Barrington RCMP received seven calls for assistance during Halloween night 2007 - a dramatic decrease from the 12 received during 2006 and a far cry from the 36 received just two years ago.
“They were mostly mischief events,” said Cpl. Doug Brannen.

“We spent all last night just being peacekeepers, watching things unfold and making observations and taking notes.”

A security guard for a school in Cape Sable Island called in an egg throwing, one person threatened to shoot another with a paint ball on Brass Hill, there were two complaints regarding a house party in Clam Point, and several calls about youths pulling branches into the middle of the road in Woods Harbour and setting them on fire, which police extinguished.

Cpl. Brannen said officers also witnessed several other incidents, which they are investigating.

“Charges are anticipated. We’re not going to go too far into what we think those charges might be or who our suspects are but we’re not done with Halloween yet,” he said.

Louise Halliday, warden for the municipality of Barrington was “very pleased” that it was a quieter Halloween.

“We’ve discussed this with the RCMP that it has been a problem in the past and hopefully by council being on board and saying something needs to be done and that there needs to be more people out there, it’s helped.”

Halliday also commended the RCMP on their creative approach to Halloween this year, posting bulletins requesting that the public contact them with any rumours weeks before the event.

“I think also that they have a better rapport with the students at the school. The students know that they can go to the RCMP if they have this information,” she said.

In Woods Harbour, the feeling of the crowd was immortalized by graffiti scrawled across the Samuel Woods Museum, which read: “Halloween 2007 sucked.”
