragic car accident on Wednesday, October 31, 2007. He was the beloved son of Louis and Patricia “Trish” (Spencer) Gallant. Born in Middleton, NS on January 21, 1985, Dan attended school in the Greenwood area. He spent five years in Panama City, Florida where he graduated from Mosley High School in 2003. He was working at Convergys at the time of his death. Dan is survived by his devoted sister, Laura Gallant, Halifax; grandparents, Hubie and Greg Barr, Moncton, NB; Laura Spencer, Barrie, ON; great grandparents, Freda and Lawrence Croft, Gaspereau. He is also survived by numerous aunts, uncles and cousins who will all miss him dearly. He was predeceased by grandfathers, Frank Spencer and Arthur Gallant. Dan was a humorist and we request that you should wear red in his memory as that was his favorite color. Dan enjoyed reading his Manga magazines and playing video games with his many friends. SURETTE, James Joseph “Jim” - 86, Windsor, passed away peacefully Thursday, November 1, 2007, at home in Windsor. Born in Eel Brook, Yarmouth Co., he was a son of the late James and Ida (Saulnier) Surette. Jim was a very active member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Hants County Branch No. 009, Windsor, and the Lions Club. He enjoyed playing golf, curling, cards, crib and going hunting and fishing. He was an all around avid sports fan. Jim was well-known for his sense of humour, he always had a joke which may not have been suited for mixed company, but that didn’t stop him from telling it. He was proud to be a veteran of the Second World War, and was seen as a fixture in the annual Remembrance Day parade, as well as selling poppies prior to Remembrance Day. Jim was especially proud of all his sons and their accomplishments. Jim is survived by sons, Bernie (Debbie) LeBlanc, Yarmouth; Rick, Dartmouth; Roger (Mary), Dartmouth; Dennis (Kim), Bishopville; grandchildren, Chris, Kelly, David, Jillian; great-granddaughter, Hannah Mary; sisters, Claire, Dorothy (Keith) Bradshaw, Florida; Florence (Arnold) Kirk, Sault Ste Marie, Ont.; Emilda LeBlanc, Yarmouth; Ruth, Yarmouth County; Yvonne (Joe) LeBlanc, Sluice Point, Yarmouth Co.; and Agnes Clements, Ontario; brothers, Delbert (Carole), Ste Anne du Ruiisseau; Bernie (Marg), Oshawa, Ont.; several nieces and nephews. Jim was predeceased by his loving wife, the former Goldie J. Hines; sisters, Edna and Celeste. Arrangements have been entrusted to Lohnes Funeral Service, 419 Albert St., Windsor (902-798-8317), where the family received visitors 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Sunday, November 4, and also where the Royal Canadian Legion conducted a tribute service at 6:15 p.m. Cremation followed. Mass of Christian Burial was held 11 a.m. Monday, November 5, in St. John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church, 339 King Street, Windsor, with Rev. Father J.J. MacDonald officiating. FALSTREM, Vera (nee Ormiston), 1912-2007, passed away peacefully on November 1, 2007 in Kemptville, Ontario at the age of 95 years. She was predeceased by her husband Karl, sister Grace and brother Norris. She is survived by her daughter Jane Pattison and son Edwin (Jennifer) Falstrem. Granddaughters Karma (Alain) Beaudoin, Philippa (Erik) Skjaveland, Rebecca (Derrick) Dixon. Great-grandchildren Robert, Sarah and Jonathan Beaudoin, Elisabeth and Zachary Skjaveland, Emily and Colin Dixon. Siblings Marion (Howard) Barrett, Robert (Merle) Ormiston, Ruth Deeks, June (Calvin) Mclnnis, Gilbert (Doreen) Ormiston. As well as numerous nieces and nephews. She will be remembered by cherished friends and neighbours. We wish to recognize the care provided by the staff at Bayfield Manor and Dr. G. Leonard in Kemptville, Ontario. Cremation and a private family interment will take place in Parry Sound, Ontario.
