The Town of Wolfville and the Nova Scotia Community College (NSCC) system have signed a memorandum of agreement that will allow students to work on projects in the community.

Representatives penned the agreement Oct. 15

Mayor Bob Stead said he looks forward to horticulture students picking up a shovel and trowel at the town’s parks, but other educational exercises are also being planned.

NSCC president Joan McArthur-Blair said this is the first time a municipality and the college have forged such an agreement.

“Wolfville is known as a town of courage,” McArthur-Blair said. “This is another first. We anticipate this partnership will develop some greening projects.”

Principal Don Bureaux and Jamie Ellison from the Kingstec campus noted that there is already a rich history of cooperation. Now there is talk of an arboretum.

“I think it would look good on the town,” Ellison said. The horticulture instructor said he enjoys working with individuals like the mayor and lead hand David Slabotsky, who share a similar vision.

An arboretum, he suggested, has implications for youth studying the natural world, the creation of a specific collection of plants and tourism.
